4 years in a row WTF title goes to a non-Big-3 player. Conclusions?

Does 2019 WTF prove that Big 3 are no longer best, or is it further proof that WTF is an Exho?

  • It's become an Exho hence why slam champs haven't been winning it since 2017

  • It's a sign that the Big 3 will not dominate anymore

  • Both

G.O.A.T.
First Federer dominated it with 6 titles, then Djokovic with 5. The last Big 3 trophy was in 2015. The last trophy won by SuperGen was Murray in 2016. Since then it's been two for LostGen and one for NextGen. (Unless Tsetsefly wins it, in which case it's 2 for NextGen, 1 for LostGen.)

2017 and 2019 finales did not involve any of the Big 3. That's two of the last three.

There can be no dilemma anymore that the Big 3 have lost their grip on the greatest Exho event on the planet.

But will there ever will be another WTF title for the Big 3? Or is Djokovic's 2015 win the last Big 3 triumph there?

On a side-note...

Youzhny retired this year, was present at the retirement ceremony in London. The actor Woody Harrelson was also present this week at WTF.

Do you believe they met?

Big 3 cannot dominate BO3 the way they used to. I could see 1-2 more titles but not year after year like Federer and Djokovic used to.

Winning the WTF is very tricky for several reasons and it's not surprising to me that the Big 3 have failed to lift the trophy since 2015.

It is the last tournament in the season when all the players are pretty much exhausted, older players in particular (Federer, Nadal, Djokovic...they are not the spring chickens anymore).
You also have to compete against the top 8 (more or less) players in the world and any lack of consistency or focus usually result in defeat as these guys represent the cream of the sport.

When it comes to Federer and Djokovic, I believe the biggest reason for their lack of success is their age.

Well, Nadal was simply robbed this year. He might end up as a guy who beat the winner of the tournament. If that's not a joke then I don't know what is. :-D :-D :-D :-D
There is no such a thing as robbed because those rules were not made yesterday. The problem with you and with other Nadal fans is that you can't accept a tournament that is different from the other tournaments and that's mainly because Nadal has failed to win it.

First time in the history of tennis that the no 1 player is disallowed from playing the semis after winning two previous matches?

Only at WTF...

I don't care if he won it or not. He skipped it so many times, and even when he played it he had really bad luck. He should never play this tournament again. It is a total waste of time and energy.

Don't be too surprised if Nadal will play it again next year if he is not injured.

He should just focus on clay and clay alone

60 of 84 titles

Why should he only focus on clay when he is the current US Open champion.

It's Federer who should retire as no Slams won in last 2 years. Let's hope the announcement comes soon from team Federer. He will be missed.

First off, you do care, just maybe not as much as other things, lets not get ridiculous. You can pooh Pooh WTF all you want, but it is not meaningless and you know it. If so, then Olympic Gold would fall in the same category. Both would be nice for the big 3 to grab their missing title, but it is not that big of deal is what you truly mean.

As far as luck, I hear Rafa is unlucky at AO too, so now we just say he has had bad luck at any tourney he struggles to win?

That's Nadal's job and he is doing it extremely well. Federer is not needed for that either. Let's hope the old man does the right thing and announces retirement soon so he can spend more time with the fam.
He'd rather they spend their childhood at hotels and watching a yellow ball fly left and right...

RF really should have waited with making kids if he wanted to play till he's 50.

I understand why you want Fed to retire . Nafsl has not beat Fed since how many years ?

It makes sense. The WTF is scheduled around a time when the players are pretty tired. It makes sense that younger players are more likely to win it.

Big three get fixed draws so they meet in the semi's for big tournament money. Beat them and your forever in the other side of the draw

Their weary old legs don't work so good this late on in the season. Especially in Dystopian London November weather, the wind blows through their weary old bones, and the youngsters pick 'em off. It's Dickensian stuff.

The first stage of the WTF is a league format so Nadal didn't advance because against the entire group field he was outperformed by Tsitsipas and Zverev by the matches won, set win/loss ratio and game win/loss ratio metrics.

Some Nadal fans love using unofficially rated or valued stats but here we are with officially counting stats not in Nadal's favour.

2 of last 3 were 1HBH.

Mmmhmmm.

Anyways realistically it just doesn't mean much to the big guys unless YE #1 is on the line. The money is peanuts so that's no motivation and ranking points again unless you can get #1 doesn't mean much either.

I think it was meaningful this year to Nadal and Roger is a professional but all he had going was record extending 7th title which he may or may not care with Nadal being 1 Slam shy he's likely gunning more for AO.

Always seemed a bit of an exhibition tourn to me but i've only really been aware of it since London. Couldn't help thinking Jack Sock and Nick Kyrgios somehow belonged in the mix.

You pretty much made it very clear that you DO care about it.

Nobody speaks so much about the injustice and even creates a thread about it if he doesn't care.

I mean, what person would complain about something he doesn't care about?

Because it's annoying that Nadal ended up beating the winner of the tournament, yet he left it with exactly the same results as Medvedev who lost 3 matches in a row. It sounds like a joke. Impossible in any other tournament.

Well, in any other tournament, Nadal would have been out of the tournament after his first match. Instead, he was given a life line, but in the end wasn't as good as the other 2 who qualified.

It's that simple. I don't see the unfairness.

Honestly, I'm tired of hearing about Nadal not being good enough to win WTF. Right, Dimitrov and Tsitsipas are sooooooooooo much better than him. Sure. I'd like to see Tsitsipas beating 2010 Federer or 2013/2015 Djokovic. If he won 3 games against 2019 Djokovic in Paris then I bet he would be lucky to win 1-2 games.

1. If he didn't make the final -> he wasn't better in those particular year editions
2. If he made it to the final and lost it -> he wasn't better in those particular year editions

That's Logic, witch a capital "L".

In how many tournaments, the #1 player is allowed to go to the semis after losing in one of the earlier rounds?
It's not like Nadal won 3 RR matches and was kicked out of the tournament, isn't it?
"L"ogic
