4.5jumping to open in pursuit of 1glorious atp point

top gun is one of the biggest tourneys in southern california, they have a nice goodie bag with a hooded sweat shirt and some of the money goes to charities. Hence the higher fee. I would highly recommend should be a lot of depth in 4.5 and 5.0 singles

Are you coming to arroyo this sunday? :)

hey great improvements in your recent upload! definitely dont ever let anyone tell you that you cant do something. anything is always possible. for you to get to your goal, youll need a combination of two things. i know there are people telling you that you need to play with good players to get better which isnt completely true. you also need to play with some players that you know you can beat so you can keep your confidence high and not develop a habit of winning. from seeing the videos of the people you play with, youll need to come up with some sort of game plan (a plan that is your go to regardless of who youre playing) that will enable you to beat people that have no weaknesses. as long as you stay at the club level (not open) youll almost always play someone with a weakness. in order to get that so desired point, youre going to have to be able to beat people without weaknesses. the people at those futures tournaments are often considered "very good pushers" by many people. those people arent going to blast you off the court but at the same time theyre going to hit aggressively enough to keep you from dominating while also not making hardly any errors. if you keep the right mindset, you can do anything. keep working hard and once you find yourself beating those players that have seemingly no weaknesses then you know youre on your way.

That's a good point. I was playing a few points with my pro yesterday, and it was so hard to win points. He could just keep rallies going forever. My personality is to try to go on the offense, but I couldn't with him. It's tough playing someone with no discernible weaknesses.

and thats really the biggest difference from the club level player to the low level atp players. because those low level guys wont necessarily hit the ball any harder than you but they arent gonna miss and they are going to be quick and consistent enough to deal with nearly anything you throw at them

thanks for the kind words wings.

from the few open tournaments i have played i have definitely noticed how constistent these guys are. the guy i played that ws ranked around 250 in the 90's didnt really try and hit very hard. he just never made errors and had real good accuracy.

the guy in my last open tournament had some real nice pace. it was tough playing him because i wasnt used to setting up my shots that quickly.

the main thing i have been focusing on is my consistency and point construction. in these tournaments i would giv away so many free points going for winner from the baseline. i now focus on really trying to set up a string of 3-4 shots to eventually get a short ball that has a high percentage to put away. some of these guys are so consistent that you cant rely on free points and every point you must set up and take the offense. it is a weird balancing act you must play between being consistent and aggressive.

at least for now i know that my training is working because i am having much better success at 4.5's. i think by the begining of the year ill be ready to take a shot at another open. i have put together a nice training regimen with a good list of hitting partners and different types of play to train all aspects of my game. some days i just rally and drill and others i play doubles to work on my serve and volley. then some days i play online leagues where i practice how i want to play, not just to win. and the weekends i play usta league and tournaments to practice pressure and get tournament ready. also on the weekends i usually get a rally/drill session to get a good workout because some matches are short. i have also started focusing on nutrition and really want to get my energy levels to tip top shape. ive just started looking into weight training, but im pretty novice when it comes to this so im doing some research on the subject. i want to improve my strength and core muscles and eventually be in the best physical shape i can be.

so far i am really happy with my progress and hope to continue. i am not only extremely motivated, but am really enjoying the ride.

Good job. What I'm realizing, just to go to 4.5, it means tennis almost becomes a second job. Certainly a healthy hobby, but some conflicts with other obligations. Sounds like you're managing that pretty well, its 100% tennis. Which, really, is as it should be if you're trying to compete at open level or beyond.

i realized after some of those opens that just playing sets a few times a week wont cut it. coming from my skill level in highschool and not playing consistently for 5 years really put me behind a lot of these guys that play in college or teach or do something where they practice a lot of tennis. im really working hard at this and am taking it seriously and am happy with my results so far. im certain by january ill be ready for another open.

i know what your saying about managing your schedule and obligations. i had to create a tennis calendar just to manage my hitting sessions and tournaments and stuff. its hard to keep track of who your playing and where and what time. but, as i said before i am really enjoying it. if you dont enjoy it you wont be able to improve. i feel like when i miss a session or a practice i am cheating myself. hopefully i dont get burnt out.

