I heard this, too.
UVa men beat Maryland 4-0, and women beat Clemson 4-1.
North Carolina shut out Wake 4-0 and FSU leads Virginia Tech 3-1 with several courts coming down the wire.
FSU does pull it out 4-1.
FSU survives the comeback attempt by VT. Had Gonzalez-Mendez not closed it out it could have been like Clemson/Wake yesterday. But not every team is as soft as Clemson in crunch time.
Pretty decent effort from Wake vs UNC. I am floored that Tsai took a set from Steiro, absolutely floored.
any chance the Pack take down the Devils?
It will be interesting to see if Saba can avange his lone ACC loss vs Powell. I would guess yes, since he is on fire.
Beck Bond in at 6 for NC State, bit of a secret weapon player. Huge forehand and athletic. However I think he plays pretty stupidly with no tactics. He has potential though.
Quite frankly, even though I am not a huge fan of Cunha, I hope he smashes Pulgar. I can't stand the guy.
Duke destroying NC State.
I am surprised at how badly Duke beat NC State at 5 and 6. Total of 3 games won for the Pack at those positions.
10 am Virginia vs Florida State. Virginia won during the year 4-3, with FSU winning at 4-6 and this was without Bucaro in the line-up. Will be interesting.
1 pm. Duke vs North Carolina. Big match. Can Duke avenge their loss? I expect that they will 4-2 Duke
JKH and Davis starting strong vs the UVA top 2. Lock can beat Courtney.
Zafiros can also win at 6. If the shocks hold on 1 and 2, who knows.
Duke takes doubles. UNc wins first set on 3,5,6 tied at 2. Saba cruising
3 courts clearly going Duke's way, 3 clearly going UNC's way.
UNC will need a rally from someone. Probably most likely from Boyajian. Can he do it again vs Mengel?
Duke LiveBlog. 3-2 Duke leads
4-2 with some good revenge wins by Cunha and Mengel
Iffffff duke can take the dubs pt vs UVA again - I think Cunha takes down Jenkins and duke gets the win this time - we shall see
What happened to the UVa commentary? How badly did Lock beat Courtney?
Courtney beat Lock, 6-2, 6-1. (Though I guess maybe you knew this...)
I saw the first set-- Lock threatened to break early but Courtney saved a couple of BPs with big serves. After that it was all Courtney, and after the first set I moved on to watching other matches.
This was my first chance to see D1 tennis and it didn't disappoint. I was very impressed by Frank's consistency and Jenkins' touch (along with the power and movement of pretty much everyone).
UVA vs Duke today.
Doubles will be close. Last time Duke won it, but that was when UVA was going through a rough patch.
Both of these teams are playing really well.
Where Duke needs to flip it is at #1 singles. Cunha must beat Jenkins today if they are too have any shot.
This time Wietoska will be in the line-up. Frank should rotuine him but his prescence in the line-up gives a tougher match to Shane than the last time these two played.
Comes down to #1 dubs with UVA winning at #3 8-5 and Duke taking #2 8-2.
Duke leading on courts 4-6. UVA on 1-3.
Uriguen back in line-up for Cavs, but getting blasted by Tahir. Jenkins is up 4-0 on Cunha
When was Duke ever leading on courts 4-5?
right now and throughout the whole first set
Shane has been up a break for quite a while on Court 5. Duke web site apparently had it wrong for a while, but UVa website and Duke live blog had it right.
No service breaks yet on court 4, so no one can be "ahead."
Hmm, the ACC website had Duke winning 5-3 at 5 for a long time.
Court 4 (Courtney/Saba) remained on serve for the entire first set (according to the electronic scoreboard at the site). I was camped out on the other side watching courts 1-3, but kept my eye on the other scores.
Considering UVa won the first set 6-3 on court 5, I'm not sure Duke was up (other than on serve) in that match either. Of course, I may be wrong, as my attention was on Jenkins/Cunha, Domo/Mengel, and Frank/Torsten.
good win by UVA men - now time to hope Duke can somehow avoid being seeded 8 or 9 with USC looming in the quarters - i continue to be disappointed with Cunha's performances in big ACC matches this year (1-3 vs UVAx2 and UNCx2) - unlikely that he'll beat Johnson for sure
Duke women, on the other hand, should have locked up a 2-3 seed in NCAAs this weekend as long as the NCAA doesn't decide to go to crazy overruling the rankings when they seed that field
Not a great showing by the ACC in thr tournament so far. VT goes down to Harvard and FSU barely squeaks by Boise. Those were two of the upper teams in the ACC this year.
Michael Redlicki is going to very legit next year for the Blue Devils.
Duke will be ready to go next year. Losing Wietoska but adding Redlicki,Levine and Semenzato.
