Wow, since forever anyone called Rafael is affectionate called Rafa, I've never hear any Rafael being called Rafi. It's funny, Rafa was not a nickname I heard from any latinos until Nadal came along. Suddenly, Mexicans, Brazilians and other latinos named Rafael go by Rafa. I used to hear Rafi.
Roger was cool because it made you think of Roger Moore, James bond. Smooth and debonair.
- James is a freak. Nobody's knees lasts that long and plays at that high level.
Bjorn Borg's middle named is Rune. His full name is Björn Rune Borg. You gotta have a cool name to be an ATG. Bjorn Borg wouldn’t be who he is if his name was Bobby Samson.
Alcaraz is Nadal level hypebale player.probably not. at the same age both fed and nadal had clear-cut brands...fed was an absolute virtuoso playing with an elegance and creativity that was off the charts, and nadal...with the clamdiggers, tank tops, long hair, incredible grit and athleticism, was well on his way to iconic status as well. rune and sinner are 'tennis players'...alcaraz, with his incredible energy and shotmaking ability, has a better shot of carving out a recognizable niche at least.
Alcaraz is Nadal level hypebale player.
There are many players who can be hyped by media but apart from Alcaraz none of them even comes close to Djokovic.
There are people who speak other languages than English. They may have a different opinion.unfortunately, Carlos or Alcaraz, Holger or Rune(ah) Jannik or Sinner names just don’t have any POP as a Roger or Fed(erer) Rafa or Nadal or Pete or Andre Borg Johnny Mac etc
Novak lacks it as well and he not nearly as popular as his rivals.
Jordan Kobe Lebron etc hell L James has been playing for 20 years and still carries the NBA
So despite being great you need a great name and the next “big 3” just don’t have it.
Look at Alexander Zverev, if he had won 5-6 grand slams by now then he could have been marketed as Alexander the Great
I disagree. I think they sound cool even without the trophies."Roger Federer" and "Rafael Nadal" don't even sound particularly cool, it's just the weight of history behind their name that makes you perceive it that way.
1. CA has said many times he doesn’t like being called Carlos and prefers Carlito or Charlie. I don’t see Nike selling those names …he will be popular due to a complete lack of competition for the next few years at least.
Hopefully, you are trying to be funny.unfortunately, Carlos or Alcaraz, Holger or Rune(ah) Jannik or Sinner names just don’t have any POP as a Roger or Fed(erer) Rafa or Nadal or Pete or Andre Borg Johnny Mac etc

He's been called Stan all his life in our french speaking part of Switzerland.Shortening his beautiful Slavic name for marketing purpose ?
Rafa's legacy was created as a consequence of his electrifying style of play, fighting spirit, tennis achivements and, also, defeating Fed in the process.Nadal's legacy was created as a consequence of being Roger's #2. Novak carved his own.
Stan is nick name and that's ok. But, to my knowledge he officially changed Stanislas to StanHe's been called Stan all his life in our french speaking part of Switzerland.
Tennis wasn't invented by Big 3 and won't be over once they all retire. They have great names. Sinner is as good a name as you could hope for without being in WWE. Alcaraz is a lovely sounding name. And Holger Rune just sounds right.
Guys, you need to let go of Federer, Nadal, etc. You got brainwashed almost too well.
I'm not sure he changed it in the Swiss national registry, rather in the tennis pro players listings. But I could be wrong... And I agree with you: Stanislas is a beautiful nameStan is nick name and that's ok. But, to my knowledge he officially changed Stanislas to Stan
Ok I know I was reading after he won AO 2014 he officially changed his name in documents. Source could be wrongI'm not sure he changed it in the Swiss national registry, rather in the tennis pro players listings. But I could be wrong... And I agree with you: Stanislas is a beautiful name

Is this really a thing?unfortunately, Carlos or Alcaraz, Holger or Rune(ah) Jannik or Sinner names just don’t have any POP as a Roger or Fed(erer) Rafa or Nadal or Pete or Andre Borg Johnny Mac etc

Meh. This is really nothing a Gillette commercial can't fix.unfortunately, Carlos or Alcaraz, Holger or Rune(ah) Jannik or Sinner names just don’t have any POP as a Roger or Fed(erer) Rafa or Nadal or Pete or Andre Borg Johnny Mac etc

