So the question to a casual is, why did Nadal win more big tournaments (and more matches overall) than Alcaraz, yet fail to finish year end number 1? The answer is competition - he had someone else in his year who was exceptional. It is literally only because of this that he finished 2nd. Alcaraz does not have that, his challengers have been far weaker, inconsistent or banned.
