Wow good fight from the Heels to win.

MikeJ I for some reason had you pinned as a Virginia fan
nah, just a lot of positive comments in UVA tennis's direction b/c i respect the remarkable things they're accomplishing nowadays

per the UNC match:

quite disappointing to lose to a team with such little depth (seems like they basically sacrifice #6 to any good teams)...but their guys really seem to have come to play today (unlike reid)

it was encouraging, however, to see the freshmen in the middle of the lineup really step up (especially mengel after his 1-5 hole)

hernandez is one hell of a player - i think he's really getting better, and he was damn good when he came to UNC...i've seen the way cunha fights in third sets, and stealing the deciding match from him is no easy task

it helps when you have davis cup experience and this kind of forehand: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=swpAN-AneiM

looks like duke better settle in for a seeding in the range of 12-16 i would guess

i was at the UNC-duke match today....what a roller-coaster ride! Props to Brennan and Cameron for pulling off the doubles point - when I arrived, the score was 5-5. I saw the break - didn't realize UNC had squandered a 5-1 lead.

was absolutely shocked at how poorly Reid Carleton played. he was simply never in the match.

really disappointed that Hardy was serving for the first set at 5-1, and lost 7-5. he was toast at that point. didn't watch either of the bloodbaths at #4 or #6.

Jose and Cunha started off sluggishly, but both really picked up their games as the first set progressed. Huge props to Jose for pulling out a huge victory to preserve the win for the Heels. when duke took the 3-2 lead, I felt certain that Parker and Jose would split matches, at best.

So, congrats to Jose and William, and the others for a big win!

Today's matches:

Virginia 7, Clemson 0: Eevn if UVA plays a weak line-up I can't see a win for Clemson.

Georgia Tech 6, Virginia Tech 1

Duke 7, FSU 0: FSU is not deep and their top 2 strength is overwhelmed by Duke's top 2. Can Mirzadeh beat Cunha? Perhaps but I don't see Cunha losing again

NC State 4, Maryland 3: Pulgar and Hogdson carry the day

Wake 7, BC 0

Miami vs UNC: Match of the day. UNc is coming off of a big win. They are favored in doubles and 1 and 2. Miami is a deep team and has advantage at 5 and 6. It will come down to 3 and 4. Split the two. UNC 4-3

UNc up 3-2 now. With Ahari about so slam the door.

UVA up 5-1. Galloway gets a massive win over Singh. Yannick Maden making a comeback vs Jenkins.

Virginia Tech's live scoring service is dead

Cunha beats Mirzadeh 6-4 6-2 to confirm a 4-1 win for Duke. (Saba beaten by Smith)

UVA dominated doubles. On singles, Singh DF'd a match point in the match tiebreaker. Jenkins's athleticism was evident, and carried the match at the close of the second set (last to finish). Shabaz rolled out easily, then tightened a bit, but closed. D

I was happy with our effort vs UVA. It's a lot better than we did last year at home vs UVA. Only dissapointed in the decision not to play D.Maden at #6 singles and slightly dissapointed in Meza's play.

GT edged VT 4-3. Gomez beat Somen to keep his undefeated ACC record in tact.

Duke beat FSU 4-3. FSU surprisingly won at 5 and 6.

Maryland edged NC State 4-3. Terps made had big rallies on 5 and 6 to secure the gutsy win. Critical win for the Terps because they are a bubble NCAA tourney team

UNC beat Miami 5-2. Dissapointing effort from the U in singles. I thought for sure Miami would dominate at the lower part of the line-up as deoth is UNC's weakness and Miami's strength

Virginia beats Georgia Tech 6-1. Shane getting roped was a surprise, but a fairly straight-forward win for the Cavs. Shabaz gave Gomez his first ACC loss of the year 6-3 6-4.

Today:

Clemson at Virginia Tech: Absolutely must win for Clemson. It's possible, but its at Virginia Tech who apparently have slow courts. Hopefully live scores will be available but the VT website has whiffed on those recently. Yannick Maden can beat Daciek at 2, Galloway is playing well and can win at 3. Somen will beat DiFazio. And if we play the right people we have chances at 5,6 and doubles.

