The Serena blowout drew a final 5.6 TV rating. This means that on a Saturday morning 5.6% of all TV households in the USA were watching WTA tennis. The 5.6 TV rating equates to 7.9 million people. Also impressive, Serena pulled in an 18% share! This means that among all TVs turned on in the USA during this time period. 18% of them decided to watch tennis!

The last time any women’s tennis Grand Slam final earned a higher rating than Saturday’s telecast was in 2001, when Williams’ loss to her sister Venus Williams in the U.S. Open final drew a 6.8 rating on CBS in primetime.

surprised at the rating given the beat down

Not sure what the beat down has to do with it, as the ratings are usually taken in the first half of a program, and also because the brevity of the match meant it didn't really last long enough (over an hour) for viewers to lose interest.

I'm glad the tennis world got some attention, but this was not the match we needed to show everybody. :o

cool. tennis definitely needs more attention. do you have stats for the Fed/Murray match?

On NBC? Maybe about a 100 people  :)

I was watching Federer vs. Del Potro the other day and right in the middle of a huge rally, they cut to an interview with Ryan Lochte.

I was like WTF!

I'm sure BBC had a great numbers as well for Murray's win today.

As noted time and time again, the sport's largest audience shows their true interest.

I wonder what kind of ratings Simon and Tipsy matches generate. Yeah....that was not a serious question.

SW and Maria Sharapova, dream match for NBC, nightmare for Maria.

So I guess it's safe to say the women's final was more fortunate than the Semi final :)

In the USA maybe. In the rest ofthe world ugly, rude, low williamses are not highly appreciated. 90% of the audience all over the world turned on their TVs to watch Sharapova's legs rather than williams and its tennis.

Probably true. This thread is about US-ratings though.

It's like I said in the Olympics Gold vs Slam winner thread.

Olympics: the world watches
Slam: Tennis fans watch

my Facebook was full of : Man Serena dominated that match/ Go Serena/ etc....from people who never post about tennis stuff.

"NBC says the Andy Murray-Roger Federer gold medal match drew 8.2 million viewers."

From SI's tennis twitter handle.

Wow! Almost the same amount of viewers.. I'm surprised it was that close considering Federer vs. Murray was the much more hyped match

I'm surprised it did better than the women's final. Serena is American and Sharapova is attractive so people were guaranteed to tune in. Murray-Federer getting 8.2 million viewers means there are a lot of people interested in seeing tennis itself. Too bad it was such a lousy match on Federer's part.
