Agassi finds Coria's behavior "unacceptable"

Q. Coria announced the ball out. Any comment on that? You looked quite annoyed.

ANDRE AGASSI: Yeah, well, he shook his finger before it bounced, first of all. Then he circles it as if it was obviously out and starts walking back as if it was obviously out. I understand making a mistake, but I don't understand suggesting that when it's that close, that it's clearly out. It was an unreasonable response and one I didn't appreciate at all. If you're not sure, that's what the umpire's there for. It's better to be not sure - that's okay, we can live with that. But to act like it's sure when it's obviously very close is unacceptable behavior.

Q. Are you angry with him, or everything end on the court?

ANDRE AGASSI: That behavior. I said that behavior is unacceptable: Just to call it with your finger before it bounced, to circle it and to walk away as if it's for sure when it obviously isn't that for sure. I'm disappointed in that behavior.

Q. After that, you gave back a point. Was a lesson to him?

ANDRE AGASSI: No. I mean, my issue most of the time is finding the mark. I struggle with this anyhow. Then if I find the mark, most of the time I'm unsure about it because if it's close, I don't know. So I always prefer somebody else making that decision. But if it's clear, I mean... The ball that he hit was coming off the line and there was no other marks around, so this one was pretty easy to see.

Apparently it was acceptable to Agassi because he continued to play.. So Agassi should have said something like: "That behavior is almost unacceptable but I want to win the match so I'll accept the behavior and continue playing"

the guy blew a 5-2 lead and lost the tb 7-0, he was probably mad.

btw since when does ur opponent get to decide whats acceptable and not? i thought that was the job of the umpire.

Nadal hit a ball out and Coria makes a circle half the size of the court in jest. What a jerk

Coria has always been a little dweeb. He is very unsportsman. He is also always riddled with excuses-like the Williams sisters.

His wife is hot though!

I saw the Coria-Agassi match, it was pretty obnoxious what he did. What happened was Agassi hit ball close to the sideline that was obviously very close. Coria circled a mark & walked back to serve like the point was over(the umpire hadn't even called the score yet) The umpire came down, looked & said it hit the line. Coria started pouting & whining for a few minutes.

It seems to be very common for players to circle marks before anyone looks at them & act like they have the final say & that their opponent should just trust them. I think certain players may earn this with their sportsmanship(like Federer, Moya), but Coria hasn't earned it, judging by his oncourt behavior.

You're absolutely right about Coria. Agassi is very much a spoiled brat though and when he is losing a match he becomes easily annoyed about every little thing and whines a lot. His arrogance is unacceptable.

I would not say Coria is the only player who does this. I've seen quite a few
clay courters use this gamesmanship.

But, as I know, Coria has this bad reputation among tour players, I've heard,
for his using lots of gamesmanships. I believe Agassi's comment has this
context. This tag of bad sportmanship or cheater is not a good thing.
The tag will follow for your life....

And fastdunn, Coria already has a worse tag to deal with: "nandrolene user"

I remember when Korda got caught, he said the other players were pretty cold to him when he was appealing the suspension.

Cheaters(or perceived cheaters) aren't exactly popular among their peers.

Coria is very annoying. He is always complaining, always on edge. Must be his repressed sexuality. IMO, the only thing his wife appeals to is his sense of asthetics.

Good point, Coria is an extremely good investment for one of the thousands beautiful dealers in Argentina.

I don't know what to say about Coria's actions but Agassi was definitely ticked off after that^ causing him to go off per se.

Did that really happen in the Coria/Nadal match? If it did, that is too funny :) Guille you make me proud, LOL

Coria is the man, regardless of what any of you guys have to say about him. He has supreme touch and control. Does alittle gamesmenship really matter that much? Agassi is just sore after getting his butt whipped on clay, because he knows hes no match for coria, period.

From what I heard, Coria was taking a perscription drug that contained the illegal substance banned by the tour and he had no idea. Can someone elaborate on this story as it is pretty interesting, I'd like to know more about it.

Ferdinand, yes it was funny, and if he did that to you in a match shirley El you would strangle him.