Wake at Maryland: Maryland spent to much energy in the comeback win over NC State.

Miami at Duke: 6-1 Duke. Wietoska to lose at 5

FSU at UNC: Mirzadeh vs Hernandez will be good. UNC is too strong for FSU.

I can't believe this. Looking like another 4-3 loss for Clemson to a team ranked above them.

and its over Rigsby blows a set and a break lead and falls aprt as we lose 4-3. This is so frustrating. We will now slip into the low 60s despite being a much better team than that. We have now lost to UNC,Miami,VT and FSU by 4-3 counts. All were very close matches that came down the final two matches. Had we won just one of those our ranking would be much better. This would have given us so much momentum heading into the ACC tournament, now the team is probably just depressed as hell.

We won the doubles point (hey look whaddya know, Bolona/D.Maden won again at #3 doubles). Yannick took care of Daciek easily as expected. Meza and Galloway laid massive eggs, DiFazio blew a lead in the 1st set and then was beaten by the better play. Hilsman battled to win at 6 and Rigsby up 6-4 4-3, loses 4-6 7-5 6-2. Awful

Championships start Thursday!!! Who ya got

...in the women's bracket is the rest of that sentence. I don't think they would take bets in Vegas on the men's tournament.

Anyway, just for giggle, here's how I see the men's bracket playing out:

Thursday winners:
Florida State (could be a good one)
Georgia Tech (snore)
Wake Forest
Virginia Tech

Quarterfinal winners:
Virginia over FSU (durrr)
Georgia Tech over Miami (I like the fight the Jackets showed this weekend, I'm not as high on Miami)
UNC over Wake (Wake could pull a win off, though.)
Duke over Virginia Tech (Hokies don't have the top line firepower to match the Blue Devils)

Semis:
Virginia over Georgia Tech (Hoos won 6-1 this weekend while holding out Courtney)
Duke over UNC (I don't think the Tar Heels can beat Duke a second time)

Final:
Virginia over Duke (I expect this to be closer than it was in the regular season, unless all of Virginia's top players are healthy.)

1st round:

Florida State def Maryland 4-3.Very close during the season and will be again. Mirzadeh and Bowles are too strong.

GT over BC 4-0

Wake Forest over Clemson 4-2: Bad draw for Clemson. For some reason we don't match up well with wake. I would have much prefered another crack at FSU or VT or Maryland.

VT over NC State 4-3: NC State won during the season, but VT will turn it around this time.

If I recall, the ACC is absolutely woeful in covering this event, so you're at the mercy of the participating schools' SIDs.

I think there will be at least one competent SID for each match. The incompetent ones are Clemson, BC, sometimes Wake, sometimes Virginia Tech and Maryland.

will any of you be in Cary this weekend? i'll be working the tourney Fri-Sun. I'll ask about internet coverage, and pass along any info I hear.

Looks like Clemson's outrageously incompetent men's tennis SID is not doing livge scoring. Luckily is looks like Wake will do it.

Rain. Great this will take all day now

Clemson vs Wake starting. i am happy with the line-up we submitted. only 1 match is the same from our meeting in the season when we lost to Wake 6-1.

Miami dominated. Keep in mind that GT has been playing the last couple weeks without their ordinary #2 Spir.
Yeah..I'm aware :) I was there at the match when he injured himself against UNC. But when they faced UVA in the last match of the regular season, Spir wasn't in the lineup either. If Spir is in the lineup, I'll give GT a very slight chance for the upset but what has to happen is: GT has to take the doubles, Gomez has to reverse the result he had against Shabaz, and GT has to dominate at the 4, 5 and 6 spots. Otherwise, UVA's in the final match.

I am trying to remember when we were dominated at 4-5-6 singles this year. Refresh my memory. :)

I wouldn't know since I haven't paid any attention to the individual match details involving UVA this year. But you know...there's always room for an upset and what I've mapped out is what would have to happen. Yes..it's a lot and unlikely.