i am having a minor setback though. my right wrist has been hurting a bit during warmup, but it gets better after about 5-10 mins of warmup. ive been icing to prevent further pain, but i cant take any time off. i dont have the luxury to take time off. all i can do is try and work on things that dont bother it as much.

on another note, i have a hitting session tonight and plan on taking some video of my bh. it has really improved and i want to analyze it, but also want to post a vid to get some tips and show some of the improvements ive been having.

quick update.
ive been playing a lot lately and am seeing the improvements in my game. i pretty much played every day for the last 2 weeks. however, my wrist has been hurting during warmup and im a little worried its not going to get better. i am now hybriding my bhbr with a syn gut to soften my racquet.

i have the top gun tournament coming up next weekend and am looking forward to getting in some good matches. also, my ultimate tennis season has been going for about 3 weeks and i am 3-0 without dropping a set. i would really like to win this season and move up to the highest division.

lastly, i took some video to show everyone my improvements in my bh. ive been working hard to get better and i feel my bh is becoming less of a liability. here is the link to the video.

ive decided that in either december or january i am going to enter another open. unless i dont do very well in my next 2 tournaments.

anyways, let me know what you think of the new bh.

Lol I thought you had a 1 HBH? In one of your earlier match videos all you hit were 1 HBH slice. This looks way more solid 8)

ya i used to only hit 1hbh slice shots. i remember playing matches where i wouldnt even hit one topspin bh. ive been working on this bh for about 3 months now and started from scratch watching youtube vids and taking advice where i can get it. im still not very confident with it in matches, but at least i can rally with it and hit some passing shots.

thanks tony. i saw u had a tough match in that last tournament in the finals.

Yeah was disappointing, I had pneumonia about 3 weeks ago, Im not sick or anything anymore of course, but I got really tired in the middle of the second set. It took my best through long hard points to beat him in the first set, and I ran out of energy. Hope to meet him again sometime for a closer match and a good chance to win. Anyways, hope all goes well working on your backhand!

ya, sunday was rained out. im excited for the rematch. it should be another good one. if you read this post tim, dont go eat another huge steak the night before. lol.

definitely not this time, unless someone is going to buy me a ~ $50 steak again :P . back to back matches sat is going to be tough. just hope there's no rain, this thing might go to dec.

how was your first match, looks like a close one by the score? I think I played pretty well in the first two rounds except for that one game where I had 5 double faults lol.

i hope there is no rain. i just signed up for the la habra tournament that is the following weekend and i dont want them to overlap. i have a usta team match at 430 too so if i do win our match ill still have two more which will be pretty tough. how did your usta team end up doing. we are 0-6 which is pretty sad, lol. i might be looking for another team next season if you need a singles player.

my first match was way closer than it should have been. i couldnt get into a rythm, but i was pretty sure i would get the win. looks like you just walked past your matches. i was actually hoping you would be in the other half of the draw because i knew you would be a very tough match. it should be another fun match though.

talk about overbooked, hope u don't work for the airlines.

I don't run the show for the team but I think we're in first place but could drop depending on the last match of the season.

how do you guys expect to win a match when you default 1 of 3 lines everytime? lol

70% chance of rain sat.

quick update-

i ended up losing the 4.5 top gun tournament to tim. it was definently a weird match. we started on sat and he took the first set 6-1 and then had me down 5-2 in the second when it started to rain. we had to postpone untill sunday morning. i was able to dig out of a hole and win the second set 7-5, but lost my momentum when he came out playing really well in the third. he was up 3-0 and there was nothing i could do and lost 2-6 in the third. it was a good match, but he was the better player those two days.

tomorow i have another tournament in La Habra. i signed up for open and 4.5 because i want to see how i fare in an open event again. i feel my bh has improved and shouldn't be such a weekness this time. the draws are posted and in my first match i am playing a kid named spencer simon. apparently he's pretty good from what i read. i noticed he is a lefty, which i am not too happy about because i dont like playing lefties. out of the 7 open matches i have played this will be the fourth time playing a lefty. anyways here are the draws.

i havent really posted in my thread for a while so i figured id give a quick update. i finally got a win in the open division. it was a good 3 set match and i was actually able to pull it out this time. my next match was defaulted and i was put in the semi finals to get beat pretty badly 0-6 2-6. i felt i played good, but he was a solid player. i took some film of the match, so for anyone that wants to see me get smoked here you go. i probably played the best on the third video.
also, if you see any glaring aspects of my game that need improvement, let me know.

