My 1st year of USTA just finished. I am a self rated 3.5.
My record is 9-1. I was 2-1 in singles & 7-0 in doubles. The 1 loss was a close match (3rd set TB) against a 4.0 player who successfully appealed down. All of my doubles matches were easy straight set wins (avg games against per set = 2.6) and I had 5 different doubles partners in 7 matches.
The combined record of all my opponents is 42-37.
Quick background on me:
Typical story of played in HS, then stopped playing for 10 years, then got back into it last year. When I started playing again last summer, I was getting beat by 3.0’s pretty regularly in a rec league. I kept swinging, trying to regain the strokes I used to have & finally things started to come back to me, but it took a few months. I played over the winter & continued to improve. 100% of my play was singles, I had not played a competitive doubles match in 17 years before this season. I joined the first USTA team that actually invited me, which was a 3.5 team. I had hoped to play on a 4.0 team, but I didn’t really know any 4.0 captains & I didn’t get a 4.0 invite.
So . . . would I be considered a sandbagger by TT standards? I don’t think I am – but I do kind of feel like one. I feel like the last half of this USTA season hasn’t been very competitive and I’ve been wondering if my opponents are grumbling about me. Truthfully, my wins lately haven’t been that gratifying because the matches have been so 1 sided. At first I was thinking that I’ve been playing weaker 3.5’s but like I said above, my opponents’ combined records are actually above .500.
