Watching The ClockWednesday, February 16th?

In the continuing saga of my son Trevor, today was a frustrating day of watching the clock. For the last 36 hours the routine has been the same: he eats, he hurts, he hits the Junior DBA’s room, he cries, he rests, we walk the halls of the childrens ward. Repeat.

It’s frustrating to a person such as myself who is extremely impatient by nature and not good with emotions. I expect that once his body works we go home. That was two days ago. Holding strong for the family is wearing thin and I’m feeling guilty for feeling these vain thoughts. Looking back at today all I see is woe-is-me. Concerning me.

Today one of the greatest things that could ever happen to a 10-year-old kid occurred and it was overshadowed from the pain Trevor feels when he excercises the stomach that has sat idle for over two weeks – he was acknowledged by his #1 sports idol. Thanks to our dear friend Yanni, whom I Amy and I first met when she was a student of mine on our first SQL Cruise last year, we were able to make contact with Roger Federer. No less than 3 days later Trevor received a letter from Roger acknowledging he read this blog and saw his forehand in the original post on Trevor’s situation. He also sent Trevor a pair of wristbands, an autographed calendar, autographed desk calendar, and autographed headband. Amy cried when she opened the box for Trevor – he didn’t believe it at first. When asked about his pain by his nurse his reply was “what pain?”

That salve lasted until his next meal.

We’re being told he has a good chance of coming home tomorrow, but his pain complicates the matter. We’re being told it’s normal. He has not run a fever in almost a week. His white blood count is in the 8,000s (normal). He is gaining weight, and is showing good color. His abdomen is no longer sore and his wounds are healing quite well. We should be home tomorrow. Hell, I’d love us to be home now. However, we sit here waiting. Frustrated. Tired. Starting to fracture at the seams.

Hopefully tomorrow brings the healing process home, which is good. Trevor has a lot of thank you cards to write and needs to rest up in a familiar place for the task at hand.

Thank you all again for everything you’ve done for us – from the home-cooked meals by Amy’s co-workers and Trevor’s teacher to the generosity from the SQL community that have never met Trevor and the neighbors and classmates that have. To Mr. Federer and his staff and family who made a little boy forget his pain if even for a little while. We all appreciate the things you’ve done for us and it has (and continues) to carry us through some very difficult times.

It is now mandatory for rich celebrities to be involved in activities like this. This appeases the incompetent unwashed masses who would otherwise take out their anger on successful people by rioting.

If you click on the link you can enlarge and read Roger's letter. It's really sweet:

Dear Trevor,

I just read the information about your situation on your dad's blog. It sounds like you're getting better day by day and that you've been through a rough few months. It sounds like you've been really strong, and I'm sure once you get back on the tennis court these tough times will help you persevere. I also noticed on your dad's blog a photo of you hitting a forehand. That must be a big shot for you, so keep working on it.

I am currently in Dubai training and getting ready to play a tournament next week, but I've asked my agent to send you a couple of gifts, which you should receive in the coming days.

Get better and keep fighting!

Sincerely,

Roger Federer

Praying for your son.
Nice that Rog is such a mensch.
Forgive me, but what's ailing your son? I hope he feels better each day.

God bless you and your family.

Err, its a nice story, but its not Mandy's son. Its merely a nice story that tugged on her heartstrings.

No, i have to agree with T1000 :sarcasm: :D

I thought sureshs is a GTOAT contender but I have to change my mind.
He´s not a GTOAT contender anymore.
No I think he´s as wise as the Dalai Lama.
I think JoelDaliLama would go to 5 sets against him and possibly take him on this surface.

Rafa sent that little boy a video message, two signed caps and the raquet that he used in the RG 2008 final.

And this is a cute story

Rafa, the hero

By Audrey Riou – Thursday, 15th April, 2010, welovetennis.fr

A little story garnered from the outskirts of the courts by a person in charge of the dressing rooms after a verbal joust of “Are you Nadal or Federer?”.
“I adore Federer, his game, his class, but I have to admit that Nadal is a really nice guy. I remember last year, it was raining heavily. A little boy and his mother were waiting for Rafael to start training. Given the weather, I told them that it was a waste of time because he was going to train much later when the good weather would reappear. Three hours later, those two were still there, soaked despite their umbrella. The sun came back and Nadal arrives to hit a couple of balls. Touched by the perseverance of the kid, I allow myself to tell Nadal that there was this little guy who waited for three hours in the rain. I was amazed by his reaction: “You’re kidding?”, he asked me before taking the child by the hand to go train with him for at least 20 minutes. The little fellow left packed with all sorts of gifts personally signed by his idol. He’s the only player who is capable of doing such a thing, I think.

They are both good stories...>Rafa is really good with kids...being a kid himself! Roger is a classy man who knows what do to do at the right time!

Roger is so arrogant. Obviously he doens't give a rat's @$$ about the kid; I mean, he didn't send him a new Mercedes or so much as a racket, and he gets those for FREE! Seriously, he is just trying to get PR.

Congrats on the kid getting better, to the family (I know it isn't Mandy's), God Bless them

Not stupid, preemptive action to preclude a general attack on the name of Roger Federer and a good person by the jealous and despotic forces of the Nadrons.

Nice story, mandy. We are all so blessed to be alive in the same century as Roger.

We are not worthy, as @cucio would say.

Takes large huevos to proudly drop Manilow lyrics. Masterpiece post indeed! Better than the actual song, which ended up influencing a ton of ballads and even some early 90s complaint rock.

And the hairdo on Manilow is, well, it's the next big thing for the American hipster. Epic ironic hair.
