It's something that has perhaps been done before with Seles post stabbing.

After her terrible stabbing, then #1 Seles was absent for 2 years from the sport, when she returned, I believe she was given the co-number 1 ranking with Graf at her first event at the 1995 Canadian Open (which Seles won). At the 1995 US Open (where Seles was runner up to #1 Graf she was the 2nd seed.

Difference is Williams decided to get pregnant & give birth, Seles didn't decide to have some lunatic try to kill her with a knife. What a slap in the face this is to Muguruza, Halep etc as defending champ & number one in the world-even though the latter shows the weak mentality that runs through the tour of undue reverence to Williams, which is why most of them rarely if ever beat her.

I blame the other women-they have pretty much elevated WIlliams to deity like status with their endless praise/fawning/letting themselves be intimidated by her. The world number one even saying she should be seeded over her & Mugu the champion. Could you imagine if Evert took a year out to have a kid Martina saying she should come back & be the top seed at Wimbledon? Seles if Graf decided to do it or vice versa? And what has Williams done since she came back? Lost a doubles match with her sister, won two matches & lost to her sister & another player. Poor Maria couldn't even get into RG last year.

Wimbledon is a law unto itself and the event itself falls outside the ATP, and control by the ITF is minimal, so if they give her a special seeding it is both within their power and a sensible approach to a complicated matter.
