All eyes on Djokovic as he returns to the very place where he completed tennis

Without any question, PC will always be Nadal's court.

However, it is a very special place for Djokovic also.

On this court, he completed in 2016, his first career slam, and also the first ever NCYGS. In 2021 he became the first man in the open era to win the double career slam on it. In 2023, he became the first and so far only man to win the triple career slam, and alongside this broke the all time slam record, winning the race in the end. And finally in 2024 he completed his career long dream by winning Olympic Gold, and become the first player ever, man or woman to complete tennis by winning every single big title in the sport.

He returns today at 38 years of age, with 100 titles behind him. Win or lose, the world will be watching.

first thing first, this is not a trolling post
but i have to admit that i am now glad to see him play even though i never enjoy his playing style, which shows the existing level of matches

Yes. i wrote about it many times. the biggest moments in his career happened on his least favorite court!

RG16 - nole-slam ; first and only time that one player is holding all 4 slams simultaneously since we have 3 surfaces!
RG21 - 2nd CGS (OE record) beating rafa in the process and objectively becoming GOAT!
RG23 - 3rd CGS (definitely OE record) beating raz, slam breaking record and becoming the undisputed GOAT!
OG24 - completing tennis beating both rafa and raz!

RG22 says Hi . That wiped out the significance of RG 21 as it was basically the decider in their mini post prime series started at RG2020.
RG 16 not that significant really in all honesty. I'd argue Nadals 2010 Surface Slam a bigger achievement.
RG23 is a milestone moment for him but beating a cramping Baby Alcaraz isn't why.
OG24..the Greatest achievement in his career no question.

Impressive! Beating Rafa on his last legs at his last ever singles' tournament! What a magnificient achievement to be proud of.

In the wider context, a totally irrelevant match.

RG21 has far greater importance, because Novak's victory was not expected.

Lmao. RG2022 was billed as the GOAT play off of you recall, and not by Nadal fans. It changed everything and rendered 2021 irrelevant. Literally everything came down to one match and in truth that's what sport fans want to see. Thr very best play each other for the ultimate accolades.

Hahahahaha, playoff for GOAT status on the Paris clay where Nadal has 13 titles and Novak 2.And miraculously, Nadal won.
Really brilliant(y)

Novak's victory at RG21 decided the GOAT status.

Beating the big favorite at his favorite tournament at a stage where he had never lost before (13/13), snatching a sure slam out of Nadal's hand, preventing him from going 3-slam gap...

Sure, totally irelevant :sneaky:
Nadal.had a broken foot. How was he playing 2 days later? Nadal losing cost Tsitispas the title.
By your argument USO 2013 final is seismic. Nadal beat the huge favourite on his best surface.
I think it's time to establish some realisim as painful as it will be for Novaks fans.
The Nadal Djokovic rivalry faded post 2014 until 2018 at W. Djokovic won their indoor epic at Sw19 then utterly humiliated Rafa a few months later at AO 2019. They didn't face off again at Major for almost 2 years until the Covid FO in October 2020. Conditions suited Djokovic as it was cold and damp and nullified Rafas strengths. The final was indoors. Djokovic was a.massive favourite. Nadal humiliated him even bigger than what he suffered at AO 2019. Their rivalry was intense at this point as we saw when Djokovic at the 2021 FO beat Berretini and his infamous War Cry. He wanted revenge on Nadal. He got it, and we saw how much it meant when his wife was leaping around taunting Nadal. Djokovic later intimates he didn't buy the fact Nadal had any issue with his foot. Roll on to AO 2022 and just beforehand when Rafa did that cheeky video of him on RLA when everyone assumed he wouldn't be playing. The Slam Race was tied at 20-20-20. Djokovic clearly got baited by that and we know what then happened. Nadal goes on to amazingly win in Melbourne, the Miracle in Melbourne. Djokovic and his handlers were quick to get the message out that it was an astersiked Slam win. That was noticed by Team Nadal.
So we get to RG 2022 QF with all that backdrop above. Slam race 21-20. Realistically it was likely to be , as both suggested in their pre match interviews, the last time they played at a slam both playing well at the same time. Nadal kept going on about his foot. Djokovic dismissed that by saying something like 'it's not first time we have seen Nadal looking injured but then running around like a gazelle' in his pre match presser. The atmosphere was toxic between both camps let alone the fans. Everything came to a head that night on June 7 2022. If you don't think that match was significant then you are in denial.
Obviously now 3 years later all that toxicity has gone and there is genuine warmth. No hard feelings as in sport things get heated which is what Nadal.alluded to in his retirement ceremony.
To put the boot on the other foot, I'd also say the Federer V Nadal W2019 match was very big in their rivalry. It definitely exorcised the w2008 demons for Federer. The toxicity wasn't there but Federer needed that win and Rafa wanted it badly too. Rivalries matter. Don't underplay them or the significance