Your opponent was really solid - nothing flashy, but good depth and didn't see him make many errors.

Your game reminds me of mine. Forehand is the weapon, backhand can come and go with some loose shots. I also play 2hbh drive and 1hbh slice. And I sometimes get lazy and end up hitting a weak slice instead of preparing earlier and hitting the 2-hander. Not that the slice is a bad shot; but it needs to be hit with purpose or not at all. I try to focus on that - prepare early on the BH, get the feet in position, hit the 2 hander more often than not, and throw in the slice on occassion especially on low balls, but make sure to hit through it to keep it low and with bite.

Which one is you?

He lost 0 & 2. Pretty obvious who is who.

I'm black. You all look alike to me. ;)

Meanwhile, back on topic.....you look like the kind of player who likes pace, and he didn't give you any. Against players like that, you have to be patient and go for the winner when the opportunity presents itself. You move well for a guy with your body type, so I think you can play the waiting game with a guy like that.

I don't mean to sound crass or try to crush your dreams. I played a money open tournament a few weeks ago. I was coming in playing great tennis, crushed a 4.5 at my club that week, so had hopes I could at least get a few games. And, in fact, I did win my first match against a local high school player.

But in the 2nd round, a local junior college player toyed with me before destroying me completely, 6-0, 6-0. And he went on to get destroyed in the next match. And THAT winner got destroyed in the next one by a guy who used to have ATP points. And the former pro then lost in straight sets in the semi's.

And none of these guys would be able to win a futures first round match, or even get through the qualies. Those guys live and breathe tennis, training every day for hours with no other distractions.

So play a lot and progress, and then try your hand at money open tournaments, and you will see what I'm talking about.

Funny thing about tennis so many levels.

He wants a point when there's really no point.

He'd still need to qualify (3-4 matches in usa) and win main draw match atleast three times to ensure direct entry to lesser non usa futures event. Forget about entering usa.

That's 9-12 qualifying matches and 3 maindraws in a row. An impossible task for usta hacker and impractical for medium 5.0-5.5 college player.

Tennis is just a bad choice sport to play in usa. There's no money for players in futures, just can't hang there for long without going bust.. Even very good tony lars is selective in weighing up the travel + accom costs to benefits.

If OP is serious about a point, gather up six friends, go over seas join a claycourt academy for 6-9 months. Get superfit and learn good training techniques. Then select weakest far out of the way futures you can find. If any decent, should make it to final rd of qualifying after beating 14 local jrs (draw fillers) and your friends. Then prepare get ass kicking in final round or maindraw.

Oh most important to have a very attractive female supporting you in the stands, that's half the battle won. ;)

ya, im trying to get some match footage. its hard because i have to have my gf or someone else come and film for me, and then i need to get a good court with stands or a decent location to film from. the usc stadium was perfect because the stands were above the court. im going to see if i can get some video of this weekends tourny.

i know, i need to get in much better shape. im pretty quick on the court right now, but i would be so much quicker if i dropped 20 to 30 lbs. also, when i get to that 3rd set im ussually super tired and dropping weight would really help that issue.

Props for putting yourself out there on yt.

I'm sorry, i call your style of play bash and crash. All boom winners setup off the serve until facing a decent player who get returns back and move you around then there's no more chu chu puff coming from you. Reminds me of an ex team mate.

Tips are to lose the weight, work on movement and don't miss easy balls into net, hello fh!

Practice at level you want to play. Hunt down those 5.0.

You're a good player winning at 4.5 and sandbagging those 4.0. :D

First, I would like to say that I enjoyed reading your thread. I'm glad to see you are progressing and winning some tournaments as well.

