I think the chances are too low. Last year, 3 of their 4 meetings were in the first half of the season (AO17 final, IW17 R4, Mia17 final) and the 4th was in october, Sha17 final.

This year, first half has gone without a fedal match.

Nadal skipped almost full HC season of the 1st quarter of the year (played only AO)

Federer skipped full clay season, so no fedal match there.

Nadal will not make it to federer on grass as they are top 2 seeds and also the only tournament having both of them is The Wimbledon only...

After the USO, I do not think that there will be a fedal meeting in Indoors season (only 5-6 indoor matches b/w them in these 14 years). Also nadal may skip WTF, and even if he does not, both fed and nad will be in opposite halves, so chance of meeting will be SF/F only (if both are still top 2/3)

So if there is a slight chance of fedal meeting, it seems realistic only at the North-American HardCourt season.
But even there is a very less probability that fed will play canadian masters (as it ruined his chances for Cincinati and Uso last year). So realistically, if there is the next fedal match to happen this year, it will be either at Cincinati or US open.. (Finals if both are still top 2)

Discuss. Give your opinions..

I think they'll meet at least once, during the NA Summer HC swing.

There would probably be a better chance if once of them was ranked below 2 and especially below 4 though.

I think the probability is highest at the WTF, assuming that they both play. Still far from a given though.

Next I put US Open, assuming they both are fit. There will be plenty of other contenders, so most likely than not they won't both make the final. (I'm assuming here that they will still be ranked #1 & #2, although that isn't 100% given.) But best-of-five tennis gives some advantage to the top players.

Then Shanghai. They both met in the final there only last year; both have had good success in Shanghai before. I've put it behind the US Open, since I think there will be more contenders out there, and either can easily lose over BO3.

For all the other tournaments - Wimbledon, Cincy, Paris & Canada (the latter of which Fed will probably skip) - the chances are slim. Nadal hasn't made it past the quarters in any of these since 2013. Of course that doesn't mean he won't this year - I never count him out - but the chances that both he and Fed will make the final are not great. (It gets slightly more likely if one of them does drop out of the top 2, but I wouldn't count on that happening either.)

So my bet is on WTF, if it is going to happen at all.

It would have happened at AO this year had Nadal not been injured. He was 2 sets to 1 up against Cilic and there’s no question wheter he would have beaten Edmug in SF. I think Fed is making the finals of Wimbledon and in the case of Nadal, all depends on the draw. If he somehow gets to the second week, he might get lucky and win two matches in a row to make the F, where he’ll very likely lose to Federer rather easily.

USO meeting would be great, but they’re cursed to not ever meet there.

Probably only the US Open has a shot which is very ironic. The odds of that probably aren't great as it's entirely reasonable to think one or perhaps both will be knocked out before the final, or that one won't be in form.

Federer will probably skip Canada, Nadal probably won't do well or skip Cincy. Shanghai is possible but once again, it's more likely that one or both will lose before the final.

I think the USO is the only chance. Ive a feeling Djokovic will improve even more by the HC swing and will have a say in who meets who.
Also IF Murray gets back at it by then, he could make it interesting.
Fedal wont have it so easy if they both do.

Oh, I meant at Wimbledon. Somehow I forgot to specify the tournament.

I was thinking that, but wasn't sure.
Its a given that Nadal isn't getting near that final. Im really not sure how Fed gets on either.
As much as clay and grass are supposedly a guarantee for Fedal, I personally wasnt confident in both of them winning easily ( Obviously Nadal came through, but he wasnt that great ).
Wimbledon will be interesting for sure.

Last year, with rankings they meet 4 times. This year, I don't think both will reach final at the same time.

Also, why ruin the good thing? Fed has upperhand now and unless its indoor and Fed wins it, I don't want to see it.

I say Nadal skips Wimbledon and possibly won’t play until the USO. Chances of any meeting this year are slim.

Will Federer turn up in good form for the USO?

History says yes, and im more referencing the lead up masters which Nadal has not always done well at or been in top form for. Would love to see a USO meet up though. I see Federer's game having less and less of a gap from the other players. Obviously hes still doing well because he was light years ahead of players outside the 'big 4' or whatever.

I would like as many as we can get before these two great champions retire. A US Open meeting would be on my wishlist, the only one they haven't met at.

I think Rafa will replicate his pre clay form the rest of the year.

So no, no more meetings. Especially since they are likely to be 1&2, or at least in the top 4.

So you think he will be injured until the US Open? That was his pre-clay form this year after the Australian Open.

Injured and general weak form, yes. He still went to the QF in AO, so maybe he does go deep once or twice.

Just a prediction, we have no way of knowing what will really happen.

He went to the QF and got injured there, I wouldn't call that going deep for Rafa's standards. In 2017, he arrived to the AO final and the USO final.

We will see. I'm highly skeptical of his USO chances. Specially if they include a shot clock, I don't know if he could adapt to that circumstance.

This rafa will be fked by decent fedr on HC, as he is not in fed's mind anymore (more than half of rafa's victories are mind games)