Some interesting results for ACC players in futures. Getting a good idea of how players will stack up. Styslinger def Redlicki but loses to Tahir. Also future Wake Freshman Jonathan Ho def FSU's #5 Gonzalez-Mendez 6-4 6-1
Styslinger defeated the younger Redlicki, not the rising freshman at Duke, and took three sets to do it. He was not really on form this week from all reports.
Styslinger's results this whole year haven't been that impressive. I'd say redlicki is the best domestic incoming acc freshman
Also semenzato made the finals of a brazilian future last week and won doubles with cunha. Duke is bringing in two top notch freshman http://www.atpworldtour.com/posting/2012/2175/mds.pdf
it's gonna take a hell of an effort to knock out a lineup like the following next year if people stay healthy and the freshmen make the college transition fairly well (yes, if, if, i know, but that's all you can say at this point in the year) - can't imagine falling before the NCAA semis, and should have as goood a title shot as anyone
i expect none of those final 3 are too comfortable with being knocked out of the singles lineup after starting last year, so hopefully they're all putting in the work to get to the next level this summer
1 dubs - cunha/semenzato (the brazilians)
2 dubs - saba/mengel (the juniors)
3 dubs - some combo of redlicki/tahir/hemmeler/hammond
go duke! gonna be a rough year on both men's and women's sides for those who don't have some love for the blue devils!
I think Duke will have a national title shot as well. The scary thing is Saba at 5 considering he went 10-1 in the SCC at 4 last year. Tahir has been putting together great results, would be a near lock at 6. Could beat Virginia as well especially if Frank isn't 100% and not quite as good as last year. If that's the case than Duke is the ACC favorite.
Andreas Bjerrehus emerged this weekend as a top ACC player. Edging Yannick Maden and also beating Van Overbeek in straights.
There will be no bigger doubles point in the country than when UVA and Duke play.
I thought at the end of last year that VT would be bad this year, but that isn't the case. They have reloaded with two quality new players in Bjerrehus and Contini.
Some good wins for Brett Clark. He beat Hemmeler who had some impressive results in Tulsa.
College Tennis Online posted a preview of the ACC men's tennis season. Looks like a battle between Virginia and Duke. Hurricanes need to bounce back this season but I'm hot holding my breath.
ACC Men's Preview
Pretty good preview. They are overrating UNC though. Losing Hernandez and Boyajian will be a bigger deal than they realize. I don't believe in Vick as a consistent winner at the top of the line-up and Clark and DePaolo aren't ready for massive contributions.
Clemson tennis what do you think of Duke's lineup that they played vs. Hawaii
I was surprised to see Saba up at #2 and Mengel at #4. I always thought Saba had more potential than Mengel but until this point Mengel has been the better college player. Redlicki at 3 is about what I expected. Tahir at 6 will be a strong #6 player. I wonder if Semenzato will get into the line-up at some point.
FSU beat Furman and UCF 7-0. The surprise is that Cotrone was playing #1 vs Furman. He has really improved. From a sometimes #6 player to a top 3 at the least, impressive. I saw him play last year. He did seem to have a large arsenal of shots. He wasn't just a stock player. His speed was lacking though, that likely holds him back.
#4 is too high for Reed. That will be a weakness for FSU. Bucaro had a breakthrough year last year so it is surprising to see him actually take a step back this year and move down to #5.
I think I read semenzato is not eligible for the first couple matches.
Semenzato is not eligible until the spring semester, and that means that classes have to have started at Duke before he would be allowed to play. Not sure when their classes started.
Teams got some warmup matchups yesterday:
UNC 7, Wofford 0
UNC 6, Gardner-Webb 1
Duke 7, Elon 0
FSU 7, Florida Gulf Coast 0
FSU 7, UAB 0
Clemson 6, Winthrop 1
Clemson 7, Davidson 0
Wake 6, Charlotte 1
Wake 7, ETSU 0
Miami 7, Bethune-Cookman 0
VT 6, College of Charleston 1
VT 7, Longwood 0
FSU is doing something interesting with their top 3. They are rotating the 3 from positions 1-3. Cotrone, Kelly-Houston and Lock. At the moment it looks like Cotrone is playing the best tennis. Kelly-Houston was in over his head at 1 last season so a move to 2 or 3 will help him immensely. Lock plays a big game that can trouble top players so he could be playing #2 this year. If I were FSU I would just continue the rotation all year and never really set it, in order to throw other teams off.
Indiana at NC State today, no obvious sign of online scores so feel free to post here when you find out.
Hoosiers should roll. NC State looks weak this year. Powell was a mediocre 4 last year and is now playing #1. Unless he has a Kevin King style improvement it won't be good for NC State.
