Alexander Zverev: Root for him or no?!

Some people like red, some like yellow. I figured the question was innocuous enough when I asked it during his match yesterday. Didn't realize the tread was going to turn into a dumpster fire!

If what I said offended you I am sorry as I was not meaning to cause offence, I was merley pointing out that nobody can tell you what you want to like unless your mind is weak. Be strong and stand behind your own convictions and try not to overcomplicate what is simple in life as life is far too complicated already.

Absolutely a promising player, and I welcome any newcomer to the top of the ATP tour, but might be getting hyped up too much right now.
Suspect movement, WTA-serve for a player his height, and at times a bit too whiny an attitude on court - as if he thinks he's entitled to anything at this point of his career.

Still very young though, lots of time on his side for improvement.
Getting fed a couple of more bakery products by Nadal the upcoming months might prove useful.

Cannot agree more with you. Now he was spanked in the first set by Wang Chung. I think he is starting to enjoy breadsticks :D

Yeah man finger wagging is a real right of passage.

Agreed. If these two want to finger wag all day and night, they've earned it...

Zverev hasn't earned anything yet.

Smashed his racquet again after a double fault down 30-40 losing the match 6-1, 6-4 today. I remember Kyrgios did the same after the last point at Miami I think? What is up with these guys smashing after the match is over. I can see why doing that in between the match a claim can be made that it helps in venting, etc. Okay sure, whatever. But after the match has ended? You are down a stick and have your hotel room to look forward to after smashing that racquet now. I'm sure they will have more sticks come in though so probably nothing. Anyway, end rant.

I actually think NK is a much nicer dude and so much more genuine than Sasha. Just watch any Sasha presser he never answers any question and is extremely condescending.

NK is just troubled and he is probably self aware as well. Sasha just seems like a complete jerk until he grows up.

Cannot agree more

Time to embrace the arrogant punks. Time to embrace Zverev and Kyrgios.

(BTW Kyrgios is actually a nice guy and very worldly and noble.)
YES!
He's still learning to control his emotions, but what I love about him is that he does what he believes is right. If he feels he's being treated unfairly (or his opponent) he will step up and say so. Like how he conceded a point to Roger on a serve he couldn't return that was called out in the 3rd set of that extremely tight Miami match (Nadal take notes)

The gods gave him two hands and he uses them both for his backhand. I can respect that.

Kyrgios is a character and a bit of a larrikin, so a bit misunderstood at times.
ON A Zverev, fairly neutral towards him, unlikely to become a supporter but is interesting to watch and has a good game.

I honestly have no idea whether or not to root for this kid. He's got tons of talent obviously and some evident weak spots like any younger player would have. I end up wanting him to lose against underdogs (like Almagro, right now) but in his corner when he beat Tiafoe and took Nadal to 5 in Australia.

What do you all think of him?
When Federer was 20 years old I didn't really care or follow him that much, as I was more interested in Agassis' quests. Fast forward 15 years....I don't really care about Zverev as I'm only interested in Federer's quests.

Not everything is caught on camera... Saw him live in Stuttgart and he was insufferable.

However, a 2 minute search gave this:

Not going to lie. I always laugh at the f**** moron video. If Goffin said that to Mourier in MC I would have stood up and clapped. Also it was kind of a big point. BP Zverev with Mathieu serving for the match. Hewitt and Roddick were at least as bad, if not worse for example. As was Safin perhaps, and even Federer himself could be accused of being a whiny brat at Zverev's age. Not saying you're doing it here, but anybody that uses that video as some kind of indictment against the kid is trying too hard IMHO.

As far as the actual topic goes, I really don't care about him enough yet to make up my mind on whether to root for him or not, but I'll be honest, I didn't like his finger wag show against Isner. At least win something first.

Just picked the first two videos I found, my opinion is based on seeing him live :)

I was rooting for him because of his potential but to call out someone that they will meet in the Qtr finals in the next tournament? What if he gets upset by someone else? One match at a time and let your racket do the talking once you get there but not beforehand.

I think he felt robbed at the AO and wants to get back at him. Have to admire the young guy because he has a big game with a lot of weapons. I really like the humble attitude of Nadal over the years as he never took any opponent for granted.

Isner? I thought that was against Kyrgios who showboats with every step he takes.

Isner is one of the biggest cheats I've ever seen so no harm, no foul there.;)

I'm going to expand on this subject because Alex seems very interesting to me In the past I used to see him as someone arrogant and kinda cocky, but I must admit that I had seen only a few of his matches from time to time and only that, plus his physical language on court isn't the best so I rushed to judge him. It was a couple of years ago that I started to actually follow his career, you know, every match, interviews and all that, and now I don't see him as arrogant at all. Just seeing his attitudes sometimes I like him, sometimes I don't, so I think to understand Alexander better we have to go and see what others say about him, especially his brother and the people who have spent time with him.

The thing with him is that he's not very open, doesn't have social media, doesn't talk much in his interviews, is someone a little enigmatic (I don't know which other word to use) and therefore it's kinda difficult to feel empathy for him. There's a huge difference between him and other young players, I have a clearer picture of the personalities of Domi, Nick, Denis, Andrey, Taylor, even Stefanos because they're more expressive and open to share some of their personalities and are more consistent about how they behave. In my point of view, Sascha is a good and hard working boy who hasn't 100% developed his personality. Plus he sems very likely to be influenced by his environment. I mean, sometimes he looks like a kind and relaxed person, but sometimes I get the impression as if he felt the obligation to act over confident when he's in front of the media, especially before/during big matches. But all that is because he's still young, he's just making a transition between teenager and adult. In comparison to the other NextGen he has spent much more time on tour (due to Mischa's career), which is more time revolving around tennis than on himself = fewer opportunities to know himself and develop a personality outside tennis, and higher expectations from his part.

All in all, he's a great tennis player, seems like a very nice person (I've only heard good things about him by both fans and players) and the most intense with his love for tennis out of the whole NextGen and I truly appreciate that. Plus I really really like his background and healthy-obsession with the sport, so maybe you should give him another chance and jump into the bandwagon.

Very interesting point of view. I enjoyed reading it. Welcome to the forum btw. :)