Personally, I don't want to take anything away from your opponent, but I didn't think your opponent had the game to beat you 0-2. After watching the videos, I thought you beat yourself. Too many unforced errors. I only saw where your opponent hit 3 - 5 winners throughout the videos. Not sure if you intentionally edited the videos that way or not.

Strategically, I would advise being more patient. I know if you are playing 2 or 3 matches in a single day, you get tired and can start losing focus. You then start going after instant winners. You need to recognize the situation and reel yourself in and get focused again.

Tactically, it would have been good if you played more angled shots. Your opponent most of the time stood 4-5 ft behind the baseline. It gave him some time to handle your pace. Playing angled shots brings him closer to the baseline. You can then unleash your forehand giving him less time to handle your pace.

Hope to see you keep progressing and good luck!

Agree with the previous poster. Improve on the conditioning and the movement will get better and likewise your shot consistency etc, etc. You must be a pretty good athlete to carry that much and still play at this level. Would love to see you maximize your full potential by first dropping down to about 175 or so... :)

i know, after the match i was going through why i lost in my head. i knew i had way too many errors and i needed to work the points more. i think i just started off bad and then just couldnt get into a groove to keep up with his consistency. i noticed from the vid that most of my approach shots were either to weak and set me up to be passed or i just burried them into the net. i am going to work a little more on my footwork during my approach shots when im coming to the net.

my game does involve me hitting winners, but i have been re-tooling it to be more consistent. i have been watching quite a few videos about court positioning and strategy and that has been helping me a lot. i noticed on the video that many times i would hit a very good shot and just kind of stand there. then he would come back with a decent shot and i would lose my advantage i just had. on many drop shots i had i should have chipped and charged, but i just hit the drop and stood there waiting for him to hit it back and then he would drop me and i would be on defense again. its the little things that i am working on to get better.

its funny how hard tennis can be. somedays i feel like i can come out and my racquet is excallibur and can do no wrong. then somedays i cant even keep a rally going. even though i lost 0-6 2-6 i know i can hang with these players. with all the progress i have seen just in the last few months, i know i will continue to progress and get better. i think i am going to keep doing opens because the game is so much different than 4.5. i dont really care if i lose, the experience will be worth. anyways i beleive my next tournament is in the beg of jan so hopefully i can get some good wins.

on a side note. this weekend i won my 5.5 ultimate tennis league without dropping a set. i finally got into the 6.0 highest division that i have been trying to get into for 4 seasons.

I watched the third vid, and this confirms what I noticed before: you have a very good FH and a decent serve, but your BH is quite weak. Basically you can have success against anyone who can't consistently exploit your BH (that guy in the vid had a pretty weak serve and couldn't place it on your BH). My guess is that the guy who beat you 0 and 2 probably found your BH much more.

After hitting with yonexpurestorm today here is my sum up of him:
Forehand is amazing powerful however error prone. His backhand is a very neutral shot though not good but not bad. He can pull a few winners off of it for passing shots. Its best to keep away from his forehand though, he keeps you back then pulls a drop.

However the main difference that gives him an advantage over many players is his serve. I've never been aced more than twice by anyone (3 stars, 4 stars) but yonex aced me 6 times today. However if I were him, I would be serving and volleying with that serve.

Slice was also a great shot maybe overused but still a heavy and low Skimmer. Its a better weapon to set up the point than his topspin BC his backhand sits up a bit.

Yonex good luck in your tourneys and try to be neutrally attacking. Don't hit for a winner. Your serve was the best weapon and is the best weapon against anyone it pulled you out of tricky moments and helped you take the win. :)

I hope to play some more with you! I'm glad I wasn't beaten down. As a fun jester, I had finals and school so I'm rusty. ;) hahaha jk. I'll always have a problem against your serve.

His serve looked good on video which usually means it is even better when you seen it IRL.

