A question to Nadal and Djokovic fans.

To Nadal fans:
When did you think/believe that Nadal would surpass Federer's slam tally? Or that, there was a high probability, that Nadal would surpass his slam count?

To Djokovic fans:
Since, when have you been under the belief, that Novak will surpass Federer's 17? Or, that it is the most likely outcome?

Any particular year, tournament, event, etc? Or, when both had achieved a specific no. of slams? State for both Nadal and Djokovic.

The ************* has always maintained that it is a matter of time, before the Nadal overtakes Federer in the Majors count, but I would say that their hopes were particularly high at the end of 2013.

Nadal - USopen 2013 win

Djokovic - nope, realistically no chance of getting 17 majors. It's good to dream though. Dreams don't come true. First of all I didn't even think of Novak reaching 11 slams in his life. Any win after RG is considered a bonus for all the opportunities he wasted between 2012-2014

To be honest: I never did, as I'm a long-time watcher of the sport, and know all too well that things may chance very quickly.
Even more, I've always *cringed* at the claims of "Nadal will surely overtake Fed's GS record" and the like.
This sort of talk should not even be uttered unless 16 GS titles are already in the bag.

For the record: these claims were just as idiotic as those coming from hard-core Fed zealots, who also apparently thought he'd easily rack up 20 GS titles.

As I'm not a fan of Djok's, I should refrain from answering your second question, but in all, I'll give it a try - pretty much the same thing.
Highly unlikely. Not impossible though.

Are you mixing together the pre- and post- 2008 slams or keeping separate accounts?

Nadal surpassed Federer in greatness a while ago.
Djokovic is 1 RG away.
Federer's slam count is immaterial

I thought it was too big a number as well! Even with the weak competition, it's still a difficult road to hoe! Nole's been almost unbeatable of late, but 7 more majors in the next 3 years can be trying IMO! The older you get, the more your confidence fails you! Lendl was still physically able after 30, but his confidence had to slump with all that was coming at him from Becker, Edberg, Sampras, and so many others! He held them off as long as he could, but those last couple years were pretty much a waste with only smaller events and some Masters going into his win column! ;-)

Surpassing Fed's 17 is extremely unlikely. Djoko wasted too many years choking away Slams (esp. 2012-2014)

^^^ pretty much this. Only the naive Djoker fans talk of the inevitability of Djoker getting 17. The reality is it is VERY unlikely. 6 more slams is a TON. He probably missed his window in 2012-14. Needed to snag 3 more slams during those years.

You will never know if Djokovic is going to surpass Fed or not. But I think fans started to believe he CAN after epic run of 2015 till RG and winning Wimby after that disappointment of RG. That's where GOAT THEORIST McEnroe claimed Djokovic is top 5 men's player of all time. So yeah, since then.

Novak needs another seven to get the record.

He's been racking them up so far, and I know past success doesn't guarantee future success, but with no-one seemingly in his way at the moment, how can one justify saying that he can't at least get close?

Unless the wheels come off overnight (which is the antithesis of Novak's entire schtick), he's getting 3-4 more practically guaranteed as far as I'm concerned.
Even after his peak he'll probably hang around Federer-style for a while to get a couple more, so at least 3-4 more, in total, from now, just seems like common sense.

Never really was a priority for me, always wanted nadal to get the golden career slam which he had achieved by end of 2010.

I was happy with his lot, as I suspect nadal was hence why he wrote a book which seemed bizarre timing unless he considered tennis no longer a priority which does appear the case as he has obviously set up lots of projects and other things since 2010.

Similarly for Djokovic, surpassing federer is irrelevant. He needs the golden career slam. If he gets it then he can retire as well, nothing left to achieve.

Federers only blemish is his record against both nadal and Djokovic. A losing record against one is fine, but both? Can't be ignored.

Right now Djokovic got a lot of work to do and he is doing great but this amazing run is shortening his career as well.

After US Open 2015.

For Nadal, if I can remember right, I think it was after his incredible 2010. Although he was at 9 and Fed at 16, many predicted Rafa's dominance and Roger's slump. He was just 24 then.

At the Australian Open 2014, I was convinced Nadal would get his 14th and the double career slam. Confidence high, he would go to Roland Garros and get number 15. From there, equaling 17 at least seemed inevitable. I would have expected him to equal 17 by the end of 2016. He was healthy and although he was a comfortably a step or two slower than his younger days, he was playing great tennis on hard and clay.

How the mighty fall eh...
