I'm not sure if this has been discussed before, and I'm certainly not trying to create any flame wars, I just want this to be a thoughtful discussion because it's something that I've thought about a lot during the past few days.
The first full tennis match I ever watched on TV was Federer vs Nadal, French open semi 2005 and I immediately started routing for Nadal mainly, I initially thought, because he was younger and I considered him the underdog. Of course, there are other reasons why I like Nadal (though he should seriously play more aggressive if he wants to win more tournaments), but I started to wonder over the years, why do I always route for Nadal over most other players including Federer. I used to play tennis and I was lefty, so I realized it must have been because of that, and the more I think about it, it's obvious to me that I can relate to Nadal more because he's lefty and I can relate to wanting to attack the opponents backhand with high topspin shots, if any of you are lefty, it's a pretty good strategy if you can generate good topspin.
It's strange that it took me so long to realized this, honestly if I was righty, there's a 99% chance I would enjoy Federer's tennis A LOT MORE and might even have gotten bored of Nadal's game over the years. Just wondering if any of you feel a similar way about Federer and Nadal....if you played tennis with the opposite hand, would you derive more enjoyment from watching either of them play? For example, if you were lefty instead of righty, do you think you might enjoy Nadal's tennis more? Strange question I know, but I'm curious to see what people think.