Djokovic is a 3 time RG champion. No excuses. Nadal is 2-1 up at the USO, by your argument it should be 3-0 Djokovic there.
You have either forgot about the build up tonRG 2022 after AO 2022 or just can't bear to accept it happened.

Lol, Nadal doesn't lose to Tsitsipas.
By your argument USO 2013 final is seismic. Nadal beat the huge favourite on his best surface.
USO13 does not determine GOAT status nor is it important for the slam race, nor does Novak have nearly the same status on USO as Nadal on RG. AO would be equivalent to RG
I think it's time to establish some realisim as painful as it will be for Novaks fans.
Nadal's fans need realism, something they have always lacked.
Djokovic won their indoor epic at Sw19 then utterly humiliated Rafa a few months later at AO 2019.
He didn't humiliate Nadal at the AO because Novak is the clear favorite at the AO. Nadal had no theoretical chance. But here we see the first problem, which you later try to transfer to RG22.... the media decides the narrative, so the narrative at that time was that Nadal would beat Novak at the AO, although it was clear to anyone with even the slightest knowledge that this could not happen even in their dreams. But the media had their say, Nadal is the favorite at the AO and that's the law.;)
They didn't face off again at Major for almost 2 years until the Covid FO in October 2020. Conditions suited Djokovic as it was cold and damp and nullified Rafas strengths. The final was indoors. Djokovic was a.massive favourite.
Novak was not the favorite at RG20, but again the media misled the fans. The only time Novak was the favorite against Nadal was RG15.
Nadal humiliated him even bigger than what he suffered at AO 2019.
Which tells you enough about who was the favorite and who wasn't.
Their rivalry was intense at this point as we saw when Djokovic at the 2021 FO beat Berretini and his infamous War Cry. He wanted revenge on Nadal. He got it, and we saw how much it meant when his wife was leaping around taunting Nadal.
What revenge? He beat the king of clay in his royal tournament. That's it, end of story about GOAT status.
As it is. Winning the AO solely because Novak was not at that tournament (and he was completely healthy and ready to destroy everyone on the way to the title, including Nadal)

So we get to RG 2022 QF with all that backdrop above. Slam race 21-20. It has no significance. Nadal's wins at RG were expected. His losses were not expected (except RG15 and a potential RG11 that never happened)
Novak's win at RG21 was unexpected and therefore has much greater significance for tennis and the slam race.

My arguments are very clear.

Novak does not have the same status on the USO as he does on the AO. If history has taught us anything, it is that his victories are not an obligation in the USO finals. He can win but he can also lose. He lost the first two finals when he was not the favorite.

In that USO13 final, Novak's victory was not obligatory, he was a slight favorite, but at that moment the score at USO was 1:1 between the two of them in the titles. Incomparable with RG.

AO and WB can be compared to RG in the context of the status of each player in those tournaments.

Lol what. It's maybe the biggest win of his career. 4 in a row and completing the career slam. Finally getting over the hump at RG after years of failure and crying after losing the final the year before. It's an absolutely monumental moment in his career.

