I think it can be pretty really easy, guys. Play tennis hungry, then skip the meal after playing. Eat whatever with good nutrition later! Repeat until you reach your ideal body composition. Basically just intermittently eat like one really good meal a day

Never tried this one. 5-7 days is a good amount of time for any fast tbh.

Maybe consider doing it for like 48-72hrs first and see how that works. Maybe keep you in the good books with the wife too :)

I def got in trouble at end of day 4 when wife was craving something and I told her I couldn't eat..... won't be doing 5 days again. Too cumbersome for family bonding imo

It bothers me so much, like excuse me for trying to be healthy.

That's what I was doing last Fall before family had a +1.

Would eat between 6-8pm as last meal, play tennis the next morning 1.5-2.5hrs (with plenty of H2O and electrolytes). Have lunch around Noon.

If it wasn't tennis in the AM then at least a run with a light workout. Felt awesome and was pretty easy to do once I got into the habit of it. Actually ended up doing a full 18hrs one day when a practice session hit nearly 3hrs since we split sets and played a full 3rd.

My wife would claim that it's NOT healthy and that's why she's against any "crash dieting" like that. But a "crash diet" of only a few days is not harmful, as long as you're not over exerting yourself in those days. There is plenty of peer-reviewed scientific evidence that 5-7 days will not affect your metabolism or make you ill, is the most effective way to burn fat, and if you consume enough protein and lift heavy in very low volume will not lose much if any muscle.

Mine says it's not fun to go out if I only eat salad and drink seltzer.

I don't see the point in 24 & 36hr fasts unless you're doing it prior to training to increase natural hormone production. 16hr is good as a daily lifestyle but for longer time frames I would recommend 4 to 5 days as minimum as the first 72 hrs are the hardest. There's a point in day 3 / 4 where hunger just goes and it quiet easy. Just need electrolyte and maybe Multi Vit if worried.
My last fast was 12 days. Day 4 to 10 was easist. I only played doubles and did lighter weights.
I found I was dropping about 1kg during this phase.
Once over the hunger state, if feeling good and have excess body fat keep going until feel flat or weak. There's plenty of YouTube videos which help.
One thing I found was I can't fast when working. I need food for more than sustenance. My last fast was over Christmas holiday. I find I need to be moving when fasting, walking and active. My work is mental so use food as break, etc. My previous 4-5 day was over a long weekend.
I just had a major Op so have put a lot of weight on, I'll start fasting once mending done.
Yeah same. I've tried it but just impossible to do any sort of focused work without real fuel.

There's other various reasons for it than weight loss and detox. Short answer, developing consistency, discipline, weight loss. A man of my stature (shorter) has bouts of using the restroom and eating as much as the others that are taller. Not as if I'm trying to be the life of the party all of the time. Which is a phase I've been through and lacked any sort of discipline there of. I am not keen on doing it again. It's a process, recover/fast, then eat. I seem to like myself more when i do commit to recovering, I play better and im more attentive on the court. It's much more about what goes on off the court then what goes on the court for me. It's all part of the bigger picture. I'm not where I was before weight wise. I'm still on a journey to achieve and maintain the best shape of my life ( i can)

Tried my first intermittent fast. 17 hours. Since 8 of that is sleep, it wasn't bad at all.

Might try a longer one next time. Not trying to lose weight. Just exploring healthy things.

Bought some calcium citrate and magnesium to add to my water (+ salt) in case I exercise or play tennis the next time I try fasting for a longer period.

One thing about this is that the regularity and duration definitely depends on the body, height, shape, size. For me, my body type is difficult to maintain. I'm the perfect candidate. Still demanding at times and I give in a lot. I'm only just beginning and I should have started years and years ago!

Work and baby duties have been hectic. I mention the on-court coaching (though it is work) because it's nearly 80-90degrees for almost all of my work day so water loss is pretty high. AM weight is recorded after using the restroom each time for consistency. However, after day 2 there was no Bowel Movement.

Here are the final results:

6/06 Day 1: AM weight ~ 167.8lbs
Around 2 gallons of H20
2 shots of Espresso (completely forgot that this has some carbs + sugar -around 5g total- Oops!
2 "Soups" with Salt, Turmeric, Black Pepper, Garlic Seasoning, ACV, other spices. Around 40oz total (included in 2 gallons of H20)

About 45 lunges and 40 pushups total throughout the day
15 mins of hitting (in a lesson)
4hrs on-court coaching

Felt pretty solid, enjoyed the day and had pretty high energy.

