Alberto Costa Now using POG instead of Fischer?

POGO

Hall of Fame
I'm currenty watching USOPEN match costa vs hewitt, and costa is using an unstenciled POG OS. Did he loose his endorsement with Fischer rackets? Amazing that pros keep going back to POGs, as Spadea did. Spadea switched over from his pog os to the O3 tour and now back to his pog os again.

Make a search. Costa went back to his old Prince months ago.

Hi Pogo, I'm watching it, too. what a windy day.
Who else has changed their racket to POG? I'd like to know.
And, I heard Pete Sampras has once used POG as well. can u verify this?

This year that I know of it is Vince Spadea and now Alberto Costa are back to using their trusty POG OS.

I can't verify if Sampras ever used the POG. I think he had always used the PS 6.0 85 for his entire pro tennis carreer.

I think that's a POG LB Costa has. Sampras gave an interview a year or so ago when he said he regretted having played the Wilson 6.0 85- that he would have won the French in addition to his 14 other majors had he used a POG OS.

wow....was this in a magazine or a tv interview, and how was giving the interview?

At the risk of repeating myself, "You CANNOT" be serious!!! (see below).

Had Sampras used the POG OS for his entire career, he would have won exactly ZERO grand slams. There's no way he would of had his amazing serve with the POG OS, which is what won him 14 Grand Slams. His volleys would have also been much, much worse. The PS 6.0 85 is a scalpel, and is so different from the POG OS that your claim above cannot be credible. So unless you can provide evidence with either a transcript or a video of this interview, it's just too hard to believe.

This seems to be a trend among pros in general. I recall Safin using a Dunlop frame for a while, but he decided it was best to stay with his Prestige. Whenever a pro tinkers with their racquet, it usually shows in their results in a negative way. Hopefully guys like Ferrero and Coria realize this and switch back to their old frames for the good of their respective games.

Safin did not decide it was best to stay with his prestige, it was always a prestige in that dunlop paint job. if you search on gettyimages you can see clearly that his dunlop had CAP grommets and looks exactly like a prestige.

The thing about ferrero is that his contract is with Head, and there is NO WAY that he can use his old LB POG. If i recall, head sued dunlop because safin was still using a Head racquet under the Dunlop paintjob, that was why dunlop had to drop safin as a sponsor. And with Coria, i do believe he is Prince's #1 player on tour so there is no way that they will allow him to switch back to his POG because this would show the public that even their best player thinks their newest technology sucks huge balls.

So, is the only reason why Costa switched back to the POG is that his contract with fischer is over

Denty151, with regards to player contracts, does a player have the right to terminate the contract if he wants to? I'm pretty sure players can, even though they would get fined I think.

i remember watching that interview.. sampras didnt say he'd wish he use the POG, he said he wished he had tried out a bigger frame racquet but he was afraid that he'd lose control if he did.. he didn't mention the POG specifically if im not wrong..i believe the interview was around the french open this year when agassi started using the instinct

i'm pretty sure players have the right the terminate contracts, but i would think that there would be a FAT fine.

Look for pictures of Costas match and see if he blacked out his racquet, i think that would be a strong indicator that his contract is over. If you look at James Blake, he is still using his "200G M-Fil" without the stencil but he is not under contract (did he get resigned??) i think the reason he does not black out his racquet is because he is hoping to renew his contract with dunlop. but that's just my guess

*EDIT:*

BLACKED OUT..

yo swan song,

did you play for the san marino high school tennis team? and if so are you still playing for them or did you graduate?

i dunno if james blake wants to show dunlop his support. My guess is he still likes the racquet. at least he is honest to the public about what he is using and doesn't paint his racquet black or with another racquets cosmetic. I'm not saying its wrong but i do like the black look, it's pretty neat =D

I'm not saying he would have, just pointing out he said it.

Thanks for the link, but sorry, I cannot read French. Did Sampras specifically mention the POG OS by name in that article?
My French isn't as good as it used to be for that matter. He didn't mention the brand, just described it as the oversize racquet that power baseliners like Chang and Agassi used. Deuce at the time criticized him for second-guessing such a succesful career since such a switch would obviously have been risky - trying to have your cake and eat it, too.

his racquet is still a paintjob so technically he is NOT HONEST with the public.

denty, I am currently a senior and I am still deciding whether to come back or not. Right now, I am focusing more on tournaments and academics.

Thanks for asking though.

Do you know a tennis pro instructor by the name of Yuri that teaches in San Marino?

Seeing as you use the POG, i think i know who you are. Stupid question, but do you by any chance know Evan Jugensen and Ken Ochiai?

In every pro players contract is written that he can use other rackets if he can't play with the one from the contract brand. Mostly they paint their old rackets black and use it with or without the logo. Surely the company will reduce or stop the payment.
The thing with Safin and Dunlop/Head was not that they painted a Head racket like a Dunlop (they made it with Philippoussis, too). The problem was that he went on using the CAP grommets. And these are patent pended. Thats all.

That's not correct - the FCC demands that a celebrity endorser actually use the product he endorses. With racquets, it's deemed legally ok if the company makes/has license to the mold whether or not it's the particular model advertised. Miller beer had to pull their Abdul-Jabaar ad in their retired sports star series when it was pointed out he was a non-drinker.

Here's a quick translation:
---------
My only regret is of course that of not having won RG.
That's funny, because now that I am not active anymore, I've found
another reason of being sorry, that of not having tried to play on
clay with a racket with a larger frame. My racket had practically the
size of a wood frame from the old times. It was stiff and heavy. One
needed lots of effort for placing spin or for driving the ball on
clay. I've had several occasions to test larger size rackets and I
was surprised each time by the ease with which I could hit the ball
harder without effort and with which I could put spin on it.
----------

No mention of POG.

No, it is not a stupid question at all. I know both of them very very well.