The blueprint to beating UVA is pretty simple:

1) Win the doubles point.
2) Have a top gun that can beat Shabaz.
3) Win at #6.
4) Cross your fingers, and hope one of the 3, 4 and 5 players for UVA has a bad day.

No team has managed to get three points off of Virginia yet.

Keep in mind that while GT may have been missing Spir, UVA was missing Drew Courtney, who is ranked higher than Spir, and is Shabaz's doubles partner.

Pretty impressive win for UVA today (over GT).

I watched the #1 Doubles and the #4 Singles match. Good stuff!

Florida State beat Duke in the women's semi yesterday. They are on a serious roll. UNC can't be too comfortable going in to today's final.

See the results for yourself.

The match was closer than the score indicates, but this is Virginia's 76th consecutive ACC victory. As I said before the tournament started, Vegas would not have taken bets on this event, because Virginia would have been such an overwhelming favorite. It's just a statement of fact. Virginia's the lone ACC program to have broken through to "national power" status, and the other programs haven't quite caught up yet. The other ACC fans will back me up on this. It's just the reality of the situation.

yes i saw the result and clearly you guys are the favorites in the entire NCAA. i'm an ACC fan and i have no reason to dislike UVA and their fans. almost 100% of the time you guys are very knowledgeable and humble about you're victories but i felt like that other post was out of character

Men's Champions are crowned...yawn. Virginia takes its 5th consecutive title with a 4-0 victory over Duke.
congrats guys, yeah not too much of a surprise

glad to see the duke guys fought pretty well, especially at the bottom half of the lineup...shabaz should take some confidence into NCAAs after finally getting the best of cunha

Duke had the UVA fans a bit concerned, I'll admit. There was that one point where Duke had won 2 of the first sets, and it looked like Carleton might take the first in his match. 3-3 split on first sets, with one being Shabaz over Cunha was NOT ideal, given that Shabaz has several matches against Cunha where he took the first and lost the next two sets.

Domijan pulling out the first set tiebreaker, and Shabaz jumping all over Cunha in the second sealed the deal. But as anyone can see from the LiveStats, the match could easily have ended 4-3 if it had been played out.

My "yawn" comment is more in contrasting the ACC Men's Tournament with the SEC tournament or the ACC women's tournament, which have had upsets and a lot of excitement. Not many tense moments in the men's side.

Yeah the ACC tournament was pretty dull. Blowouts galore. Only VT/NC State was a good match
only if you're looking at the final score...the reality is that many of the matches were damn close - even the matches that ended up 4-0.

Wake Forest guys lost 4-1 to UNC on Friday, but the match was very much WFs to win until that 4th point was taken.

Same on the womens side - UNC beat GT on Friday 4-1, but was losing the final two matches.

Today, the UNC women's team won 7-6 in third set for the 7th point. Heels were up 3-1, and looked to be rolling.

Don't take the scores you saw posted at face value - there were a lot of intense, close matches this weekend, regardless of the final score.

Unless you want to make the argument that every match is competitive, they were bigger blowouts than the regular season. Wake had a shot if they had won any of the 3 tiebreaks, but they didn't and matches 5 and 6 didn't even start.

well, there was some excitement on the women's side. Saturdays semis started with Duke vs FSU caming down to a single court. Granted, they were moon balling on that court (I couldn't believe what I was seeing, kinda like high grade girls 14s).Even if the style tennis was not what you would pay to see, the drama was real (including a chair over rule on court 2 of what would have been match point for Duke on court 2 in a 3rd set tiebreaker)FSU went on to win the tiebraker on 2 and then closed out on 3.
Then Miami/UNC had real ebbs and flows. On court 4, after losing the 1st set 6 0, Lauren McHale came back to win in three and was the first court to finish !. Other courts where UNC started by getting the 1st set, saw the same sort of turnarounds . Eventually it's approaching 10pm, the score is tied at 3 all and court 3 is at 4 all. UNC wins 6 4 taking that matcht.
The finals had the same unpredictable feel to them, and again it came down to court three with FSU looking to close it out after getting up a break. But another momentum swing and the next thing you know they are playing a seven point tiebreaker for the ACC championship.
I thought it was fun to watch.
