I'm a little disappointed to hear all 4 Majors have agreed to the same format for ending a 5th set.
I thought it added a little variety while still be true to tennis that each Slam had a slightly different end to it.
My favorite was Wimby's format, followed by AO, RG and finally US Open (a 7pt TB just seemed too short in the midst of a classic 5 setter).
Now all 4 will have a 10 pt TB at 6-6 in the fifth.
To me what makes the most sense is what Wimbledon did. It was a good mix of the original rules and TB.
If two players are really close let them play to 12-12 before a 7pt TB. In effect, you played another set.
This allowed the better all round player the best chance to win, added the need for complete fitness, and limit the risk of someone getting some lucky points in a TB to claim a match.
Also allowed for more classic matches to be made with virtually an additional set of full service games.
In addition, for the length of the tournament it puts more demand on those players that have to scrap their way through matches. Sure no more 32-30 fifth sets making the winner useless for the next match. But if they adopted the old Wimby rules, you have a balance, the 5 setter played in effect an extra set compared to someone who won without going to a TB.
I fear B03 1st-3Rd rounds will be coming next if not no-ad scoring.
