Agassi apparel re issued

Head re issued the LE Agassi radical as a collecters item, do you think Nike should have re issued his clothing line and sneakers? Personally I think that would have been awsome. It would have been even cooler if Adidas issued the Nike apparel and shoes as there own. Think about it, players have used paint jobs on other comapnies racquets for years so why not in this instance. In my opinion the Agassi line of apparel both Nike and Adidas were great looks for the court, would love to see some of those patterns brought back to life instead of what is out there now, more Nike than Adidas, love Adidas line not a big fan of Nike and there Man capris and tux shorts.

Breakpoint, it would have been cool non the less. Did not know about the life time contract with Head, thanks for the info.

Bring back the denim shorts with spandex!

You will be the talk of the country club...

Before they rescind your membership. :-D

I had those shorts when I was a kid, damn they were uncomfortable, and really ugly now that i think of it, denim and pink spandex, sweet

I would love for the mid 90's apparel to be available again, in my opinion the best line of tennis apparel, looks wise of course.

i'm optimistic. They have remade a few of the McEnroe items as samples that never made it to market. There was also the good 2002 US Open retro line.

As for the contract...doesn't matter if it's a lifetime contract. Look at the killing Fila has on the Borg White Line. Borg has been under contract since 1983. Nike can do it, but they just don't care.

Nike's resources for retro stuff are focused on Jordan, running, and basketball. Nike tennis designers are simply working to put a new line of clothing every 3 months. Consideration for a growing tennis audience is useless. No matter what crap they put out, people buy all of it. The idea of changing anything is not on the agenda.

My advice: quit buying Nike until they release the retro line. How about we start a website?

Brian Purdie, I have already made the switch, not a fan of Nike anymore. Boring and overpriced in my opinion. I am all for the re release of retro line sign me up

It stinks though how he went to Adidas. If he stayed with Nike they could've probably done this. Or you can call up James Blake and get his.

i've thought of ways to do this for years. Like make my own orange/black shirt off cafepress.com or those other make your own shirt places. Unfortunately, they only allow for small space on the chest to apply the graphic.

Any other ideas? Anyone know how to mass produce 50 shirts? And would enough people be willing to pay the expensive costs of production of an independent project that would still yeild an inferior result compared to the Nike originals?

For example, check out my Pete Sampras Sergio Tacchini archer in the avatar. I actually have a number of these shirts. I scanned in the design, and even varied the color combinations to make more cool designs with it. However, due to the cut of a shirt, no graphic shirt store can place the archer on a silk screen in the corner of the right chest like the original.

I'm pretty sure they have remade some of the Challenge court shoes recentlly (the mid-size ones with the neon yellow zig-zag stripe) and I remember Blake was wearing a re-issued Agassi shirt last year at the open?

I guess are only hope is that Nike signs a flashy player who idealizes Agassi and (this is were Blake loses out) is a dominant player.

Do you know any names of Nike tennis designers?

Nike could actually re issue the Agassi line in different colors and have a different player wear them, unlickely but could be cool.

Don't forget that Agassi is suing Target for selling sandals that have the "Agassi" name on them because he has no contract with Target (meaning he gets no royalties from the sale of those sandals). If Nike tried to sell clothes with the "Agassi" name on them, he would likely sue Nike as well since he no longer has a contract with Nike and won't see a dime from any re-release of an "Agassi" line of clothes.

Good point, Break Point. What i was saying was copy the patterns and change the colors without Agassi's name attached.
Yes, Nike may be able to get away with doing that.

It's like when Borg sued Fila for trying to reissue clothes with the original "Bj" logo on them, so instead Fila changed the logo to "Fila" and copied some of their own designs from the '70's and called it the "Settanta Line".

I do not see what the problem would be. Nike owns that line by simply not putting Agassi's name on them how could there be a dispute. I guess this is all a moot point considering Nike's inabilty to produce a good Tennis line. Feels like they just gave up and are focused on the bread and butter, basketball. Oh well, one can hope that they get there you know what togehter and go back to what made them popular in tennis.

exactly. it can work. Don't forget Nike has rereleased Ken Griffey Jr and Bo Jackson trainers without paying them anything.

Do you think Nike knows that there last few lines of tennis apparel were awful? I would venture to say that a lot of tennis players (non pro) have switched to other clothing lines cause of this.

i don't think they know it. I see them still selling out. The designs aren't great, but it's "Nike". Even I check it out before I look to other clothing lines. People will still buy crappy Nike stuff over the better adidas lines just because it's Nike. I would bet sales have been humming along as usual. As such, designers are humming right along. Their products are moving at a moderate pace, which is fine with them. The company is only so big. Your resources have to go to the money making retro basketball lines. Check out NikeTalk and other websites to see what I mean. The niche of Sneakerheads like myself focuses on a select number of Nike models. If you saw the number of crappy "collectable" Air Force1's are out there, you would be stunned. However, people are buying them up. I was suprised they released the Air Tech Challenge III at all (I think the ATC II would have sold better).

Because business is well at Nike Tennis, there is no need to shake up the department and go after more revenue. They need someone bright enough in upper management to push for a resurrection of bold design in Nike Tennis. Either that, or they have to convince the Nike retro department to take an interest in it. It's a risk, but I think they find that it sells well.

We have already had 3 major figures on the mens Nike side in Blake, Federer, and Nadal. Blake loves the Agassi line, but he can't tell Nike to make up the line by himself. Nadal has actually done more to change the face of Nike with the sleeveless shirts and capri pants. I don't wear them, but I applaud the change. This is the only bold move Nike has made since the 2001 US Open line (one of the best!).

Good points throughout your response, but to me this last one says it all. Capris? Come on Nike this is mens tennis. Yes I will give Nadal credit for the sleeveless but the Capris are horrible. But he has been the only one to make a difference as far as bold choices go. If Blake would manage to step his game up there might be a chance to see more Nike apparel in the vein of Agassi's 90's thru 01. I too look at Nike before choosing Adidas. But go with Adidas non the less.
