Two offensive players going head to head. They've met twice on clay the past 2 years, each time at the French with both matches going to 5-setters. Stan took the win in 11, Tsonga won last year.

2012 Roland Garros
France Clay R16 Tsonga, Jo-Wilfried
6-4, 7-6(6), 3-6, 3-6, 6-4 Stats
2011 Roland Garros
France Clay R32 Wawrinka, Stanislas

Who is going to edge this one this time around? Should hopefully be a cracker of a match!

Wawrinka to win this... hit some sick angles on this backhand today and the win over murray should give him immense confidence.

Has served 3 bread-sticks this tournament so far.

I actually think Wawrinka or Gasquet are the only two left in this tournament that could give Rafa a proper match... Although Nadal has to be the clear favourite.

I doubt the winner of this match will be destroyed by Rafa. They're most likely going to lose, but Rafa didn't really look good today. I hope one of these guys pushes Rafa, so Nads himself can up his game.

True. Wawrinka and Tsonga are playing good, and Nadal has made 21 UE in two sets today. I think he'd still win, but he'll have to play better.

If Tsonga wins he will literally throw the match away against Rafa like he did against Novak in IW. At least Stan will make it competitive for about 1 and a half set. If Stan and Rafa play each other I would expect something like the Delpo-Rafa IW final.

How did you come to that conclusion? I mean Rafa has faced Wawrinka 8 times and he's never been able to take a single set off Nadal.

On the other hand Tsonga has beaten Nadal 3 times out of 10 and has taken a total of 10 sets off Nadal.

There's nothing that suggests Wawrinka will be a tougher match up for Rafa - quite the contrary.

Gasquet would do zip on clay vs Rafa. On grass maybe but on clay... forget.

That might be true in general but on clay specifically, I'd pick Wawrinka as the toughest challenge.

Wawrinka in 3. I mean yes this is one of those matches where you expect quality and competitiveness from both. Could, and should, be a great match.

Stan has been playing well, and sadly tonga can be a head-case. Tonga has all the skills, he just is flaky. It should be possibly the best match of the tournament if both guys show up amped.

Well veroniquem does have a point. That will be the most likely scenario.

It's not about that. It's about contributing somethng to the thread. It's also an arrogant statement.

You know, this match could be the most exciting match of the tournament. I am looking forward to that

hey feather, are you in india??? Will you be following today's matches at monte carlo?

Yeah, Tushar, am in India. Bangalore. I can't watch today's match as I am in office today. I work in TCS, am a software engineer, an SAP XI Consultant.

What about you? What you do? Is that you in the display picture?

Feather has a point, even more so when you consider that V criticizes Federer and his fans for arrogant behaviour, and this comment epitomizes arrogance .Yes, my twin is likely to against the winner of this match, but this thread is about THIS match, if she doesn't care, don't contribute.

Barry Cowan said that Stan is one of the few players that can beat Rafa on clay but that Tsonga could play Rafa 100 times on clay and he would lose 100 times.

I wish Stan take the cup but I know that it's just wishful thinking

Interestingly, Nadal leads Wawrinka 8-0 including 5-0 on hardcourt. Wawrinka hasn't even won a set yet!

Barry Cowan also says that Djokovic is in 'ominous form' at the moment.

Until I saw this match thread made, I thought Stan was playing Nadal next . Damn, I hate it when two players who could otherwise go deep meet at an early stage and destroy each other and then the survivor gets to meet the favorite in the next round only to be beaten to pulp

Don't you think playing 3 sets will just kill the minscule chance that the winner will have in the next round ?

These guys are athletes. It should have no barring if they play 3 sets or not at this stage of a best of 3 tournament, to be honest.
