5 out of the 8 mandatory masters will be 96 player draws over 12 days - It's time bring back best of five finals

This year is the big change in the masters, with Madrid, Rome and Shanghai joining Indian Wells and Miami as 96 player draws to take place over a 12 day period.

My issue with such long durations of masters events is that in the second week, you basically only have 7 best of 3 matches taking place over a period of 5 days, with no more than two matches from the second Wednesday onwards, and a day completely without tennis. Basically it dries up pretty quickly after the first few days of great action.

Now, in one way it is good that players will get a chance to rest, but the winners of today's quarters will play one more best of three before Sunday.

In slams this sort of set up works, the matches are best of five throughout the event, so there is on average significantly a lot more tennis that is played. Clearly 96 player draws is the way we are heading now, but I do feel that we need to now return all 96 player draws to best of five. The reason being it is VERY likely the two players in the final will be seeded in top 32 and will receive a bye in the next event, and essentially not having to play until Friday or Saturday, allowing for a four to five day break, that compounded by the fact the previous event they get plenty of rest in the second week, there is no reason for anyone to be too tired.

The biggest reason why best of five were removed was because of Nadal mainly and then also Federer, with those Rome 2005 and 2006 classic finals. Nadal was too exhausted to start playing again so soon, and so was Federer in 2006, this impacted Hamburg, so they made the changes. But if we are now making Madrid and Rome both the same as sunshine double, it means they have plenty of time of rest and we as fans get a bigger final after a fairly sparse second week relatively to the first. Shanghai should certainly have a best of five, as that is the big match to end the Asian swing, and with 96 players it makes sense.

Keep Canada and Cincinnati as they are for obvious reason, but the rest need a change.

The Indian Wells finals Alcaraz destruction of Medvedev was a little anti-climactic due to the big build up, it needed that best of five format.

Anyways, rant over.

But how does this solve what happened in 2006? I think players need adequate rest after a tournament ends. BO5 in finals should only occur when there's at least 2 weeks before the next BO5 tournament begins. In IW and Miami's case, that can't work because Miami starts a week after IW.

Makes a lot of sense to make atleast last few rounds as BO5.

Just the final should be enough. Keep everything else as best of three, so they don't overplay. But when you are playing such events, think about it, you are playing a best of three every other day almost for the whole duration, plus you will get a bye as a top 32 seed in the first round, so no tennis until Friday or Saturday after a Sunday final.

These are world class athletes, if they cannot handle one best of five in between a few best of three on each side with several days off in between matches, they are not as tough as they should be IMO.

The finals of ALL the other big events ie. WTF, Olympics, Masters, Davis Cup should be Bo5 IMO along with the Slams. That used to be the case and should never have been altered.
The Tokyo final was so disappointing.
Zverev winning in less than an hour and a half against Khachanov felt so empty.
Luckily, in Paris 2024, the men's tennis final will be played in the best of five sets, which will restore the competition to its well-deserved prestige.

No way! I want Carlos to break the slam and masters records. It should stay best of 3.

This is one of the reason why the big 3 could pile up so many majors each.

You make a good case, but I have mixed feelings. Players don't have much of an off-season as is, and many have to sit out portions, nursing injuries.

A compromise of sorts would be to have the Olympics as Best of 5 for the medal rounds and perhaps, also go Bo5 for the (final of the) ATP Finals.

The suggestion is crazy. Today Major League Baseball has implemented changes to shorten the game and they are so confident of a rise in viewership and better quality of sport (due to lesser stress). Tennis will learn it eventually.

BO5 will move to BO3 and not other way. BO5 will become a thing for just finals very soon

Literally no way this is ever happening LOL. BO5 worked when points were shorter. Can’t imagine players being excited about a 5 hour final every other week and having to fly across the world the day after. Tennis is a lot harder on the body than it used to be.

Imagine Djokovic-Alcaraz Cincinnati final in 5 .
On the other hand this match showed that maybe it's better Bo3 considering US Open is coming. But i agree Tour finals Final should be in 5.

Am I the only one who doesn't like how they continue to make the bigger tournaments a bigger deal? Back then the star players also played and cared about the smaller tournies and now with the extensive time each big tourney takes and injury concerns the big players just skip anything below masters or even slams.

Not a good thing for fans living in smaller cities

I think this is all part of a long term master plan.

Federer, Nadal and Djokovic made a mockery of the slam record, for a small period of time it was all good, because the slam race between the three kept things interesting.

But what happens after all three are completely gone? The slam record is so far out of reach that it would take many years at best before someone comes into striking distance.

The whole big titles thing was a nice way first to start seeing all these events as big title events, ATP started to push that. Now we are seeing draws reaching 96 man draws, basically outside the top 32 will need to win seven matches to win the title. They are trying to raise importance in the eyes of the fans, so it feels like the records of the big 3 can be reached.

I won't be surprised if eventually they do return to best of five finals.

Good post. The appropriate solution to the long finals was a period off between each MS event. There's no reason why Madrid and Rome are back to back, nor that Canada and Cincinnati are.

Side note: I oppose byes in all tour events. Draws should be either 64 or 128, not 96. I guess I can deal with 62/126 so that the finalists from the previous event get byes, as happens in some WTA events, but definitely not ranking-based byes. We don't need more regressive taxation on tour.
