Agassi vs. Coria *Spoiler*

Today Andre was just amazing winning 4 and 1 against an in-form Coria. The quality of ballstriking from both players, but especially Andre, was just ridiculous. A great match to watch. There were some terrific exchanges at net as well.

Andre's performance today has to go in the top 3 performances I've seen. My list is, of course, subjective and in no particular order: Andre today, Federer against Roddick at the 2003 Wimbledon semifinal, and Pete against Andre in the 1999 Wimbledon final.

It was a fun match to watch indeed. Agassi played some crazy tennis and seemed to run Coria to death out there. If Agassi keeps up his level of play, he is a serious contender in winning this tournament. Can we say Federer v Agassi in the final?

Lose control of your bladder shots:

  • On the run, around the net post forehand from the baseline
  • 360 degree drive volley followed by the dropper

Agassi is superb ... kinda wondering is he using that Flexpoint technology in his racquet. It Seem like he is delivering the balls anwhere he want with each groundstroke.

The around the netpost shot was actually a two-handed backhand.
I was surprised that the Agassi camp didn't react more strongly to that shot, it was wicked.
Agassi was HOT tonight. I haven't seen him do the between the legs shot for years until tonight.

That's the perspective of a left-handed viewer for you :P Strange, at first I thought, Agassi is hitting from the right side of the court, hitting a lefty forehand. haha my bad, now that I think about it, it was a backhand - damn you righties, I'll kill you all... on the tennis court that is, with my kick serve.

Puts everyone in awe watching his game last night. He was in the zone.

He could have beaten anyone with that level of play. Absolutely superb.

The Andre / Hewitt match should be great. Andre has added a lot of power to his shots and seems fit.
Not sure about the head to head match-up with Hewitt, but hope ESPN shows it.

I generally agree with this and all the other comments about how superbly Agassi was playing (it was beautiful to watch, unless you were rooting for Coria). But we should remember that Coria doesn't have all that powerful a serve, and that gave Agassi a chance to use his great return game to big advantage. Agassi was really on, hitting shots early on the rise and with great precision, but against a server like Roddick or Lubjic (knocked out of tournament by Federer) or even Federer he would be back on his heels earlier in the point and that may be the difference. Coria is a good opponent for Agassi, especially with Agassi's fitness level these days.

What a fantastic first set! Coria is great to watch when he's not injured. Agassi's around the post shot was great, awesome match!

That was awesome watching Andre run the much younger Coria! At his age AA can still bring it on any given day. The challenge for a senior citizen is bringing it 7 matches in a row for the GS or 6 in a TMS. It was great TV viewing.

NOT!!!

The best match I've seen Andre play since the AO loss to Safin in the Semis ... in 2004. Thos exchanges were SICK!!!

Yeah, I haven't seen him play this well since 2002 when he added the running cross-court forehand. I was impressed in the way he wasn't phased by the retrieving of Coria. This was the perfect warmup for Hewitt

Not sure about the head to head match-up with Hewitt, but hope ESPN shows it.

Here's the H2H

1998 Adelaide ............ Hewitt def. Agassi....7-6, 7-6
1999 Los Angeles.............. Agassi def. Hewitt.... ??
2001 Indian Wells ..............Agassi def. Hewitt.....6-4, 3-6, 6-4
2001 Masters Cup............. Hewitt def Agassi......6-3,6-4
2002 San Jose...................Hewitt def. Agassi....4-6, 7-6, 7-6
2002 Cincinnatti................ Hewitt def Agassi.....7-5, 6-3
2002 U.S. Open ..............Agassi def Heiwtt......6-4, 7-6, 6-7, 6-2
2004 Cincinnatti ...............Agassi def Hewitt......6-3, 3-6, 6-2

Agassi's hip sure doesn't seem to be bothering him right now. Looks like he's moving a little better than he has for the past 6-12 months.

He also seemed to be hitting through the ball a little more. Especially on the backhand side, where he seemed to really be leaning into the ball. Great effort. I hope he keeps it up.

Bertchel, According to atptennis.com Agassi was up 5-4 and I guess Hewitt retired, or was defaulted or something.

Agassi did look great last night. Coria was his usual questioning self. But, both of them did seem to realize that they were playing a different level and there were smiles on both sides of the court. Truly a great match.

How about the point after Andre's tweener? First ball, Coria sends a forehand deep to Agassi's backhand. NOT a floater. Not a looper. Andre did not have a lot of time to set up or react. Coria recovers one stride to the center, and in the time it took Coria to adjust to cover the center, the ball passed behind him, clean winner.

It was like Andre decided to make up for the tweener, just created a winner at will, on a shot where there seemed to be NO opportunity to hit a winner.

Very fun and inspiring to watch double A at his best.
