Alex De Minaur is at a career high of 5th in the ATP rankings

Alex is a slam quarterfinal machine. He is the modern day Rublev.
Not today. Cobolli spanked him in straight sets despite having just played a 5 set epic against Khachanov and tougher matches than Alex.

De Minaur is kinda a mess. And that’s coming from a fellow Aussie.

He will never be a slam champion or even make a slam final. He’s kinda hopeless now.

Cobolli is the next Rublev.
Mm Cobolli is better in terms of slams cause he made a slam final. ;) Rublev is much like De Minaur himself, was just always a QF staple. Dudes still never made a slam SF!

Cobolli is young and he’s already made a final and now backed it up with a Wimbledon QF too. That’s impressive. Forgot he also made the QF here last year too!

Congrats to him I guess but he seems to be leveling out at QF level these days (and most of his career) which obviously keeps him top 10 level but he hasn't won a big title yet and I don't think he ever will, He got pretty easily beat today by Cobolli and I thought grass was supposed to be a surface De Minaur was good on. Outside of Sinner/Alcaraz and Zverev, most of the top 10 just spend every other week swapping positions with each other, none of them are good enough to win a slam but are good enough to stay top 10.

Counting the days till Mensik, Jodar, Fonseca, Tien ect overtake them all.

We have the weakest Top 10 of all time. With Alcaraz off the tour injured, Sinner and the occasional Djokovic performance are the only times we see anything approaching high level tennis.
Yep. Struff being the oldest ever first time slam QFist agrees with you…

36 years of age, maiden slam QF and his run wasn’t even easy!

5 sets against Baez (who is 25, so fairly younger!)
5 sets against #28 Nakashima (who’s only 24 years old so should be winning)
Straight sets against #8 Medvedev
5 sets against Hurkacz

He maxed his abilities for sure. Dude doesn’t have the tools to win a slam though. I remember he played Meddy about as perfect as a player could and only took a set off him at the Open. That was his ceiling. He’s a lot of fun to watch though. His movement is crazy.

Struff is a great on grass so I’m not surprised actually.

Cobolli is the next Rublev.

Cobolli's comfortably better than Rublev. Rublev beat DeMinaur in 5 at the AO a couple of years ago in a match that could have gone either way. Cobolli was absolutely dominant in the important parts of today's match on DeMinaur's best surface.

Rublev is comfortably better at audibilizing his effort than Cobolli.

ADM has probably plateaued as he's completely maxed out his talent and potential which is actually quite admirable when you consider how more talented players totally sewer their careers with laziness and/or bad habits. I imagine he's going to slowly regress in the coming years but he's consistent enough to hang around the top 20 for a while.

When your biggest strength is your wheels, it’s inevitable that your peak will come in your early 20s, not later.

I think you underestimate how good Rublev is . He has won 2 big titles, beaten several all time greats and made several slam quarterfinals. A slam final does not put Cobolli above Rublev. Not even Kevin Anderson who made two slam finals and beat Federer is as good as Rublev. Fritz who has almost 40 top ten wins, made a slam final, won a masters title and has a yec final and dominates Zverev in the head to head is clearly better than Rublev although he is not levels above. You need to be someone of Fritz's caliber to be better than Rublev. I do not think Cobolli is quite on that level yet.

I still hope Rublev can turn it back around and at least make the Semis at a Major. He’s won 2 Masters, so if he could get back to that form it can happen, although it doesn’t look likely at the moment. He’s beaten a lot of the top players in the past, but he’s definitely taken a dip in form the past year and half.

ADM just doesn’t possess the natural talent his mentor Lleyton did. Hewitt had more pop to his shots when he countered, better at net, better returner etc. ADM may be a little faster than Hewitt. I think he’ll hang around the top 10 for the next couple of years if he continues to win 500 level tournaments, and make the QF at Majors.

I like Coboli quite a bit. He’s fun to watch, and has pretty clean strokes. I’d like to see him get a Masters title eventually at least.

I know a player is more than one match, but ever see Kyrgios completely monster Rublev in Miami 2022? Rublev basically hits every ball as hard as he can. His limitation was exposed by a player with natural power. Cobolli has a lot more nuance and flair than Rublev ever had.

Rublev is clearly more accomplished so far though. Cobolli has not yet surpassed Rublev

That's the key difference. Rublev was always a mindless basher with limited natural talent. He's like a poor man's Muster

Just read a post-match comment where De Minaur himself says he's been struggling mentally and kinda lost a little belief in himself and I feel kinda bad for him because he does seem like a nice guy and the realisation that your own peak is probably still well below what is needed for big titles is just a bitter pill to swallow. Every sport is like this, some players just have higher ceilings and it sucks but that's just the way it is.

ADM has to stick what he is doing .
If he can hang in there for long enough maybe some chances will goes his way and he can reach finals or win tournament.
ADM does not seem to have that extra gear to put his OPPONENT under pressure.

So that’s what’s really taking a toll on him.
I can imagine that knowing that a computer says that you're technically the 5th best person in the world at your job, yet the reality being that compared to the guys ahead of you (and even some behind you) that you're hopeless would be incredibly mentally damaging to your psyche.

Imagine how Z feels at #3, and when he was #2 as well.

He seems to be a modern day tennis journeyman of the 2020’s.

A 90’s version of Guy Forget/Tim Henman/Thomas Enqvuist types.

*Todd Martin at Mark Phillipousous made grand slam finals, so they are a cut above.

Alex is a a solid top ten tour pro, who can’t take the next step up to a grand slam final or actually winning one..

With current ranking I feel everyone seems shifted about 5-10 spots better than they are. Just seems to be the current state.

Fascinating to contrast his career-high ranking with his quotes from today-

"I'm broken inside. That's the reality. You invest so many hours into this job and so many years to have moments like these. Not being able to live up to it is truly heartbreaking. It's very hard. I won't be playing a tournament for a while. But again, they keep piling up. The goals, the belief, the dreams you have start fading away or feeling a little bit further out of reach than they once were. I feel like a couple of years ago I was definitely closer. Now I just feel like I'm drifting a little further away from those dreams. It's getting harder and harder. That's the reality."

It's particularly brutal for individual sports though. A top 10 player in a team sport can be part of a championship team that's beloved forever. No one on the New York Knicks right now is losing sleep over not being as good at basketball as LeBron or Curry, because you don't need to be to win titles as a team.

But in an individual sport if you're not #1 then you usually go down as a failure who could never get it done. The gap between 1 & 5 might as well be 1 & 500.

He needs to put some Asics shoes on. Wilson contract has killed him.

Nah, he's not even on the level of those guys. Enqvist made a slam final, Henman made at least 6 slam semis (and won a Masters I believe), and I think even Guy Forget won a Masters although he never got past a slam QF.

Disgusting era.

ill be honest i feel the same way about his career

Note that this is #5 in the live rankings. For de Minaur to break into the top five, he needs the final to be Sinner v Zverev or FAA v Zverev (or either of them v Fery). If any of Djokovic, Fritz, or Cobolli makes the final, I believe that they will be ahead of de Minaur in next week’s rankings and he will thus stay at #6 or #7 (if the final is Djokovic v Fritz/Cobolli). Even Lehecka can end up ahead of de Minaur, though he must win the title for that to happen.

Well, if Sinner beats Djokovic in the semis, De Minaur will indeed be #5 in next week's rankings. And De Minaur will at least retain the #6 ranking next week.

De Minaur confirmed as a top five player in the official rankings, come Monday.

So, that's two of the top 16 who have ranked #5 but not been as deep in a slam as Arthur Fery has.