Definitely first serves must be around 100-120. Second serves had a lot of kick. I'd say his forehand, slice, and serve are 5.0+ worthy material. Backhand is still solid for 4.5.

thanks for the kind words marinahigh. this is actually a very accurate description of my game. i have tried to serve and volley, but i just dont feel comfortable doing it all the time. i dont have the best putaway volleys and i feel like at the net i am vunerable to the pass, but it is something im working on.

my errors are a huge weakness in my game. i try to slow things down and not try and hit a winner all the time, but sometimes my body doesnt listen to my brain, lol. as for my serve, it is usually not as good as it was last night. i hit a groove and felt i was serving pretty good. i wish i knew someone with a radar gun and could see how fast it is actually going. you made it hard though because usually when im serving that good i get nothing but cheap free points from errors from my opponent. but you were returing them deep enough to give me trouble.

the drop shot is something ive been working on lately. i realized how many free points i can get when ppl back up waiting for a big forehand and then i drop it.

it was a fun match and we will definitely have to play again.

Just out of the curiousity, what was the score and who won the match between you and marinahigh?

we only played one set and just rallied the rest of the time, but i won the set 7-5. it was back and forth. he went up 3-1 but my serve caught fire and made the comeback.

It was a good match indeed. At 4-3 40-15 on my serve I couldn't believe I double faulted twice to let you break and then had you serve for the match at 5-4. You have several matchpoints then I broke to 5-5. Then you broke and won 7-5. Those crucial points haha for me and you. I could of had a comfortable lead at 5-3 and then you could have won the match at 6-4.

btw Yonex it looks like my draw is stacked full of good players so... we need to hit. Maybe we should vid with my camera and gorillapod and I'll be playing a lot more tennis next week with good players (you, Kevin Young, etc. WITH VIDEO :))

EDIT: btw you should come by Marina High School and play with the guys there. They're really good players and we got top 4 in OC last year (after University, Corona del Mar, Woodbridge, Marina)

We played best out of 3 with a 3rd set 10 pt. tiebreak
7-5 2-6 10-7, If we played a 3rd set he would have won.
This is highlights, non edits will be uploaded in 130min (i edited out ball picking up though)

btw what should have been a recording of a full match ended up wasted bc of camera problems and the camera tilt in the 2nd set forward

Whats going on:
(me): Forehand down the line was good, backhand was solid, serve bad at first then warmed up to normal, approach shots good, backhand sliced failed me today (everytime he served to my backhand and I sliced it, I lost)
(him): Forehand good, backhand led to many short balls in which I attacked, serve bad at first then became normal, the forehand kept me in check.

The bad thing especially for both of us was the numerous double faults, we both got an ace but the double faults messed us up.

@yonex: do something similar to what I did (what you thought was good and bad from both of us)

Nice hitting with yonex. Next week more

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Where you at Jamison?

Hey yonexpurestorm, hows the training going? keep this thread alive! i see you are in a tourney this weekend, good luck! I wanted you to play the Arcadia tourney the last couple weekends so we could have a chat. Keep up the good work and keep grinding!

it has been a while since i have given an update, ive been too busy and just started coming back onto these boards. i didnt even really have chance to respond to marina's post. i took a few weeks off tennis during christmas and new years because i couldnt really get anyone to get out on the courts. i admit i wasnt going through my whole list of hitting partners, but for the last 3 weeks i have been hitting around 4 times a week and am feeling good.

i played one open tournament in anaheim and did not do well at all. i didnt train or really prepare so i deserved the loss. however in the upcoming months i will be playing quite a few tournaments and will be training hard, eating healthy, and practicing much more. ive been focusing on my serve lately, and am really trying to get some more variety with it. one of my hitting partner told me he knew where my serve was going every time and i needed to mix it up. im also working on my consistency. i realize this is why i am losing. i make so many unforced errors and give away free points way too much. my bh is always a work in progress, but it is getting a lot better and i am actually quite satisfied with the work i have done on it. im still trying to drop around 20 lbs so i can go into the 3rd set without having jello legs. overall i think i am progressing well and have high hopes for the upcoming 2012 season. my main goal this year is to win the HB open and win a few rounds in the futures qualies during the summer.

and for anyone that is interested, here is a list of tournaments i plan on entering in the next few months.

anaheim hills racquet club, open div. the draws are up for this weekend
