Adidas/Halep split?

Halep will be pickup if she wins the AO singles title! Runner up, maybe not however! LOL!

I hope she doesn't turn into a pickup :(

There are probably a ton of negotiations going on right now. Lots of eyes will be on that women's final which means $$$$$.

Wouldn't be surprised to see her with a new sponsor for the final.

Adidas has done this twice now in recent memory. First making the shocking oversight with Djokovic and now Halep.

I'm assuming the Adidas employees involved with the "Djokovic Mistake" ended up in concrete boots. But it would intriguing if any of the same people had been involved in both sponsorship blunders.

How do you know that they were blunders?

They stayed with Djokovic where it mattered most.

Not really. They might have had 3 stripes on shoes and what it matters is the chest logo. That's the one shown when he's holding all those GS trophies. adi messed up on the opportunity of being part of tennis history: 4 GS in a row!

What I meant is that they managed to carve a market for what is considered outdated line of shoes and Adidas are still in the business of making money, not being part of history.

Also, there is no substitute for a good shoe, while one can play in whatever clothing he has.

^^^ Totally on point: there is not substitute for a good shoe! Regardless if it's on TV or not. And Novak's shoes are very good indeed (that if you have narrow feet, ha)

I see Halep cutting a deal with someone soon. It just pure revenue for her team to pay costs and help promote her image. Also, Wilson does not make her a profile racquet insert like Keys(back side), Serena.

Isn't Adidas the one who's paying for Cahill to be her coach? If she cuts ties with them, she'll have to fork over her own winnings to keep him. Can she afford Cahill on her own?

I don't see why not. She's consistently gone into second week of slams and consistently in top 3. She should be making enough to cover coaching. And Adidas is not the only company sponsoring her. If she can also get other apparel and shoes sponsors, too.

No, that deal is over. She pays personally. She had to ask him to come back after he quit when she was being way to negative.

Yes, the Adidas coaching team was ended at the end of 2016. It seems that Cahill too no longer has an Adidas sponsorship--he appeared to wear non-logoed clothing during the AO. Maybe they are looking for a package deal?

That would be a smart way to do it for any brand. Cahill is a well known name in our sport and he constantly shows up on TV, when Simona is playing.

Can't confirm but I heard from a pretty good source that Halep is in negotiations with Nike and New Balance and a decision will be made soon--probably will come down to $. Just putting out what I've heard, we'll see if my source is right.

saw the exact same info on a tennis website. http://www.**************.org/tenni...or-halep-romanian-athletes-are-marginalized-/

But he's more known internationally. Especially in China, or so they say.

Just to take one metric, she has 175,000 followers on twitter, he has millions.

Well, it just shows that one can be a good ad figure by being very good (as well as being from the right place).

I think that she will go with company other than Nike.

Djokovic was definitely a blunder. He was dropped and then barely a year later went on a massive tear. They paid the big bucks to Murray, and he didn't have the same measure of success.
That doesn't show he was a blunder. They might have looked at the track-record of sales of clothing he wore, in particular in Europe, and known that he wasn't worth the money even if he was much more successful than for example Murray. It could also have been a partial reflection of a reassessment of their tennis market - that having 5 or 6 new talents was much better marketing for them than one guy who was already fairly divisive in his appeal.

With Halep, her management know perfectly well that in the context of her career not having a clothing sponsor for a few months is basically irrelevant. That she did so well at the Aussie Open will only help her cause now - moreso than had she rushed into a new deal late last year.

When adi did that track record of Djokovic sales, he was just so so, only one GS title under his belt. Then he went on to make history. To me that's a big missed opportunity. With Nole on their team, adidas would have had a name to compete against nike's Roger and Rafa. In China people know only 3 names: Federer, Nadal and Djokovic. Nobody else comes even close.
Hope Halep's nike outfit will look at least as good as her no name red dress she wore at the AO.

That means less than you think sometimes in terms of helping sell items. Maybe in Serbia it would - but that is irrelevant to the global numbers.

Still not buying it. Adidas hasn't made special player-aligned outfits like Nike has for eons. They seem more a team effort - being seen on lots of players through the levels of play. As I said, maybe they'd done the numbers already and worked out they were better off making a range of clothes and having a broad group of players wearing the stuff economically. Djokovic's results after they dropped him might not have made any difference for all we know. You would assume they would but compared to what it would cost to keep him (or regain him after he went on a blinder) the pay-off still might not be there.

Actually, they know Federer. Nadal and Djokovic don't come within a country mile of him in popularity in China.

That's the case for the general public, where they call him king Roger and don't really know how tennis keeps score. From my experience of living here for many years, people who actually play the game, are pretty evenly divided between Roger, Rafa and Nole fans.

the real reason the chinese prefer Fedr over Rafa and Nole is the smash volley. they go nuts whenever they see one of those.

pretty hard to hit smash volleys when glued to the baseline...

actually, none of these 3 can match the popularity of Li Na and she wears... yes it is Nike. But I agree with you on Adidas' missed opportunity, Djokovic made history soon after and his sponsors like Uniqlo all benefit tremendously. Talking about the sponsorship, Djokovic and his team definitely took advantage of his rising popularity in China and negotiated very nice deals with brands tailored for Asia Pacific market. Look at his sponsor portfolio, Uniqlo, ANZ (banking), Peugeot, Jacob's Creek (wine)... you may not know these companies but they are big in Asia. When Djokovic played in Beijing, he would wear a slightly different T-shirt, the Peugeot logo patch on his left arm changed from its native French spelling to its Chinese name (东风标致). The subtle change like this not only happened in China, also at Roland Garros. The digital billboard would display Peugeot in its Chinese name, and this bilingual rotation of Peugeot and 东风标致 only happened when Djokovic was on court playing, not even Li Na (she was signed by Mercedes-Benz).

Apart from his shoe line I don't think that Adi ever made an effort for his personal line as opposed to Lacoste, who couldn’t wait to put out his signature items.

I say that it is a bigger problem that they lost him for the shoe market, but that also tells us that he asked for big bucks for that to happen.

It's a pity, that Adidas don't produce any signature clothing line now. How good it was before when they made Lendl and Edberg collections. Really classic items.

True. Especially Edbgerg- that one with the SE on it. They did a dog or two for Lendl, that one with his face on it, wowzers ugly.
