all three Tar Heel women seniors - Sara Daavettila, Lexi Graham and Makenna Jones have committed to returning for the 2020-2021 season. Coach Kalbas has accepted the three seniors plus the three incoming frosh. With a roster of 13, Coach will have a challenge keeping all of the players content. I imagine this is a nice problem for him!

But not a nice problem for some of the players

Should never have been allowed, creates more problems than it solves

Life is full of lost opportunities - this whole NCAA deal of redshirts so you don’t lose seasons while injured / while on the bench - and now an additional season for a partially completed Covid season...if you ask me it’s misguided, and not how life works after college athletics

Notre Dame lost to Ball State
I saw that and looked up the results. It was a doubleheader. ND took the first match 6-1 playing guys in UTR ranking #2,3,5,8,9,11. In the 2nd match, ND played UTR ranked #1,7, 8, 10, 11,12 . In the 2nd match the top 2 lines and line 6 for ND beat Ball State but their bench level players playing 3-5 lost to Ball State, and ND lost dubs. Guess ND after the 1st match thought they could give their lower bench a shot to play. What is most surprising to me is that a dubs pair led by Richard Ciamarra lost to Ball State. ND always has a big roster; usually bench guys play a lot at fall invites. Without a fall season, coaches may try to find dual matches for those players at non-conference matches. I think it speaks a lot for ND coaches to try and give the guys a shot. Since it backfired for ND to play mostly bench guys in the 2nd match, they may not do it again. Maybe next time at least keep 3 regular line up guys in... Most of the lost singles matches were between opponents with close UTRs-however, Ball state had 2 guys that beat guys 1.0+ higher. ND played a couple of guys with UTR 11 or lower. ND's team UTR ranges from 10.95-13.84. Too bad for you ND won't play that lineup at Clemson... It looks like Clemson's top players are freshmen-could be another tough year for Clemson with the team improving each year as the young guys gain experience. Notre Dame will probably finish in the middle of the pack this year. Hope GT beats them. GT played fairly well vs UGA on MLK day-winning 3 lines of dubs and 2 of top 6 singles lines including Andres Martin beating Trent Bryde at #1.

Let's take a look at the ACC late in the year:

32 Georgia Tech 4-5
35 Virginia Tech 5-6
38 Duke 4-4
42 Notre Dame 4-4
46 Miami 2-4
Louisville 2-6
Florida State 1-7
Clemson 1-8
Boston College 0-8

What's happening to UNC? The team lost to Wake and barely beat Miami-a team ranked 9ish in ACC. Blumberg didnt play vs Miami. Is he injured again? Will VA win the ACC tourney? Over the last couple years, there have been high expectations for UNC, but they just dont live up to them. I have been a fan of Blumberg since he was runnerup in NCAA singles in 2017 as a freshman, but it seems injuries have prevented him from reaching his potential. Didnt he have surgery a year or two ago? When he is playing his A game, he reminds me of Fed in that he makes it look so graceful and easy.

Without a healthy Blumberg and Dinky, the Heels are little more than a paper tiger. The guys just don't have the depth to contend at the very top. Thank goodness we won the Indoors this year.

Btw, the Miami match wasn't as close as the final score. Heels were up 4-0

How long is Blumberg out? I see he isnt playing vs Wake today. Is he expected back for NCAAs?
Close match between Wake and UNC-what happened with Nava default?

Nava was defaulted for violating the bathroom break rule.
That defaults a match? Seems like it would be more a game vs match penalty unless it was a repeat offense....or an extremely long break. I know in juniors some players would take "bathroom breaks" to break the momentum of an opponent on a streak or when their opponent was ready to serve for the match but I havent heard about this in college.

That's what the WF Twitter and UNC Insta account both said. Nava posted on his Instagram story that he didn't know the rule. Again an instance where having the ACC tournament streamed would have been very nice.

There was more explanation on the issue on collegetennisranks twitter: "Word is that Nava took his extended bathroom break but instead of going to the bathroom went to a room with A/C and fans to cool off. Was a discussion with head ref after and was declared an illegal use of bathroom break and hence the default."

