4.5 Pusher vs 4.5 Basher @ USTA National 40s Hardcourts in La Jolla Cali

This match is a good example of a crafty pusher in the mens 40s vs a ball basher

This is usually what happens when these styles match up at the 4.5 level and above.

Every match is different, and many factors are at play.

I had always heard that the problem with USTA ratings is that they are subjective and vary by region, but holy crap I didn't think it was that much!

This is some bad looking tennis...around here (upstate NY, not exactly a hot bed of competitive tennis), this would be 3.5 to 4.0 at best??? What the hell.

There has to be a better rating system, most of the guys I play with at the public park would smoke these 2 and none of us consider ourselves much higher than 4-4.5.

It's so subjective...I've done blind flex league matches with dudes rated 4.5 who I smoke, and dudes rated 3.5 who give me a great match??? I think doubles result screw the whole thing up personally (I never play dub's, but my friends who do go up in rating very quick).

I'm sorry, just my opinion, and before anyone ask me to post vids of myself let me talk reality...I don't even like revealing the region I live in let alone the actual city, and I certainly am not putting any photo's ANYWHERE of me on the net...this world is full of wack job psycho's, and even on the light hearted TT threads I come across some crazy arse ideas on the way the world works! God bless those willing to do it..no thanks.

Awesome, lets arrange a match between your 4.5 40s in your area and this guy. Just say the word, and we'll put $ on the match :)

I'm just telling you what I'm looking at Cuz, maybe it's the camera angle. Are you impressed by this? I had to fast forward and every time I stopped they were picking up the balls, I mean were there any rallies over 3-4 hits?

My comment was more about the subjectivity of the ratings....have you traveled and played folks from regions hundreds of miles apart? If you have then you must have experienced this? I'm just saying it is frustrating and these dudes don't look like the 4.5's from Northern Jersey who come up to summer tourneys and kick our asses!

If any of the guys I play with are the type who want to reveal themselves on the net then I'll forward you the clips. If not, then it is what it is. Peace...out.

Not 4.5 - they can't keep the ball in play.
He sure does suck. I dont think he's better then a 4.0 . He's also crazy. He said he'll play your 4.5 over 40 player for a price of like 500 a match, or 200 a set

Go for it

A few things things...first, I'm not revealing my identity to anyone, on any online community forums...that's just me, and most sane people Bro..call me crazy, I like anonymity when it comes to revealing my opinions, that aren't always popular to total strangers!

Second...why so defensive? When you posted this did you expect everyone viewing to be like "oh my god, these guys rock"?

Finally your invite is the most non intriguing thing I could imagine. If someone gives me a heads up that a player is an annoying pusher I want to hug them. I play for 2 reasons...first is to have fun, second is to get a great workout. No thanks, I'll stick to getting beat by Division 1 College kids on break who run my arse all over the court and leave me on the verge of a heart attack!

Look at their good shots, they can be 5.0.
For sure, none of you are going to beat them in a real match.
I"m not saying I think they look like 5.0 here. But I can tell they will beat ME, a low 4.0, pretty much most of the time.

So even if we took $ off the table, you would still not want to set up the match?

Let me know when you'd like to set up a match.

We can use it as a forum experiment to see if what people think of a level is correct.

We can arrange the match 100% without your identity being known.

To each their own on the anonymity issue but I guess I don't know who the wacko psychos are that you're worried about. It's a tennis forum... who cares what anyone here really thinks? At others' urging since I joined I've posted my name, city, tournament results, ranking, video, etc... I'm an open book. And to no ill effect whatsoever. Of course I don't write anything here that I wouldn't want any other human to read, so I don't need anonymity. I stand behind what I write - maybe I'm crazy. Anyhow, to each their own, but...

...Absent proof (verified ranking, sanctioned tournament results, etc.) I just assume that everyone's at least a notch below their claim. Self-appraisal is the weakest, flimsiest arbiter of ability and thus should be discounted accordingly.

I'm not a good judge of NTRP but I could see these guys being 4.0 (certainly not below) or 4.5 (certainly not above). As many folks have pointed out here: video lies. It's better than self-appraisal, but it still misleads. The only way to know if you can really beat someone is to play them or beat someone they've lost to, or to play at a *verified* level (via sanctioned results) above them. Just my view...

Kudos on your "open book" lifestyle, I've been much more private my whole life, and not of the social media generation.

That being said, you are addressing what I was originally attempting to comment on, which is the disparity in stated "levels" vs what I actually observe. Whether it is in person (most of my experience) or on video, and yes this can be misleading...thus my reference to "camera" angles. I guess my comment simply came from once again being shocked that stated levels did not match what I saw.

Like I said, players ranked higher have not impressed me as opponents before, and players ranked below have! I guess there is no perfect system.

I would rate them at 4.0 from the video. I wasn't there so I can only go by the video and the skills I saw from this video.
White shorts appeared to be lower, he didn't attack serves at all, never attempted to drive returns deep, rarely went for a strong return, his groundies were avg at best, hit a bunch of short forehands or he would hit right back to the funky blue. He struggled with funkyblue high lob/high bounching shots.

Funkyblue had more skills, hit and set up points and control the style of play, he had better movement, better placement, he was rarely pressured by white shorts. White shorts 1st serve % was really low and that's why he couldn't hold. He should have taken more off the 1st. His 2nd serve didn't challenge or pressure funkyblue.

I don't think I would have an issue with either player based on what I saw on video. I couldn't judge speed but it didn't appear that they had a dominating or overpowering serve, white shorts lacks variety in his game and was very 1 dimensional player. Funkyblue squeaked the win and played his game.
I would serve and volley funkyblue, I wouldnt let him hit is high lobs, I would counter his slice and win by slicing hard out the alleys, I would make this guy run more, mixing hard forehanders and my bionic slice to beat him.