On the stats sheet it probably was :p For me taking Nadal to five in 2013 was definitely probably a better showcase of his clay court abilities than beating Murray, but as a culmination of a spectacular 12 months I can certainly see how you would see it as the crowning achievement.

still the only 4 in a row since 3 different surfaces! but it is nothing and rafas 3 in a row is better... according to that guy!

he become the GOAT with that match! winning RG over rafa, who never won AO over nole, coming to 19 titles while other 2 had 20 but trailing in everything else.
just covid politics did it more complicated next year but with RG23 he solved the deal for good!

RG22 come after political imprisoning and deporting of GOAT, he got even 3 years ban of his pet slam. and rafa shamelessly won that AO while it was huge witch hunt all over MSM. in such conditions the most players would be broken for good.

Yeah maybe. But him totally dismantling Murray in the last 3 sets of that final are about as good as you'll ever see from Novak on the dirt and 15/16 Murray was pretty legit on clay (I think he reached 60% gw iirc). And then of course him winning one and losing the other makes it so even if he was better in 2013 and you can certainly make the he was that doesn't make up for him losing when we're talking about the biggest moments in his career not when he played the best. I think in terms of noteworthy big moment losses in his career it's not even the biggest in that regard either. Might not even be top 3 (11 semi (undefeated streak snapped), 12 F (going for 4 in a row all vs Rafa and CGS, and 15 F where it felt like his time and he fell short).

Murray was utter garbage in the last 3 sets lol. But Djokovic did play very well there too.

Eh that's just what it looks like when you have no options against a superior locked in opponent on a clay court. Ferrer wasn't garbage in the 13 final he just had no winning patterns and on clay there's nowhere to hide. Can't really try to bot or plus one your way out of it.

Will just say I can't believe you're defending that Murray with a straight face lol. There was a clear and obvious dip in his level. Flood of UE's, poor serving etc..

I think Murray could have made sets 2/3 a bit more respectable/closer in relation to RG 16 F.

I stupidly went into that match giving him a chance aswell. lol

What Fedal fans don’t understand: If Novak were to win RG25, it only makes Fedal’s level appear higher and makes their legacy greater that they were able to compete with the goat.

Honestly, this dude could win 40 slams and I think people will have already stopped caring.

Yeah he served poorly for sure but he was just facing someone who hits bigger and more consistent off both wings who also has the stamina edge. Not sure what you tell him to do in the rallies. He could've held up better sure but not that much better. 15 Murray was peak on clay and he was also thoroughly outgunned (flattering scoreline withstanding). If he serves a little better maybe its 2 3 and 5 or something but he just can't stand up to that on clay imo.

Not very surprising, all of these came at some of the weakest years in history. His 2016 and 2023 draws were really something else.

This is a cop out IMO. Yeah Murray was never going to win that match once Djokovic found his groundies but you're hand waving his nearly 40 UE's in the last 3 sets come on lol.

I think the number of unforced errors has very little explanatory power over what actually happens in any match honestly

Lol at the discussion here. Murray was total garbage in that RG 2016 final, even by his own slam final standards. He just totally collapsed after the first set.

RG 2016 was Djokovic finally avoiding facing even one decent opponent, after being stopped in all previous years.

So what lol. 2014 onwards was way past prime Nadal. By then he had been non stop either 1 or 2 for a solid 8 years! I dont see people slamming Connors for his record v Becker for instance! I dont see anyone judging McEnroe post 1984. When the dust settles on the Big 3 era, the debates will rage on, which im happy with as debates are fun anyway.

they are peers (and it was nole who was politically banned that rafa gain massively from) so no excuses!

So players are never just bad? Sure Murray's weight of shot is kinda mid and he doesn't have the timing to take it early consistently so he had limited options. But I think we should still penalise his performance for being worse than it could have been. Djokovic was going for history and Murray barely even made him play. If anything he just seemed tired and sloppy. No intensity in his game. If he made those errors by trying to be aggressive then I could understand but he was basically playing his normal game just badly. Considering how you've talked down much better performances in the past I find this defence of Murray quite bizarre.