You mean once in history. Obviously Fed is the most popular tennis player ever. There is none of the youngsters who can come close to Roger Federer in terms of popularity. Roger is once in 30 years player.
I was not born when Borg retired that's why I didn't say. But yeah Federer and Bjorn Borg. Even in my country with absolutely no tennis history, my dad knew about Borg and McEnroe. He was once in 30 years player. You mean once in history. Obviously Fed is the most popular tennis player ever.
I hope nobody chimes in with "but Borg was a rock star!" Borg never achieved the near universal reverence that Fed has. Nowhere close.
I think McEnroe was and is more popular than Roger. His popularity has lasted for 50 years. I don’t see that with Roger. You mean once in history. Obviously Fed is the most popular tennis player ever.
I hope nobody chimes in with "but Borg was a rock star!" Borg never achieved the near universal reverence that Fed has. Nowhere close.
You really have interesting opinions.I think McEnroe was and is more popular than Roger. His popularity has lasted for 50 years. I don’t see that with Roger.
Even Google trends 2004-now has McEnroe maintaining a consistent high level of popularity while Roger fell off a cliff in 2019 and is at his all time low.
Thanks.You really have interesting opinions.
Different experiences then. Mine was on the west coast with real mexicans, cholos, and brazilians. Not once, not even for women named Rafaella.Wow, since forever anyone called Rafael is affectionate called Rafa, I've never hear any Rafael being called Rafi.
Mac is still in the public eye through his commentating while Roger has yet to decide if he wants that kind of life.I think McEnroe was and is more popular than Roger. His popularity has lasted for 50 years. I don’t see that with Roger.

I’ll !You mean once in history. Obviously Fed is the most popular tennis player ever.

Yeah he should be very popular. Sad for Roger.I think McEnroe was and is more popular than Roger. His popularity has lasted for 50 years. I don’t see that with Roger.
Even Google trends 2004-now has McEnroe maintaining a consistent high level of popularity while Roger fell off a cliff in 2019 and is at his all time low.
McEnroe was the bigest star in tennis for about 4 years after Borg quit. You overestimate his popularity outside tennis and outside the US.I think McEnroe was and is more popular than Roger. His popularity has lasted for 50 years. I don’t see that with Roger.

Well that’s Google trends worldwide so….McEnroe was the bigest star in tennis for about 4 years after Borg quit. You overestimate his popularity outside tennis and outside the US.
“You cannot be serious?” Is more famous than anything Roger has ever done or said.Mac is still in the public eye through his commentating while Roger has yet to decide if he wants that kind of life.

Actually everyone knows McEnroe. He was part of movies as well. Anger management and such.Old people would argue that, yes. Few people under 40 outside tennis would be able to say anything about McEnroe besides that sentence. Everybody knows who Roger Federer is. I am 50 have followed tennis since my early teens. McEnroe has struggled to maintain his relevancy by mostly acting like a jerk or talking about the good old times ever since. Borg, on the other hand, has maintained his iconic status because he is – and always was – cool.
That movie is 20 years old. McEnroe is not the cultural icon outside the US (and partly Britain due to Wimbledon) that you would like to believe.Actually everyone knows McEnroe. He was part of movies as well. Anger management and such.
To me it looks like you're underestimating JMac (whatever his reputation was), He was part of Borg JMac rivalry. Hugely popular in Europe even if hes AmericanOld people would argue that, yes. The movie Anger Managment? it is from 2003.What ? It was from 2017
Ok I overlooked that, my bad. I thought about Borg vs Jmac movie. The movie Anger Managment? it is from 2003.
I live I'm Colombia and I have met many men named Rafael, not one is called Rafi, just Rafael in formal situations and Rafa to friends, the same that happened to Nadal, Rafa is just the way we call any Rafael.Different experiences then. Mine was on the west coast with real mexicans, cholos, and brazilians. Not once, not even for women named Rafaella.
You've never heard anyone called Rafi?? c'mon.
A women I dated had a brazilian nephew named Rafael. She never called him Rafa and they speak some serious slang and funny words. I know since the kid was around us a lot. Then once she watched a Nadal match, saw some fan signs, she then started calling him Rafa. No joke.
Anger Management is from 2003.To me it looks like you're underestimating JMac (whatever his reputation was), He was part of Borg JMac rivalry. Hugely popular in Europe even if hes American

RF will be remembered as ATG, by his titles , his rivalries with Nadal&Djokovic and what else? Becoming filthy rich in advertising industry thanks to being player he was ?
Retired less than a year and is literally trying too hard to stay relevant . Whenever there is big t'nt his PR chime in , release some "news ". He was here, guested ... & was
He might comment matches /having celebratory acceptance at Wimbledon year after retirement. Reeks of desperation to stay relevant, or sell shoes &apparel
I was pointing out that McEnroe is old news.Ok I overlooked that, my bad. I thought about Borg vs Jmac movie.
Anyway does it matter even if movie is from 20 years ago?
I will be honest. I haven't seen his matches yet. Most charismatic? Maybe but I don't know.Rune already has 3 news/fan threads.... he can carry tennis all by himself, the most charismatic player since Agassi.
Remember his name - Holger Rune Thread
The ATP side of Denmark has been "awful" in the Open Era, in singles. Best result is Kenneth Carlsen winning a tiebreak in AO against Stich, and of course the 3 tournaments he won. A dane just won a Grand Slam on the WTA side, and the ATP shouldn't get another Pless, so therefore remember this...tt.tennis-warehouse.com
