Beginning at IW’13 there were 42 consecutive M1K finals with at least one of the Big 4 making it to Sunday (last one Ferrer d. Janowicz Paris-Bercy’12). That streak ended at TRS’17 when Dimitrov defeated Kyrgios. In that 42-match streak, the Big 4 went 37-5. Counting the Dimitrov/Kyrgios final and tomorrow’s final at M-C, there have been five in just the last 15 finals. Please also consider the unexpected WTF’17 final matchup of Dimitrov vs Goffin, a matchup that ended seven straight appearances by at least one Big 4 (Davydenko vs JMDP in ‘09) and 13 of 14 such matchups (last pre-fedr final was Shanghai’02 Hewitt d. Ferrero). Big 4 (minus Nadal) was 12-1 in those finals (Nalbandian ‘05 the lone upset).
Which is better for tennis...42 processions of The Gods of the game OR fresher, new faces battling for a Tier 2 title.
Discuss or disgust. Coffee anyone?
