Am I a Sandbagger?

My 1st year of USTA just finished. I am a self rated 3.5.
My record is 9-1. I was 2-1 in singles & 7-0 in doubles. The 1 loss was a close match (3rd set TB) against a 4.0 player who successfully appealed down. All of my doubles matches were easy straight set wins (avg games against per set = 2.6) and I had 5 different doubles partners in 7 matches.
The combined record of all my opponents is 42-37.

Quick background on me:
Typical story of played in HS, then stopped playing for 10 years, then got back into it last year. When I started playing again last summer, I was getting beat by 3.0’s pretty regularly in a rec league. I kept swinging, trying to regain the strokes I used to have & finally things started to come back to me, but it took a few months. I played over the winter & continued to improve. 100% of my play was singles, I had not played a competitive doubles match in 17 years before this season. I joined the first USTA team that actually invited me, which was a 3.5 team. I had hoped to play on a 4.0 team, but I didn’t really know any 4.0 captains & I didn’t get a 4.0 invite.

So . . . would I be considered a sandbagger by TT standards? I don’t think I am – but I do kind of feel like one. I feel like the last half of this USTA season hasn’t been very competitive and I’ve been wondering if my opponents are grumbling about me. Truthfully, my wins lately haven’t been that gratifying because the matches have been so 1 sided. At first I was thinking that I’ve been playing weaker 3.5’s but like I said above, my opponents’ combined records are actually above .500.

Since you said your year finished I assuming you don't have Fall season? If you didn't get DQ'ed you weren't sandbagging according the USTA computers, but you will likely get bumped at the end of this year.

I am sure a lot of teams see a self rated 3.5 player in his late 20s playing singles and dominating- the thought of sandbagging will cross their mind:)

You were a self-rated player this year and looks like you just finished your 3.5 adult-league season without incurring 3-strikes DQ. Doesn't sound like you were sandbagging. And as others have already mentioned, you're probably just get bumped-up at the end of this year...maybe.

Sandbagging is when you intentionally lose games or attempt to play below your actual capabilities.

You could be considered a ringer but not a sandbagger, unless you're losing those 2.6 games on purpose. You should get bumped up so enjoy more challenges at 4.0 next year.

If you are playing matches and not losing games on purpose, you aren't sandbagging.

I went 12-0 my first two USTA seasons, 6-0 each season and didn't get bumped to 4.0 until this year when lots of people got bumped. Just depends on who you beat and how badly you beat them.

Actually if you bother to ask, then perhaps you're not.

The idea of the sandbagger is the guy that not only is in the wrong level, but trys to do anything they can to stay at that level. And they will never question why they are there, they'll just assume that everyone else is too weak, it's not them being too strong....

None of us are going to be pros anytime soon, so someone somewhere has to win once in awhile.

Enjoy your year of domination you'll likely be at 4.0 next year and you wont have to worry about being a sandbagger.
