Hey guys,

I'm a student at UC Berkeley. I'm a 4.5 level player and I'm looking to find some hitting partners. I want to eventually make the club team here, and it's quite competitive with over a hundred guys competing for 12ish spots every year. I'll be playing against 5.0ish level players when I try out, so I could definitely use a lot of practice!

Anyone around the area wanna hit? Though I'd prefer to play around campus, I can also venture out to surrounding areas!

Helman has lots of good courts, but very few players looking for a game, as it's all scheduled practice.
The best courts for pickup 4.5 tennis is SanPabloPark up a block from SanPablo and N one block from Ashby.
Lots of 4.5 guys show to hit around 5 or so, some starting as early as 1PM, but those have prescheduled partners.
On weekend mornings, the 4.0 team from Davies and SanPablo play doubles there, below your level of course.
There are a row of maybe 8 courts S of campus, and someone said lots of UC player's play there.
RoseGarden on weekends has 4.0 doubles, in the mornings, with maybe ONE guy a 4.5 in doubles.

I'm down with that. Can come to Bancroft or those Elsworth courts though I can't reserve them, even though I can get in.

Though I can handle pace and the modern game I am probably closer to a 4.0 so if you need some confidence or to practice against some strong volleys I think I can help.

weekends and mornings are best if that works.

By mornings, Shroud means around 8AM.
He is a hard hitting elbow injured solid 4.0.

Well most days I need to go do some work, but I set my own schedule for the most part, and if I get enough warning I can be able to play most times. Though no one these days seems to be able to make plans more than 2 days away :)

I never was able to abide by the black book.
Mrs. Louie would tell her kids, "get someone else there in case"....
I've bailed on an Open tourney 3rd round, second day, because the surf was good, and the drive to Concord too far.
Heck, I"m documented for sitting on the seawall at VFW's watching the surfing action, when I had a practice session with GregShepard at 1 that day.
Anyways, rain coming almost every other day for a while.

Hope Tiki replies.
If he doesn't, come down to SanPabloPark.
Ming showed on Monday, I think he has M's' off work.
He was crushing the two little girls, hitting only weak second serves.

Hey Shroud!

Sorry for the late response. School's been a bit crazy lately. This holiday couldn't have come sooner. Check your inbox. I'll send you my contact info and whatnot. I'm definitely down to play!

Cool!
What holiday? I'm retired, out of the loop. If it's a government holiday, I"m out. Oh, just heard, President's day.
OH .... that's why the juniors are playing at Roseville this weekend!

No worries. Sent you an e-mail.

come on D. Some of us have to work, and know every holiday because they are few and far between....

Looks like Monday is a holiday. I'm on beck and call of g/f. Sorry.
At SanPablo, there is pickup 4.0 doubles, but I think you're looking for singles.
I'm not your level at singles, and certainly can't play singles in the mornings, since I usually wake up around 9AM.

Oh..
Papa, you should rotate right in for 4.0 doubles at SanPabloPark on Monday.
I talked to Ndeena and her husband, and they will be there IF they don't play both Sat and Sun. Sun is supposed to be wet courts.

Thanks Lee,
I will try and swing by Monday if I can. I can only skip out of work for an hour or two so trying to rotate into doubles at SP might not be the best use of time.
And I get lazy if I don't have something scheduled...

Hey Papa,

Already booked with Tiki. Maybe LeeD will oblige? He's the doubles king.

Thanks for the intro BTW.

No worries, He's a good captain asks for availability weeks in advance and sends the lineup by thursday if not earlier, so no surpises for you.
Hopefully this year I will be able to play a lot more USTA than I was able to last year.

Yeah, I hear ya....
Weekends, I get a 1.5 hour window to try to sneak some doubles in, sometimes skunk, mostly works for two quick sets. Some of them play best to 4 games, when people are waiting.
Got to play a couple sets of dubs with one of the girl's going up to Roseville for the state Junior's tourney, the No.1 seed in 12's. Good to know, variety works against ANYONE.

My friends have said good things about TAC(Tennis at Cal) in the past. You should check them out. Typically there are some TAC members that eventually make the club team so I figure they would be good practice for you.

Lets hope. That sounds like the kind of captain for me.