Exactly! I think in the past people here have said that some ATP pros were no better than 4.5 based on some videos posted here.
Ok I have to say something now. I have been lurking these boards for years, and this always comes up. Someone posts a video of match play and then people start claiming that it's way under whatever the NTRP is listed as. People will say a 4.5 is a 3.5 at best or whatever. It's starting to drive me crazy. If someone posts a video, of people with USTA ratings that aren't self rated, then that's what they're rated.

This has happened NUMEROUS times with people with solid computer ratings. It's like people don't understand that watching an actual video is way different than playing in a match.

I think these people just need to buckle down and fricking record themselves playing. News flash: you will look way way way WAAAAAAY crappier than you think you are.

I think it's because people are so used to watching the pros play on TV that it makes anything much lower than that level look REALLY bad. So compared to the 7.0 pros, a 5.0 on video looks more like a 3.5 to these people.

I would hardly call the OP a pusher. That being said ... why did you create a new thread for the same video for which you created a thread last year?

http://tt.tennis-warehouse.com/showthread.php?t=493034
I was wondering when someone would realize the OP was the pusher in the video. I believe he did it in response to a discussion in another thread about 'pushers' not being real tennis players.

To all the naysayers, the OP is a crafty player here in the Mid-Atlantic. He's a solid 4.5, with the ability to play at the 5.0 level (he was a 5.0 last year). In fact, "stalking" him on tennislink, I see he lost a tight singles match to a solid 5.0 in the Men's 40+ last month (looked to be a timed match).

While I've never played him, I've played next to him in many tournaments & USTA matches (FWIW, I'm also a 4.5, although I got the 5.0 bump this year, and should be back to 4.5 in 2016). He does an excellent job of frustrating his opponents by moving the ball around & absorbing their pace.

Yeah, the level looks right to me. It's just the video. I didn't watch much of it as there is too much down time, but both players have control of the ball. Most people don't realize it's not how you hit the ball. It's if you can get to the ball and hit it back!. Tennis is a movement sport, not a racquet sport!

What these type video+ratings posts generally have are one or two persistent responders who typically appear to:
a. not have a USTA rating themselves
b. not regularly play against actual USTA rated players
c. not watch themselves playing tennis on video
d. have more than one of the above apply

This thread is no exception. The answer is to not feed the rating trolls and this advise extends to the OP.

You are talking smack based on your opinion.

No need for anyone to travel or reveal their identity. Let's check the facts. Upstate NY would be USTA Eastern.

Last 5 USTA Men's 4.5 Nationals 18+ and Adult championships:

  • 2014 Winner Pacific NW, Eastern (Manhattan) went 1-2 did not make it out of their bracket
  • 2013 Winner Southern, Eastern (Westchester/Rockland) went 3-1 did not make it out of their bracket
  • 2012 Winner Southwest, Eastern (New Jersey) went 2-1 did not make it out of their bracket
  • 2011 Winner Middle States, Eastern (Westchester/Rockland) went 1-2 did not make it out of their bracket
  • 2010 Winner Carribbean, Eastern (Manhattan) went 2-1 did not make it out of their bracket

Last 5 USTA Men's 4.5 Nationals 40+ championships (40+ only in place since 2013):

  • 2014 Winner Middle States, Eastern (Manhattan) went 1-3 did not make it out of their bracket
  • 2013 Winner Northern California, Eastern (NJ) made it to the finals and lost 4-1

USTA NTRP does vary by region... Looks like Upstate NY 4.5s can't really compete with 4.5s from elsewhere.

I play 4.5 and a lot of the guys I play would look really bad on video. But they are match tough and know how to win, and that is what is going on in this vid.

The stroke technique is ok, but if you watch close you will see why this is not 3.5 tennis.

The first thing I noticed was white shorts guy approaches OP down the middle. A down middle approach on a 3.5 will result in a bad reply and an easy volley. That did not happen.

The rallies are patient. 3.5 tennis is not going to have rallies this long. I can play a 3.5 and fire deep, safe topspin over the net 3-5 times and will either get a short ball or an error. So you have to really think about the fact that winning at rec tennis is more of a mentality thing than a technique thing.

The good technique plus the good mental player will win at the 4.5 and up level, but many times good technique and good mentality take a while to sync up.

A friend of mine who is a decent player but rarely plays in tourneys decided to play in a tourney this past weekend. I advised him to play 4.0 since I've been in many tourneys. No, he said, he had seen the 4.5 guys play and he was not impressed by them. Well, he got beat 6-2 6-3 in the first round. The 4.5 just picked on any of my friend's weaknesses and played steadier. He rarely gave my friend a ball that he could do much with. Appearances can be deceiving.
The guys in the video are at least 4.5.

(btw I thought there was a way to play youtube videos at a faster speed but this one didn't seem to allow that.)

Sorry, fundamental prudence requires silence on your request... no reasonable person - even an "open book" such as myself - would release such information. "Nothing to hide" is both (1) a figure of speech, and (2) relative to context. I've provided more information about myself than 99.99% of posters here.

But this does explain why he was so defensive in the other the thread and essentially challenging posters to a fight in this thread.

+1. Until you watch yourself on tape (even better if it's more than once), I don't think you can really assess others properly.

OFF-TOPIC:

What racket do you use OP?
That video EX03 black , just switched to the new bab pure drive +. thanks buddy

Looks like Upstate NY 4.5s can't really compete with 4.5s from elsewhere.
you'll just get crickets from that blow hard

nice

First off, GUT you can't fool me, I know thats you :)

Obligatory TTW response:

No way those guys are anything more than 3.5s at best!

I know some 3.0s who have only been playing for a year that would give them a run for their money!
