When Andre Agassi takes the court on Tuesday for his second-round match in the Mercedes-Benz Cup in Los Angeles, astute tennis fans will notice a change -- his clothes.

Adidas announced on Monday that the company has signed the 35-year-old to a long-term partnership. Agassi will wear adidas footwear and apparel, but much of the agreement includes giving products and financial support to the tennis star's foundation.

"I'm excited about my new partnership with adidas," Agassi said in a statement. "Our relationship not only means that I will be working with one of the best brands in the world but, more importantly, also provides support to my foundation."

The Agassi Foundation was founded in 1994 and has since become one of the most active philanthropic organizations run by an athlete. From 1996-2003, public records show that the foundation contributed $29 million to causes related to underprivileged and abused children.

"If there's a heaven, this guy is going there," said Martyn Brewer, director of sports marketing for adidas America. "His commitment to kids is beyond compare."

The move from Nike to adidas might befuddle some tennis fans. Perhaps no other athlete, aside from Michael Jordan and Tiger Woods, is more identified with the Swoosh.

"Andre Agassi and Nike is as indelible of a connection that a brand and athlete can have," said Paul Swangard, managing director of the University of Oregon's Warsaw Sports Marketing Center. "It's going to be a challenge to undo that."

"It's great that he will be wearing adidas for some upcoming tournaments," Brewer said. "But this deal is more about using tennis as a vehicle to help children instead of Andre being the face of adidas."

Agassi turned pro in 1986, but Nike didn't sign him to his first contract until 1988.

The following year, as he surpassed $1 million in career earnings, Nike cashed in on headbands and bleached denim shorts at retail thanks to Agassi. He loved his neon pink so much that he refused to play at Wimbledon because of the All England Club's all-white dress code.

"Nike has enjoyed a long and successful relationship with Andre Agassi, one of the greatest players in the sport," said Nike spokesperson Dean Stoyer.

Agassi's tagline became "Image is Everything," thanks to a Canon commercial that he starred in that used the line. Years later, he said he regretted that it became his unofficial motto.

"I think that phrase itself wasn't reflective of who I was, even then," Agassi told the Cincinnati Enquirer in 2000. "It's sad to say, even in saying the line and filming the campaign, it never quite occurred to me what was being said or expressed. Some lessons you have to learn a tough way. That certainly was one of them."

Throughout the course of his career, Agassi has won 59 career titles, including eight Grand Slam crowns. He won the Australian Open in 2003, but he has only won two titles since then.

According to Forbes Magazine, Agassi was due about $40 million in Nike stock at the conclusion of his contract, which expired in January. A Nike source indicated that Agassi was paid in full as specified by his contract, but there was no stock payment involved. Agassi's agent, Perry Rogers, did not return a call seeking comment.

Even though she has been retired since August 1999, adidas still has Steffi Graf, whom Agassi married in 2001, under contract. Graf and Agassi have recently starred in commercials for Genworth Financial. The most recent spot features an actor playing their 3-year-old son taking on pro Taylor Dent. Brewer said that adidas might team the two in a commercial, though it's too early too tell.

After pulling out of Wimbledon because of a back injury, Agassi said he would talk about retirement at the end of the season. Despite the likelihood that he will end his tennis career in the near future, Agassi still has active endorsement deals. He has nine years left on a deal with 24-Hour Fitness and a lifetime contract with Head rackets.

I'm really sad to read this. Nike and Andre were the reasons I got interested in tennis way back when he wore those acid wash denim shorts. I guess the price wasn't right and Addidas may still be looking long term with Andre. It just doesn't make any sense from a brand image perspective. Andre will always be the face of Nike Tennis. The image below just doesn't look right.

Apparently it's only a 3-year deal for Andre with Addidas unlike his lifetime contract with Head. Hopefully, Nike comes to their senses and resigns him after that. Not sure how Nike doesn't want to be a part of his kids charity.

If he further aggrevates his back/hip injury, perhaps he may not make it another 3 years. But he will still dominate the commercials being run on U.S. broadcasts of tennis events.

Remember McEnroe, even after all these years, is still one of the most sought-after tennis figures for TV commercials. Among males, Andre is the only one who outsells Mac across age/gender groups. Andre's influence will long outlast his ATP career. Nike's loss is Adidas' gain.

Sad is right

:( Sad is right formerchamp. It is like seeing Emmitt Smith play for the Arizona Cardinals (for you Cowboy fans out there), just not right. But, I guess when you get married, compromises are evident. Maybe Steffi convinced him of the superiority of Addidas over Nike. I actually play with Agassi racquets and wear Nike stuff b/c of him. I know it does not make a difference in how I play, but it makes me feel that much closer to my tennis idol.

no I know that but it's more about about legacy, tradition so I'm hoping Nike comes to their senses and wants to have a relationship with the man that put Nike and Nike Tennis on the map.

You said it babar! It's almost as big if Michael Jordan signed with Reebok. Sure both are past their primes but the association with Jordan will always be Nike and I feel the same about Andre. I just don't know what to wear anymore and I don't think I'll ever wear Adidas.

Well, I guess you could always wear nothing and just play naked. ;) It has been pretty hot out there lately anyway. LOL. :p

Ok now I'm looking to get all of Andre's old Nike stuff. Does anyone know if he actually wore the Nike Men's Fall Sphere React Crew? As far as I know the last thing he wore was the Nike Men's Sphere Strike Crew at the French Open. I don't believe he's played a match anywhere since then.

Maybe Nike Tennis, but I always thought that Jordan had something to do with putting Nike on the map.

I think it was John McEnroe who was the first high profile athlete to sport a pair of Nikes putting them on the map. Jordan just took them to the next level. Come back Andre!

Agassi on the new deal

Q. Can you talk about the recently ended relationship you had with Nike. It was, what, 17 years?

ANDRE AGASSI: More than that.

Q. Completely changed the way tennis was marketed.

ANDRE AGASSI: 19 years. Yeah, well, it's been a long, great relationship with Nike - no question. My 10-year deal with them was up early this year. We started some discussions that quickly led to an understanding and a comfort level on my terms and their terms as to what our business was. But like every relationship/partnership I have in my life now, I tie heavily into the foundation, to the kids that I have back home that I'm responsible for. I wanted a component of the contract to reflect that priority and that value. That wasn't something that they showed any interest in. You know, I didn't begrudge them for it. They make great shoes and that's their business. It's not my place to tell them they need to care about children. I'm at a great place in my life. You know, I don't have to worry about me. I've been blessed with this game, all the things that have come as a result of it. But I do have to worry about my foundation. I have to worry about the children that I'm responsible for. adidas stepped up and shared my vision and passion for it. It's just something I'm pretty excited about and glad to be a part of.

Seeing Dre in Montreal not wearing the famous swoosh was really weird and somewhat hurtful to see. I know it is just a brand of clothing but Agassi was Nike. How many people went out to buy the newest Nike Stuff because he was wearing it? I know I did, and still did up to a few weeks ago. You can't tell me Nike wasn't willing to sponsor his agency. As much as I love dre I totally think it was Steffi that convinced him. He is kind of whipped by her. Nike may not have sold more shirts if he would have stayed with them for the twilight of his career but you cannot say that Adidas won't sell more shirts now. Dre, if you read this switch back and we will pretend like nothing happened ok?