Any ideas how to drop 50lbs in 2 weeks?? :)

I think i recently saw a billboard for cool sculpting "Freeze the fat" or something.. so try sleeping in a ice bath..

Or you can just come out and hit with me every night...

Tiki,
Sorry to hijack your thread.
If you need another strong 4.0 hitting partner feel free to email me.
I usually like to hit to late on weeknights if that timing works for you.

Glad to know that there are lots of TW members around the area! No worries about hijacking lol. Happy to negotiate with terrorists if there's hitting involved! Maybe we can expand this and see about setting up some group TW practice sessions.

Papa Mango, feel free to message me anytime as well if you wanna hit! As I already told Shroud, I slightly overestimated myself as a 4.5 in the hopes of finding really strong players who can up my game, so I think we're all pretty close in skill level.

Its soooooooo cccccccooooooolllllllldddddd.

Question for you PM. How did you like playing with the dunlop, and are you using the prince now?

I'll play. But I booked with Tiki so he would have to agree. But next weekend or something I am game.

It would be nice to hit with someone who uses a real racket :)

I will let you know that for as long as the Winter Olympics is on, I will not be available in the morning. (I watch the taped delay re-run until 4am-ish)

Yeah I want to be on the receiving end of a weapon's grade racquet, and see what it's like.

I just love sports. There's a lot I can learn from watching these remarkable athletes (such as determination and heart!). And try to incorporate them into my game or training.

And I snowboard, so I can relate to just how difficult it is to do ANYTHING on snow and ice.

Yeah me too. I totally got into the speed skating last night though the american lost. Still fun to watch.

ICE TENNIS ANYONE?

I know I"m on SayChi's ignore list, but ....
How can he say snowboarding is any more difficult than any other sport?
1st day is difficult, but easier than surfing or windsurfing.
After that, it's a piece of cake.
Any sport done at pro or Olympic level's is difficult.
But lots of 10 day snowboarder's do the half pipe, can jump and spin at least 360's, and ride most double diamond hills by lots of sideskidding and jump turns.
Snowboarding is one of the easiest sports I've ever tried, along with kiteboarding.
How to tell if a sport is difficult or easy to learn? Look at the participants. If they are yuppies driving nice cars, it's easy to learn. Instant gratification.

Man shut up, when did I say it's MORE difficult than any other sport? I said it's difficult to do anything on snow. If you're going to start a stupid argument for no damn good reason, at least get it right.

Maybe I will put you on the ignore list. Because I know you're going to reply with something stupid and twist my words.

Tiki,
I can't seem to email you from the forum, so you can either email me at this username @ gmail address or just get my email from Shroud.

So if we have a foursome/fivesome I am game for setting up a time sometime next week to hit some doubles, just let me know.

What dunlop? I was trying out the Prince ESP racket but going from a 18x20 to whatever 16x pattern it was, not for me. Sticking with my EXO3's, my shoulder lovers that racket..

HMM. I swear last time you were crushing winners so bad against poor shroud that you needed to grab an old old midsize to make it fair because I was using the Prostaff. It looked blue and white and I thought you said it was dunlop.

Glad you skipped the 16x19 I think. You have plenty of spin....

Oh, the AG 100.. I used to play with the racket long time ago.
I just whip it out sometimes, it is so much fun to hit with it but a little demanding. But no sticking with the 100 square inches of Prince for now.

Hey Shroud...
Did you guys get it together? How'd it go?

Yeah we hit. I played crappy. Tiki hit really well. He's good and versed in the ways of the baseline game.

Hit with a freshly strung racket and went down to 23lbs. Weird. It felt dreadful and the racket just pinged like crazy.

Cool part is that I actually moved ok being 10lbs heavier. Lots of work ahead of me.

why don't you practice and have practice matches against the other 100 guys at Cal? No need for you to look for outside competition when you have all you can handle at the school.

Cool you guys got together. Any trouble getting on those courts?
23 seems a little on the soft side.
You know those two little girl's at SanPabloPark? The younger plays 62, her older sis around 60 on the Blade98 18x20's.

Courts were opened and I know the code from lessons.

FWIW when I was playing you last I was at 20lbs I believe maybe lower.

The prostaff is weird at low tensions. I need to dip it like I did the princes to take care of the resonance.

Its all about the arm, which took a beating on a framed overhead...
