a case of tennis elbow?

4HAND

New User
Hey all,
i play a lot of tennis. in the summer holidays i had a two week break from it to rest my body. when i came back, after my first hit, i was experiencing pain in nere my elbow. I've read a bit about tennis elbow on the net and apparently it it caused by incorrect backhand technique. Although the part at which i am pointing only hurts when i hit a forehand.
I am confused as to whether this is tennis elbow or not. Is that the part of the arm that hurts when one has tennis elbow?
thanks so much for your replys.. i am really keen to get back into tennis and my full training program begins next monday.

hey there 4hand!

Which part of the elbow hurts? does it hurt with movements of the wrists, especially extension?

anyway, I had a post long ago about the special tests for tennis elbow:

basically just contract or stretch the muscles that attaches to the lateral epicondyle... (tennis-elbow=lateral epicondylitis)... if it duplicates or aggravates the pain you feel then most probably tennis elbow...

if it hurts only when you hit your forehand, could be a golfer's elbow...

hey thanks for the reply.. i am pointing at the part which hurts. i dont no what the bone is called but thats where it is hurting. and no it doesnt hurt with movements of the wrist.
do you think it could be tennis elbow?? or maybe it is at the end of the tricep where im injured? and suggestions?

did you do any of the tennis elbow tests? which bony part is it? the one near you body? or the outer part of it?
if it's hurting really bad, better see a physician, it's hard to figure out without seeing your arm...

its the one that im pointing to.. the 1 facing my body.. on the left of my elbow (thats my right arm).
Yes i did the tennis elbow tests and they didnt cause any pain.
ps can u c the pcture?

i don't see the picture... but if it's the part closer to your body, then it's probably a golfer's elbow... other's call it the forehand tennis elbow...

When I had TE. I couldn't even pick up a coffee cup without pain. Do some stretching and massage to see if that relieves some of the pain. Rest is best but hard to do.

i spoke to my coach and he says its golfers elbow... should i have a break from the game? (and is so fro how long?) or keep playing but just hitting backhands?

Also.. should i be continually heating my arm with heat cream, say 3-4 times a day?
thanks guys

resting would be best, though you could still continue to play if you really need to, just use an elbow support to compress the tendons, or if you could find somebody to tape your elbow for you, that would be better...

Heating usually is used after inflammation has subsided... after 4-5 days of injury... icing is usually used right after the injury...

since you have an overuse injury, it would be best if you determine if there's an active inflammation of the part... inflammation is determined by 4 signs, redness, swelling, pain and heat... if these four are present (especially HEAT), it'd be best to use icing or cold packs for 15 minutes every three hours...
if there is no active inflammation of the part... you could use any heating pads or packs for 20-30 mins to make the healing process quicker...