6/07 Day 2: AM weight ~ 165.4lbs
Around 1.5 gallons of H20
2 coffee
1 "Soup" with Salt, Turmeric, Black Pepper, Garlic Seasoning, ACV, other spices. Around 20oz total (included in 2 gallons of H20)

No fitness
7.5hrs on-court coaching

Felt great again, no aches or pains, long day on court.

6/08 Day 3: AM weight ~ 162.6lbs
Around 1.5 gallons of H20
1 coffee

No fitness
8hrs on-court coaching

Starting to have some joint pains, definitely due to dehydration. Atlanta summer coaching is pretty rough. Calfs were getting tight, likely due to being on my feet for the majority of the day.

6/09 Day 4: AM weight ~ 160.5lbs
Around 1.25 gallons of H20
1 coffee

No fitness
0hrs on-court coaching

Much easier day (due to no work) tried to rest as much as possible, stay cool indoors and stay focused. Felt much better knowing that it was close to the 5-day mark.

6/10 Day 4: AM weight ~ 159lbs
Around 1.25 gallons of H20
1 coffee

No fitness
5.75hrs on-court coaching

PM weight before completing day 5 ~ 157.9lbs
Was a pretty tough day on court, heat was intense and quite humid. Looking forward to the end of the night at 10:30pm to break the fast. Ended up breaking it with a small salad (cheese, sauteed chicken, olive oil, light veggies) and a low-carb fat bar.

Conclusions:
- Overall weight has stabilized every morning since around high 159, low 160.
- Feel very solid, no more aches and pains from dehydration (was hard to scarf down water each day in high quantities, though I definitely should've had more).
- Still doing intermittent fasting. Since Saturday, had a 14, and an 18hr fast.
- Focused on very low-carb intake since and keeping veggies/fiber and protein as majority portion of meals.
- MCT Oil Coffee, half & half, stevia and some coconut milk coffees since then. I don't care for caffeine but I love the taste of coffee.
- Forgot to measure actual fat loss and such but differences were noticeable along the stomach area and on the face. I'm 5'9 and in my playing days hovered around 150-155lbs.
- Would love to do this again but not for 5 days. I feel 48-72hrs 2x per month along with regular 16-18hr fasts are the best for me. Need to keep fitness regular and then feeling like back to playing shape from 2013!

JULY UPDATE
So as of this week, still checking weight in the AM and it floats between 159-161lbs.

Essentially doing OMAD or eating 1-2 meals within a 4-6hr window between around 11:30am-5:30pm.
Working out great with a high fat/low carb and majority vegetarian diet with smaller quantities of meat most days. Occasional days with higher carnivore content.

Haven't felt the need to do another fast since most days I'm doing a 16-20hr fast.

Looking to start some small-medium distance running again as well and will take mental note on how much body is able to handle the same nutritional plan.

Thoughts are welcome!

Congratulations!

Not too difficult with the sleep as part of the full fasting period. Any thoughts to try something longer or maintain the 17hrs multiple times during the week?

What did you learn or eager to try now?

There's a steep learning curve for this type of regimen that can only really truly be hindered through practice. The rule of thumb is if you feel, as if "I can survive without food and stick to a lowered intensity for an exercise regimen." It doesn't matter what anyone tells you or if a plane falls out of the sky, you have met all the conditions to push forward. It's okay to enjoy a bit of healthy snack here and there. Modified fasting is your go-to, because regular fasting can sometimes be unacceptable.

I'm considering doing it a couple times a month.

16-17 hrs seemed okay and I think I will try a longer fast next time. I didn't feel like I was super hungry. Didn't feel tired, either, but then again I didn't exercise while on a fast, either.

Just got some magnesium and calcium supplements that I will add with salt to water and try exercising while fasting next time.

I recently read that if dehydrated and you drink water to recover, that you may deplete the sodium/ salt in your system.
.

What are your thoughts on sodium loss when drinking water?

That's a great start!

I made the mistake of doing a small run and workout my first 2-day fast and started to feel a bit lethargic and low on energy (likely depleting glucose and being hypoglycemic). Started to ease into some lighter body weight workouts (pushups, squats, core work) was a much better option. Running was never more than a half-full mile max.

Good job with the supplements.

OP, What are your thoughts on sodium loss when drinking water?
It's inevitable...

Struggled with it a couple times on smaller fasts (24-48hrs) that's why I started to make the "water soups" to take with me.

Basically just hot water with sodium and other spices.