I didnt attend the ACC Champs and of course they had no live video, so pathetic, but from my UVa buddies (congrats BTW) I found out why Nava got defaulted.
Nava took his 5 minute bathroom break after the 2nd set, one of the UNC players, Anuj Watnae followed him and Nava stopped at the trainers tent to get some treatment, the Unc kid called an official and the head referee said he could do that and defaulted him since he stopped at the trainers tent.....if that is true that is very harsh officials ruling

apparently nava was also cramping at the end of the second set. wake's coach spent several minutes yelling at assistant coach tripp phillips, as well as blumberg (who was on court as a coach since he wasn't playing) and telling them they shouldn't have taken the default even though it's the rule. 100% positive wake would have done the same thing if the roles were reversed.

pretty clear cut rule in ITA book now. Default might be harsh but it is minimum a code and players/coaches should know the rule

Makes perfect sense I can just picture it now, Serena vs Naomi US Open finals. Serena loses a tough first set 8-6 in the breaker, uses her bathroom break........she takes 14 minutes because, well shes Serena, but no problem there. However, instead of going to the bathroom she grabs a towel and some food and changes her socks and shoes. And then there it is, the official comes out and says game set match, Serena you are defaulted, 20'000 people this is over, CBS this is over, Serena never actually went to the bathroom..........its ok for her to threaten officials but if she doesn't go to the bathroom on bathroom break shes defaulted.

Speaking of Blumberg why didn't he play singles in the ACC final. You'd think after 5 years of college tennis and winning 0 ACC titles, thats right 0 titles you'd at;east want to try. It's crazy how good Carolina is in the regular season and how bad they are in the post season. Almost like the Gators of the SEC, except worse with the talent they have had.

4* - was not held last year.

Of the 4, 2 were the eventual NCCA champion. '17 UVA and '18 Wake... while good, not good enough.

Injuries, they almost won (3-4) with their #1 and #2 not playing in the final this year, that's absurd. They would have won last year if healthy.

I guess they could have pulled a USC from last year's indoors final and played Blum at 1 to only tank/ retire after starting the match... kinda what USC did with Holt.

I believe both Rinky and Blum were nursing injuries. At the end of the day I am sure they would take a shot at winning a national championship over being ACC champs all day.

If you say so. Hard to imagine being as good as that team has been for the last 5 years and never winning 1 ACC title. Certainly a NCAA title would top that, but they have work to do, outdoors is very different then indoors and I wouldn't call UNC the toughest or fittest team I've ever seen, guess we'll see in 3 weeks. I'd put my Gators up against them in Orlando all day, and we are also not great in the post season.

I do love the "would have won if healthy" part. Sure, I'll just take your word for it then, especially since they have won 0, that's right 0, ACC titles in the last 20 plus years.

Also, first time seeing Duke play in person in years, and they’re so bad

hard to believe how far they’ve fallen since the days of 1) king / yanni 2) ludo / stokke / atas / prod and 3) cunha / carleton - there’s literally only one player out there on court today that looks like he would’ve been even on the roster of any of those teams, the rest don’t belong at high level D1 tennis, and looks like USF may send them packing, else they’re in for destruction tomorrow

so hard to understand why Ramsey still has this coveted job after years of running the program into the ground - I’d honestly rather give Axel Geller the job next year, just trying something new, anything

prediction: the hooking in that match is going to be unbelievable, hope the umpires take control and don’t let Tucker and Bresky stomp around intimidating them into submission all day
this is why I think they should do away with the 3 overrule default rule. It makes umpires scared to overrule early in the first few games and it creates a culture of hooking that snowballs as the match goes on.

it should be one warning then after that each overrule is an additional point penalty but no accumulation penalty.

i like that suggestion

I’d also like to see much less patience / tolerance for coaches arguing with the chair umpires - enough of the three minute abusive rants that rarely change anything and are usually quite unprofessional

Don't know how good of a recruiter Axel Geller would be, but at least he could excel at player development and teaching mental toughness.

wake has so far fought off multiple match-deciding deuce points (one against kingsley, one against seelig)

still cannot see them winning, but they're staying alive down 1-3

wake's season fittingly ends at the hands of 6th year senior Seelig
fittingly since they're poster children for finding ways to put older, more experienced players on their roster

looks like OSU is on their way to getting this done - maybe in shutout fashion if they can keep it up on 2,5,6 - how’s bresky taking it?
pretty good I would say. This actually wasn’t a very testy match. Very few like disputes compared to normal in matches like this.

Who cares, older players help you win, we have 24 year old Johannes on our team who is great doubs guy and next year add 24 year old Matias Simaar as a grad guy, good for Seelig even in year 6 playing his best tennis. Most top teams have veteran players, UNC has 3 guys that are 5 year players in their lineup, probably using around 7 scholarships this year due the "free" Covid rule. Texas won a national title with 4 seniors and 2 juniors. Baylor has 3 grad transfers in their lineup this year, and another grad student in doubles, the average age of their team is 23........age = wins
