7 match points. Choke of the century

I would have thought so too if I didn't watch the match! It was so strange I just waited for the match to be over, it felt like Tennys had won already and under those circumstances probably was not easy to close it out! Most of them were on Federer's serve too and Roger actually played great on most of them.

Sandgren played down to Federer's "injured" level instead of maintaining his level. Sandgren started to look like he was injured too by the way he was playing and lost concentration. It was more of a choke than anything. Sometimes, players cannot finish well when they know the other guy is injured. Additionally, add all the pressure he was under and he just couldn't rise to the occasion. Nothing against Fed, but the underdog should have won that match. Felt bad seeing him collapse.

That happened to Stan against Nadal at AO2014.

People keep calling this a massive choke but 6/7 were on Fed's serve and the one Tennys did have he nailed the 1st serve iirc, but Fed just made a couple circus shots in the mid court to save it.

Federer played extremely safe and Sandgren was content to keep rallying with him since it had been a winning pattern all day. Eventually he went for the high risk winners when he realized Fed wouldn't give him anything. And so he hit the tape on some hard shots. It happens.

Didn't Kyrgios save 9 MPs against Gasquet at Wimbledon 2014 and then went on to beat Nadal in the next round?

Nick is so epic!

I remember that actually GOAT drop shot to save one of them in the breaker, best drop shot under pressure ever
Nadal made a drop shot in the Wimbledon 2018 SF to save match point. THAT may be the best drop shot under pression ever. Please don't compare making a drop shot against Djokovic in a Slam with making a drop shot against Kohlschreiber in an ATP 500.

Lol, so many poasters making such a big deal about the #3 player winning 7 points against the #100 player. Impossible he could do it, no? With 6/7 on serve too, like @MeatTornado said.

It's not as if Sandgren couldn't put a return into play. Fedr had some luck there, I agree, but how about Sandgren lucking out that Fedr gifted him 2.5 sets bc he couldn't serve/play anywhere near his normal level with a groin injury? Sandgren didn't choke bc he was in most of those points. Fedr just didn't gift him any of those 7 points like he has been doing for 2.5 sets.

Not worse than 40-15 bro

40-15
went for 1st serve at T, but hit net. Did nothing wrong.
2nd serve nice slice novak hits deep at his feet, and fed hits it wide
clutch return by Nov and Nov won the point, fed did not lose it
How did Fed choke?

40-30
Good 1st serve in the T, and Nov returns in play.
Fed hits to open court, runs forward, and gets passed by perfect shot by Nov.
How did Fed choke?

Kind of reminds me of a story I read about Nicolas Kiefer practicing with Sampras once. Sampras was down in the TB something like 0-6 then won like 8 straight.

Kiefer asked him "is it really that easy for you"?

The top guys are just on another level from the journeymen.

How did Fed choke?

First one fed totally lost it with an unnecessary error. Are you actually blind. Fed got tight and pushed that thing so wide. Second one Fed did nothing wrong and novak was clutch. Still not the best approach though. He def took something off of it.

I only saw the first 3 that were not in the tiebreak. They were on Fed's serve, but Sandgren got those return backs and was in every point

Federer was injured.

Yeah, and on 6 of 7 of those match points Sandgren had his chances, too! Got into rallies. Sometimes was even ahead in the rallies. Just couldn't close it.

Well, that's what happens when you play someone above-level. It takes more than Sandgren's used to to finish the match, and he couldn't do it.

He probably took inspiration from Andy Murray who saved 7 match points against Philipp Kohlschreiber in the quarter-finals of 2017 Dubai. Murray went on to win the title.
I doubt PK choked, he's just fighting outside his weight devision.

How can you have sympathy for someone who as pretty much everything in his career and now is playing for free money, shouldn't this be your golden, platinum, titanium, opportunity of a lifetime to win. I don't think he will ever recover from this

My sympathy was for Sandgren, not Fed. I think you misunderstood what I wrote. Sandgren had him. Should have won. It was a great opportunity. I don't think Fed even felt good about winning that match. You could tell.

They won the exact same number of points in that match.
So, 50% chance of winning the point.
To not win 7 match points was 1 in 128 odds.
Either the most clutch playing of the century, or the biggest choke.
Take your pick, but it was nearly impossible to hold (or not convert) 7 match points.

@Sport Since Rafa ultimately lost the match, it can never be the best drop shot ever under pressure. He prolonged the match, but ultimately, he didn't prevail. But it's still worth another look-- a HUGE shot!

In the first round of the 2004 French Open, Vince Spadea saved 9 match points and erased a 5-1 deficit in the 5th set to beat Florent Serra, 7-5, 1-6, 4-6, 7-6 (9-7), 9-7.
