4th set of 2000 Australian Open SF, one of the best sets ever

Note: I am talking about this here and not on Former Pro to bring it to attention to some people that might have not seen it, rather than people who watch this all day long. Also for better visibility.

The set starts around 1:44:00 mark until 2:32:00, so roughly 48 mins of pure brilliance, but I would suggest watching from 1:40:30 mark, Sampras won a 7-0 TB in the 3rd, playing absolutely perfect, with 2 winners, 2 aces, 2 unreturnables and 1 Agassi error.

Starting with the match stats:

This is a set where both players gave all they had, it had a combined 48 winners to 7 UE, absolutely ridiculous.

Pete was straight up unplayable on serve, serving at 70%, with huge speeds and great placement, yet, in spite of that, Agassi won a very high 32% return points, you have to see it to believe it how well Andre was returning that set against a barage of serves.
Mind you, Pete hit aces on 41% of his serves, that's around 16-17 aces in 40 service points played, yet it was still an amazing return display.

Somehow, Andre wasn't the only one returning great in this set, as Pete managed to return the favour and win 32% return points, as well as be the player who had more BPs, against an Agassi who was serving well in his own right.
At 2-1 Pete hit 2 straight return winners of the BH and forced another error with a FH to get 2 of his BPs. Game starts at 1:54:15 mark.

At 2-2, the next game, Andre got his only BP for the set.
That's a game were Pete hit 4 aces and 1 winner. In the same game, Andre hit 2 clean winners and 1 forced error to get his BP at 30-30.

At 3-2, the very next game, Pete gets another BP off some quality offensive play, which Andre saves with a clean winner and procceds to force another error and close the game with an ace

The 2nd part of the set, from 4-3 to 7-6 featured only 2 UE in 5 games + 1 TB.
The TB was top notch, with the highlight being Sampras hitting two 2nd serve aces and overall exceptional quality from both.
Sampras was spent after this one and faltered in the 5th.

I would take this set over any of their sets from the infamous 2001 USO QF and overall one of the most exceptional sets of tennis I have seen thus far.

Feel free to discuss about any set of tennis you have seen that reaches a sustained level of brilliance like this one.

One of the greatest matches of all time, imo. The only meeting I’d say that trumps that match would be their US Open ‘01 QF match. Maybe I’m biased cause I was their as a kid, but this match had lots of drama.

Yeah, they didn't have any classics back in the day, but all of a sudden played 2 epic matches in 2000 and 2001.
I would rate their 2001 USO QF ahead as well.
But the 4th set here takes the cake, best tennis they played against each other imo.

Yep, and too bad Agassi didn’t play well between ‘96-and early ‘98, they would’ve more classic matches imo. Would you say the 4th set in that match alone was close to their peak ala ‘95?

I stayed up all night to watch this match and still have it on VHS. One of my favorites, and as a huge Andre fan I was convinced he would lose, as he generally did to Pete in big matches. Not this time! I remember screaming when Andre broke Pete for the second time in the fifth, knowing he was going to win it. Great to see someone else appreciating the brilliance of these two Americans tennis legends.

One other thing: you notice there is almost zero toweling off or time wasting between points. These two always just got down to business.

Eh, Agassi had superior ballhitting during his better parts in AO 95 F, but the serve and return were top notch in this set. His ballhitting was great, nonetheless.

As for Sampras, he was obviously less potent from the baseline, but was pretty inspired in this set, especially on return.
His movement around the court wasn't the sharpest in this match and neither was his BH for the bigger part. Instead, he did well at the net to make up for it.

His serving performance was as good as it gets, truthfully ridiculous stuff.

I was sick as a dog with the flu during this tournament (and we had gotten the biggest snow of my life where I lived) and during this match but I still had to watch it and yes that 4th set was crazy. It was one of the most intense sets of tennis I've ever watched.

Special shoutout to Andre dropping the 2nd serves under 120kph in the end.
From a Murray fan? Your guy was struggling to clear 70mph, that with being 6'3" and using psychic strings lol. You were mentioning getting a high off hypocrisy in another thread? lmao

I never claimed Murray had a great 2nd serve. In fact I have memed it on many occasions.

But hey if the only defense for your guy is a whataboutism about a player I like, I have a decent grasp of whether it's worth continuing here.

Nice edit, but presumably you think Murray played great in some of his matches where he second served 70mph? Don't see why you'd be "shouting out" Andre for hitting 70mph second serves that were actually effective and well placed lol.
