Alexander Bublik: I hate tennis with all my heart.

World number 55 Alexander Bublik has admitted that he “hates tennis” and only plays for the money.
In a truly shocking revelation, the Russian born player who now represents Kazakhstan said in an interview with French newspaper L’Équipe:
“I hate tennis with all my heart. To be honest, I don’t see something positive in being a tennis player. I only play for money. If there was no money, I would stop playing tennis instantly. I haven’t earned enough money, in any other case I would have already retired.

After winning his first-round match at The Open 13 ATP event in Marseille, France, Bublik added:
“I will probably die playing tennis. But it is difficult, being a professional, to play every day, always with new opponents, even if you have pain everywhere”.
“Even if you divorce, if you separate from your girlfriend, you have to play and if you lose everyone asks you why you lost. This is the part of tennis that I hate”
The 22-year-old currently has a career win-loss record of 25-29 (W-L) and has so far made $1,347,179 USD from his short career.
Given the fact that many aspiring tennis players give up due to finances and the meager prize money that is given on the lower level ATP and WTA events, Bublik’s statements are sure to annoy many of his fellow players.

Didn’t David Ferrer made the same whinge and his dad said well you are always welcome to go back to the building site.

Seriously though tennis is a tough sport as there is nowhere to hide like with so many other team sports.
Yeah I agree about tennis being a tough sport, for sure. And I think that was his coach (who used to lock him in closet too at times).

I kinda understand how he feels. I'm a professional artist and people think it must be fun. It's actually very lonely and tedious work. I have no interaction with anyone ever so I teach tennis as well just to be around happy people. Unfortunately I have no skills besides art, I'd rather do anything else.

. It's actually very lonely and tedious work.

Once you get into it, nothing is as glamorous as it seems. A Hollywood actor on set until 5:00 AM doing 100 takes isn't having much fun. Same for a musician doing take after take in a studio, playing the same songs night after night, year after year. Once something becomes your job, it takes on a completely different feel.

I’m looking for some good books that go over “famous” paintings and explain them in some detail. Do you have any suggestions?

It was his first coach, Javier Piles who said this:

From Ferrer's Wiki entry:

"Once, as a teenager, when Ferrer did not practice hard enough, his coach, Javier Piles, locked him in a completely dark 2m x 2m ball closet for several hours, giving him only a piece of bread and a bit of water. After this incident he was fed up with tennis and went to work at a construction site, but after a week he returned to Piles and asked if he could remain at the club and play tennis. Piles continued to coach Ferrer until they parted ways at the end of 2013. Ferrer has said he considers Piles to be like a second father to him."

Wish I did. I don't read about art much. For me art is about the feeling I get when I see it and the techniques used. I like mostly street/ graffiti artists to be honest. The purest form of visual art imo.

Right. You understand the techniques used because it’s what you do. I have to read about them.

If I think of something good I'll let you know.

Some artists that I enjoy are Phil Frost, Swoon, Jose Parla, Barry Mcgee, Shida, Ashevak Kenojuak, Thomas Cambell, El Anatsui, Kenzo Okada, Evan Hecox and Sid Parasinis among others.

Image search any of these artists and you'll find a lot of different styles and techniques. One thing I value is different kinds of media being used and originality. If you look at Frost for instance he is using white out, spray paint and lots of different layers with etching built in. I love the depth and thats something I crave seeing in paintings. Parla is like that too. If you like traditional landscape type stuff one guy I like a lot is Franz Bischoff. Beautiful colors and depth. He paints landscapes the way I would want to if I did them.

The only sport where you can suck and make millions. By this reason, Bublik should love tennis.

And there’s nothing wrong with this, however:

Bublik did a Q&A on reddit where he clarified what he meant, stating that he actually loves tennis, but hates competing on tour because it gets tiring.

i get the feeling alot of players partially feel this way and its why nobody has the drive to dethrone the over 30 "big 3"..

If someone is the 55th best in the entire world at what they do, they sure as hell don’t suck at that. If anything they’ve close to mastered it
He is one hell of a master being 31-31 with zero tournament wins. Just goes to show how weak tennis is when the 51st ranked player is that bad.

He wouldn't be the first player to feel this way or sadly the last.

Tennis is a REAL grind when played at a high level.

I can't even imagine what it must be like for him.

Lol no.
The 51st ranked player gets to play better/equal players than him in general. It's only reasonable that he would have a 50% win rate.
Lmao you make it sound like he is losing 50% of the time to geriatric rec players.

He is 6-0 in Challenger Tour finals and 4-1 in Future Tour finals.
Reached 2 ATP finals too. Lost both though but that doesn't mean tennis is weak at all.

There are other reasons for why tennis is weak right now.

There is something wrong with you! No one compared him to a rec player. He is a professional playing other professionals and he mediocre on the professional level.

That's quite the origin story.
I think we can all agree Ferrer is a badass.

Cannot expect all tennis players on tour love the sport whole heartedly.
People are different and are into sports for different reasons.
It's actually normal, most people don't like their jobs or working they just do it to survive. Most jobs are terrible. And usually people who love their jobs have a lot of talent, it comes a lot of easier to them. If you have talent at least you know hard work will get you somewhere so you get motivated more.

A lot of well paid people hate their jobs, but do it because they are good at it and it pays well.

Bublik isn't any different. Don't know why sports fans "romanticize" that players are in it for "the love of the game".
Cuz marketing tells them so to rake in that sweet, sweet cash.

And not Pat Cash, actual money.

aside from too much $$ in the game, i think these days you have to
start playing so early to make it on tour that theyre usually forced into it
and thats where the problem comes..
my other theory is because theyre millennials

Tennis is actually a pretty boring job. I should know because I was in the pros. I even knocked a big name out of a major once. But who was I? I will never tell you.

I think Ferrer actually did leave in his earlier years and work a 9-5 job for a while. Ended up coming back and having a pretty solid career despite not being blessed with some physical attributes like height, etc. He was also a chain smoker in his earlier days as well, which earned him the moniker, "Senor Smoke."