Also started to do electrolyte supplements with magnesium, potassium, sodium, b-vitamins, etc with a sparkling water and some fresh lemon juice. Wasn't too bad and gave a little taste :)

How do you manage the OMAD? I tried it and could not eat enough calories in one meal. I was struggling to get over 2000 calories. I think the only way I could get enough calories is to resort to eating some lower quality, high calorie foods.

OMAD would probably be difficult for me, too. I eat well over 2000 calories a day.

Great question!

Here is a typical OMAD day for me:
Previous day: last food in my system is usually around 5pm
OMAD day: Typically working 3-4hrs on court in the morning. Around Noon or 1pm I will have a pretty big "lunch" which consists of the following from Sprouts (I'm in GA so its conv:
1 medium sized organic mixed greens container
1-2 packs of organic dried mushrooms
2 big tablespoons organic of Olive Tepanade
6oz of Grassfed Beef Jerky. Jalapeno flavor (No added sugar/flavorings)
8oz of organic coldbrew black coffee
4 total coconut oil dark chocolate keto cups (roughly 4g net carbs)
1 Keto Bar (sometimes)
5-6oz Brie or grassfed cheese
sometimes a bag of organic Kale Chips

This is a substantial meal and very very filling. I don't know exactly how much grams of fats it is but I know it's a lot.

Here are the estimates:
Mixed Greens:
around 5-6g net carbs.... this is a lot of mixed greens but can be consumed in one meal. It's much bigger than a normal restaurant entree salad.
Dried Mushrooms: 3-6 net carbs (depending on eating 1 or 2 packs)
Olive Tepenade: 20g fat, maybe 3-4g carbs
Beef Jerky: 6g fat, 8g net carbs, 48g protein
Coffee: 0g carbs
Keto Cup: 52g fat, 8g net carbs, 8g protein
Cheese: 54g fat, 6g net carbs, 36g protein

Totals
Fat: 132g
Carbs: 33-37g
Protein: 92g protein

**I could easily lower the protein by a bit and add more fats but using some avocade, olive or coconut oil in the salad but I love that Archer farms jerky. It's fantastic in a salad. Carbs as well by having less keto cups and less cheese (depends on the day).**

Obviously this does change. Sometimes I may not have as much cheese or only have 2 keto cups instead of 4, etc. The above is a rough estimate but is definitely a meal that keeps me completely satiated and no problems going 18-22hrs fasting after this meal. The meal in total takes me close to 30-45mins to complete. I take my time because it is a lot especially in one feeding period.

I also make my own "green juice" from very little apple, pear and a lot of kale, spinach, Apple Cider Vinegar, Alfalfa/Wheat/Barley grass powder, other alkaline green powders and lemon juice. This is something I'll have after a meal which gives a little bit of sweetness and a lot of fiber and vegetables. I'll have this one when I'm at home and can have a different type of OMAD meal that would involve some fish with some grilled/baked vegetable mix and some sour cream or cream cheese. Pickled/fermented veggies have provided a great addition in the last month as well.

Hope this answers the question and can give you confidence in OMAD. It took meal a while to get this down to a portion I could consume and not have a desire to eat more at another period of time in the same day. There has been a lot of experimentation but I've come to understand what my body likes, needs and works well with throughout the last few months.

high calorie foods
I eat well over 2000 calories a day.

I found it easiest to add the Oils and cheese to increase calories and not have to stray away from quality. Especially with the grassfed cheese and organic cold-pressed oils. Obviously being careful to not have too much Oils right away, better to get body used to it over the course of a few weeks otherwise you'll be in the bathroom often haha!

Cool thread. I have jumped on the the IF bandwagon.
Currently 3 days a week with 20 hrs on day 1, 24 on day 3 and 20 on day 5. Water and green tea during the fasting.
Regular meals on day 2,4,6 and 7. The day after IF is the best I feel in terms of energy and focus.

All I do for IF is play tennis in the morning and skip eating after if I need to lose weight. Usually around the time after siesta, my body will switch over to ketosis (fat-burning mode) and I won’t be as hungry. I try to make an excellent dinner and refill at dinnertime. Perhaps a bit before evening tennis if playing then. It’s important to deplete your short term energy storages because your body won’t really touch your body fat until then

Also have been IFing for several years (since prepandemic). 16 hours every day (typically eat from noon to 8pm). I eat whatever I want essentially.

Good at maintaining my baseline weight and lowering to it when I gain by going off the IF, say on vacation.