Just a DUBM (spelled incorrectly on purpose) comment! For starters, AA has a winning record against Coria; including Australian Open where Coria was cremated so bad he did not finish the match. And just recently at the Nasdaq where he got a free tennis lesson in front of 15,000 spectators. Oh, by the way he cried like a b i t c h throughout the whole match! He also cried like a b i t c h when he did not have the heart to win the French Open last year, and then faked an injury.

Like somebody else said in another post-Coria looks like Chaka from Land of the Lost.

I thought Coria's circle antics against Nadal were b/c Nadal circled like a hundred marks up to that point in the match. I at least took it that way and I think someone should poke fun at Nadal. I guess when its a little steriod monger who does it people don't think its so funny.

I don't know why everyone gets annoyed by pro tennis players behaviour, they are all except a rare few (federer an example) who are pretentious and spoilt little rich brats! So get over it!

has agassi ever beat him on clay?

agassi is a crybaby, he always has been, probably why his parents abandoned him at the age of 3. he yells when ppl dont toss the ball perfectly and yells at ball kids for standing 4inches out of position. oddly enough i do like watching him play.

if u wanna talk about a lesson lets talk about agassi's a few years ago at the french open. agassi had sweat pouring off that bald head while coria looked a bit chilly out there.

I think the difference between the two is that Agassi would admit he's made some mistakes in the past where Coria would not. Everybody makes poor judgement it's how you respond to it that makes the difference.

Hhhhwell I for one find it PERFECTLY acceptable. In fact, more people, like me, should do it! They should also taunt their opponent, by like walking slowly to the mark and slowly point at it. Daaammnnn... that'd be TIGHT!

No he has not. But he has at least given Coria a tough match both times. Where as Coria has not even come close to beating Agassi on the hard courts.

By the way, AA =8 Grand Slams (including Coria's precious French Open)

I have to agree here. IMO Federer and Rafter are the excpetions

True, this is standard behavior for many pros. I can think of many, including those whose games I admire - Melzer, Henman, Agassi, Sampras, Muster, Courier, Chang, Malisse, Ferrero, Kafelnikov, on and on - going into this 'Coria' mode when it suits them. It's second and third generation McEnroe and Connors stuff, and it's also the rule in NTRP matches - less so in Senior competition. When he was younger, wait, including at Davis Cup and also in Miami, I believe, Agassi likes to call umps f___g f_____t, is breaking his racquet, etc....in total parallel to his slow decline. Great as he is, as much as he has done for his sport, Andre must be in total control of his surroundings...ballboys, etc...at all times. Rafter, Federer, Todd Martin, Corretja - these are notable exceptions to a fairly sad rule.

Well, Coria doesn't have much of a past yet. Agassi admitted these mistakes at an older age than Coria is now. That said, my impression of him is worsening.

Agree with CP, be objective, many people think lots of Agassi's on-court behavior were unacceptable. How suddenly Agassi becomes standard good on-court behavior? Looked at history, Coria behaved a lot better on court than Agassi did at same age. Why is everyone is so forgiving for Agassi's actions, but can't do that to other players?

Get over it, Coria called the ball out. So what? Agassi did a lot worse than that! End of story.

I agree with this. I don't care much about on-court behavior. But I think if you decide you do, you'd better have been a guy who's walked the walk.

If you're going to be the kind of guy who declares what is and isn't "inappropriate" on court behavior, you'd better be sure you have a squeaky-clean track record. No incidents, for example, where you told the crowd to, "watch this," and then caught your opponent's serve with your hand instead of bothering to return it, in a lame attempt to show him up.

Coria is 23. Agassi is... 35 now, is it? I would sincerely hope that Agassi would be the more mature of the two now. That said, Agassi still has "brat" in him. He's just learned to control it a little better than he used to. Good for him. He's still the pot calling the kettle black. I still fondly remember when he "accidentally" smacked a ball at a lineswoman at Wimbledon. Classy! How old was he then.... 31? I can't remember what year that semi with Rafter was...

My "shut up, Andre" stands
