About Venus and Serena in 2021.....

Referring to Serena's child as a "fashion accessory." There is no such think as going too low for you and your ilk, and are in no place to judge anyone.
"ilk"? Please expand.

PS it's the Internet, if we can't "judge" it's going to be a lonely place ;)

Your attempt to joke your way out of despicable posts never works. You targeted Serena's child. Only the first step for those who hate Serena to that degree.

The Williams sisters have earned every bit of their success on the courts and I won't argue with their greatness as competitors. I'm honestly stunned that Venus has quietly sustained her level and kept her competitive fires burning year after year and is still going so strong.

That being said, I can't for one second look upon Serena as any sort of ambassador of the game. She's been a self-involved diva for most of her years as a pro and her conduct cost her both the US Open semifinal vs Kim Clijsters in '09 and also the US Open final against Naomi Osaka in '18.

The sport needs ambassadors who respect it enough to meet it standards, not disregard them and throw tantrums on its biggest stages. Serena has been a dominant player, but when it comes to looking for somebody to emulate, I'll look elsewhere.
Not sure why you went off on a tangent about Serena when I was clearly talking about Venus post-retirement..

Certainly can't knock their resumes or contribution to the sport

also why does every williams thread end up like this, like without even seeking to enter the argument, how do you same people have the energy and will to have literally the same back and forth every time. sigh

I'd rather any celebrity or sports star NOT put their young children in any spotlight. Let them enjoy a normal life with privacy until they're a teenager.
Thats certainly true. Respect for Djok and how he kept his kids' face out of the pictures

Oops - I read your idea in the light that you were mostly making observations about Serena with only a quick aside about Venus. I took that final point as your Serena wrap-up, but I get what you're saying there.

Sorry. Hope I didn't wreck your day. I actually agree with you there (y)

Apparently I'm beyond done with all the rhetoric elevating Serena into something she's not. I actually wish that the writers and talking heads would treat her with the same wavelength as Venus these days. Serena is still catching the "greatest ever" labels and any loss turns into an exercise in excuse making. But Venus is still going. Everybody knows that she's beyond her best years, but at this point, watching her play one more match is just bonus points for us before she retires.

Agree with almost everything, Venus for the better part of a couple of years has just been an opponent. She’s had a couple miracle runs but her aura is long gone.
The women’s tour needs to focus on the players who truly support the tour and the growth of the tour. Do you think Serena cares a lick about the tour? She shows up to Grand Slams and thats about it. The occasional tour events she shows up for she more often than not withdraws.

Agree. Never got the impression that she wanted to be generous and promote the WTA or the game in general.

I try to keep my griping-at-Serena impulse in check - not always successful - but I can't get past the absurd degree of media gushing. They won't let her age gracefully, but they also gloss over her behavior instead of calling it what it is. Everybody has a right to their opinions, but I honestly can't think of a more toxic player in the WTA... how 'bout ever.

I know that I'm guilty of piling on here and there, but I also try to chime in on the constant overdrive of Serena selling (Excessive Serena Promotional Network) we've had to endure for much too long now. I'm a happy tennis nerd, but the media machine pushes only a couple of tennis personalities all the time, while ignoring so much of the other stuff that's going on. It happens when Tiger plays some golf nowadays, too.

So many mildly interesting participants out there in the ATP and WTA. I'd love to see some of them without my curiosity being held hostage. Gotta sign up for TC Plus or ESPN 3 if you don't want to choke on more of the same every time a major is underway.

I want to give the WTA it's due, but too much of the lens is bent toward Serena... and I do mean bent.

I miss Serena.
I am more a Venus fan but I got used to her not being around much.
But I’ve loved watching Serena fight tooth and nail for slam 24. And her losing always has a heart wrenching reality to it. Inspiring she just keeps on at it.

I refuse to watch that and relive the disappointments. Lol

A mess! Venus should and could have won so much more. It's a shame her peak got cut off by 02 Serena which is like the deadliest peak ever :sneaky: Venus made 6 out of 7 slam finals from 01-03, and only won 2 bc of Serena

Venus could have beaten Serena in a few of those matches but she didn't have the heart to do it. That's what saddens me thinking back to those days...2002 RG and 2003 AO are matches Venus should never have lost.

Yep, busy being a big sister, Serena just had that killer instinct, and Venus probably (rightfully at that time) thought they were so much better than the field that she would have plenty of time to rack up more slams with ease.

Yea she had the thought process of "oh well, I'll have more chances so it's not that big of a deal" and Serena's was "I want it all and I want it now!".

I don't think either of them will win another tournament, especially venus but Serena too.

But of course they still will make loads of money in advertisement deals

Unpopular opinion but Serena put too much pressure on 24 and messed it up. She looked so good at this year AO and collapsed against Osaka. Still mighty impressive that she reached 4 slam finals and 2 semies at the tail end of her career post pregnancy.
