A reminder of what a peak Nadal on Chatrier actually looks like

Because I am suddenly a Nostalgic, Fed agenda driven guy who makes this forum unreadable.

Let's start shall we?

This is 2012 Nadal vs Djokovic. Look at that FH and that command from the baseline.Look at his feets. If you don't see a difference to current Nadal in the first point itself then you are blind.

This is 2013 RG SF, Nadal had 22 winners in 5thn set, his FH went to a level that is beyond anyone I have seen.

This is Nadal in 2007 final , he refused to get broken here. Look at him wrestling rally control away from Federer on a dime

This is 2008 Nadal against Verdasco, look at his speed, his depth and his defence.

Then there is 2010 F, If you actually watch it you notice how dangerously Nadal's FH is bouncing off the court AND he has depth too. It's near impossible for Soderling to hit through him, it's nigh impossible to maintain his court position due to Nadal's FH. He is taking big swings, but half the ball are at his head level.

(TTW not letting me link it for exceeding 5 media links)

I can keep posting these. But the point is, those who keep claiming that Today's tennis is better actually go back to watch ? Or had they watched live in the first place?

I started to watch tennis on youtube first. From the time I didn't know any rule of tennis, just to learn the sport. I still do that. Yet something that I watched just today becomes my nostalgia and I become agenda driven.

I think 2012 is arguably his best ever French Open.. Would have steamrolled a peak Djokovic who had won his last 3 slams in straights if the conditions hadn't become damp

That’s peak grindal, not overall Nadal.
Hmm still one of his "best" matches at RG, in terms of entertainment. One of my favorite matches, though I only have the 3rd and 4th set with me.

Peak grindal is no joke either. Don't think anyone other than himself beats him.

Nadal was much better in 2012 than in 2006. He was probably best of all in 2008. (This is discussing just Roland Garros).
I will never agree to the first part. 2012 isn't nowhere near the best Nadal on clay I've seen, I don't care about statistics. I'm talking about match play and overall quality.

Nadal 2008 was THE best. Much better than 2010 (that was his last true peak on clay). I love '08 and '05 (his pure speed in 2005 is leaps and bounds ahead of anything post-2010).

Clay is a grinders surface.

I'm also talking about match play and quality. In my view, both 2005 and 2006 were some way off his best game-wise. He was still raw and incomplete. Yes, he was very fast indeed, but that's less important. 2008 was indeed better than 2012, but I think 2012 was his second best - yes, better than 2010, too, albeit less obviously than compared to 2006. Perhaps 2007 and 2012 were equal second. 2007 was a clear step up from 2006. Anyway, this is all based on an eye test and pretty unprovable, but that's my view for what it's worth.

2007 F in last two sets was incredible. 2005-06 were a little green but better than 2018,on level with 2011,19.

I agree. What's weird to me is that I still expect Rafa to play as he did in 2008-2010 and when he doesn't, it's sort of stunning. But he's still better than anyone else on Chatrier, even in his declined state.
that reflects more on the current crop of pathetic youngsters. worst generation

Yes, peak Nadal was so good that it doesn't even look real. It is obvious to all normal tennis fans that current Nadal is even close to his 2005-2013 versions.

Peak PC-RG Nadal was so good it was certainly a different player and almost a different sport, also playing against peak Federer/Djokovic during those times, when they were absurdly better as well

12 and 13 were nowhere NEAR Peak Nadal. If you want a glimpse of that, should've posted that epic match against Mathieu in 2006.
You betta preach. Just because he beat djokovic 12-13 doesn’t mean he was peak claydal. Nadal was at his best on clay when he was at his physical best 2005-2008. The Mathieu match was crazy. That day, with the help of the crowd, Mathieu played better than anyone Rafa had played at RG bar Federer.
