4G vs. Confidential?

For the past few years I've been playing with Luxilon 4G 16L. Like the tension maintenance. Didn't seem to die as fast as ALU power.
For fun tried Solinco Confidential 17. Seems fairly comparable, maybe a little better feel/crispness compared to the 4G. I was wondering what people thought in regards to tension maintenance? Last longer or shorter than 4g?

I am currently playing with confidential 16g. The tension holds well and the playability last long. I use to play with 4g. The only difference to note is that Solinco Confidential strings are shaped polys. It is in the same boat with 4g with holding tension and lasting playability.

Confidential will "Open Up" compared to 4G. It's a pretty unique feeling. Gets a little softer, and you get better pocketing as time wears on with confidential. 4G is a more consistent, deader, controlled offering.
Thanks. Was considering Confidential but after reading this I will stay with 4g!

With you and your Kev/4G setups and crazy high tensions (and differentials), I agree you should stick to 4G.
What can I say, I like it firm.

FWIW I played 3 games with a poly at 35lbs today. I was just slicing and volleying because normal shots were sailing...

Well, I really liked the Confidential but it seemed to go dead today after 2 weeks of busy play. I could not get a good feel for the ball at all today with the Confidential. So after a lousy set, went to the 4G. I missed some of the comparative liveliness of the Confidential, but the 4G was firm and consistent.

As jangotango said that the Confidential seemed to "Open up" and played really well. But then it died.

I started playing with Luxilon Alu Power when I went to polys, I'd love it for several sessions only to hate it when it went dead. And it seemed to vary for me, often out of nowhere. Sometimes it would be a week, sometimes I thought I got a month out of the stuff. But the inconsistency was frustrating. Plus the cost. Went to Kirschbaum Proline 2. Maybe not as much spin/pop compared to Alu Power, but still good, cheaper and seemed to las a little longer---but would still go dead. Hence at the recommendation of a buddy went to 4G.

4G seems to have less pop and spin, but is just damn consistent. After 1-2 sessions it looses a little and then holds for a long time. Doesn't seem to drop off like other polys do but gradually fail, avoiding the dead out of nowhere feeling which wreak havoc with my game. I feel on a bad bed of 4G you can get work through it until you get home to restring. With other polys, you feel screwed once it is dead and just want to smash your racquet!

I still have another pack of Confidential to go, so I'm gonna give it another spin. I really enjoyed it at the beginning. Not sure I want to give up 4G if I have to start restrining racquets every 1-2 weeks, which would mean strining weekly with the racquets being rotated.

@Robert F From your description, you should give 17 gauge Tourna Silver 7 Tour a try. If you can avoid problems with shear breakage, it offers a good amount of the liveliness of Alu Power but is more durable and retains its playability a lot longer. The 16 gauge version is the best poly at tension maintenance as tested by Tennis Warehouse. Silver 7 Tour is also fairly immune to slight drops in tension so if you do try it, string it up a couple of pounds less than you would for the 4G.

You do know that 4G is factory pre stretched, right? That is the reason the string can play consistently until you cut it out or break it. 4G and RPM team are IME the best of the factory pre stretched poly strings. Unless you can stretch the static tension losses out of the string, poly will almost always fall off a cliff performance wise. Pro Line II series is also pre stretched, but not as much as the other 2. IIRC, Mr. Shroud pre stretches his 4G too even tho it is already factory pre stretched. He also use to do this with Prince Tournament Poly 1st Gen until it was no longer available at TW. If you manually stretch any 20' length of poly permanantly to 20'4'-20'6", you will have only elastic tension losses to deal with when the string is installed. 3¢

+1 for Silver 7 Tour. Although you did not explicitly state what you're looking for in a string that 4G doesn't offer, it sounds like you're looking for a more consistent and playable ALU Power, but haven't found it and thus is stuck on 4G. Silver 7 Tour is crisp, lasts a darn long time, not too stiff, and has a very nice pocketing - somewhere between the openness of confidential and firmness of 4G.

You could also try 4G Soft, ALU Soft, and Max Power.

Overall I've been satisfied with 4G. Just wondering with it being so firm is there something that gives a little more power and spin without losing consistency/tension maintenance. Writing down Silver Tour and KB Max Power. Thanks!

@Robert F feel free to have a look at the TWU's String Performance Database . If you sort the strings based on tension loss percent you'll notice that Silver 7 tour and Kb Max Power perform a smidgen better than 4g in tension maintenance. I'm using Max power, and my previous string was the 4G. Max Power, feels a bit less stiff and definitely more powerful than 4g. I prefer its feel over 4g's . Silver 7 tour is next on my list as well.

Gotcha. I take back my Max Power recommendation. It's at least low-powered as 4G. If you are willing to spend a bit of $$$, instead of Max Power try ALU Soft.

You should try Tier One Black Knight, wonderful playability, great durability and a consistent feeling through all is lifespan.
I alternate it with Silver 7 tour, very good string also, a bit more crisp and powerful

All strings feel more crisp/live/feel/plush than 4G but after 4-5 sessions they are just meh strings that lost their characteristics, specially the shaped ones. 4G will play the same for almost 4 weeks.... it will only get plusher and less consistent. That’s why i love it..... no surprises! People love or hate the way it feels there is not a middle ground. For me it’s the only string that gives me the sense of heavy punching the ball..... all these years only Lynx Tour satisfied me like 4G in terms of control.

I've been back with my 4G. I think I've been greedy wanting a string that can do it all. Been brainwashed by the hype--"adds power, spin and control" that the industry hammers at us. I think 4G does a lot of good stuff, just greedy for more. Tried another round of Confidential, I like it but don't love the consistency of 4G.
I'll probably try some of the suggestions here for sure.

4G soft has everything you are asking for.

On the side note: I was practicing with a friend during a week who just got H22 from top 50 pro. I look at the strings: 4G soft:cool:

I love 4G in very sunny conditions and hate it in cold cloudy or night time... its easy to find sweet effectiveness in the sun and as if the sweetspot and much effect on the ball disappears without the sun
