Amanda Anisimova Thread [insert hype & puns of choice]

If you call Anisimova's groundies flat slaps, you and I aren't watching the same player. However, I gave a clear example when I talked about finesse and you have completely ignored it. I am talking about touch shots. Now of course she doesn't have Barty's touch but George Turner dubbed Anisimova another flash in the pan like Ostapenko, Mug and she has way more finesse than them which is evident in her slice shots. And she is only 17 so she should and will get better from here. Furthermore, Bencic again plays absolutely nothing like Sharapova nor did Sharapova play like Ostapenko who is nothing like Stephens. Like George, you are lumping together players who are not at all alike. And by the way, Sharapova won five slams, was no. 1 and also won the YEC? Unsustainable, much? Doubt very much Barty is going to have that kind of career. At best, she will be the Rafter/Novotna of this era.

How can you claim they play differently?!?! 80% of them play exactly the same way - flat groundstrokes from the baseline. No offensive slice. No net play. No variation of height, pace, or spin.

The taller ones hit harder. The shorter ones move better. But it’s all the same.

And 5 slams over a 15 year period. Not very epic. She’d easily have double that if she wasn’t a mindless ball basher.

What she would have had with variety is a hypothetical but the sheer spread of her five slams shows there was nothing unsustainable about it. Rest I don't care to comment.. If you think Bencic has no variety you haven't watched and probably assume all players with east European last names play the same way.

Nice ostrich. I’ve seen every player we listed play live at court level, but yeah I have no idea what I’m talking about.

well, I hardly see how watching players live means that you necessarily have much clue about tennis. Perhaps you do, perhaps you don't. Seems like two rather separate matters.

Like others, I can't say I really agree that much with your claims in this thread.

But in any case, this discussion is kinda meaningless. She's only 17. Both we appreciators and the depreciators should just sit back and give it some time, then we can have a talk.

The Anisim - Barty match has got to be one of the weirdest ones I've seen in my life.
I still can't believe what happened.

I know the weather conditions played a huge part in the match but still...

I tuned in with Amanda down 0-5 in the first set and thought that I had magically given her good luck, seeing her rattle off the next six games in a row and take the tie-break fairly easily.

Then she continued her surge winning the next three games to go up 3-0 in the second.

If someone told me she would then win only three more games for the rest of the match I wouldn't have believed them!
Something happened then.
Does anyone here have any analytical reasons as to what it was, other than Barty started playing better and Amanda's level dropped a little?
Anything more than that?

I think it's that but also that every time one player was behind she picked up her level and the other started tightening up and let her back in. That is, this was the pattern AFTER Barty first allowed Anisimova into the first set after going up 5-0. She had no business losing that first set but she did. Thereafter, every time Anisimova got ahead, Barty made a comeback. I could not watch the live telecast but from the highlights, the decisive points where Barty sealed the breaks were due to her playing out of her skin and less due to Anisimova making terrible errors. For example, the break point Barty grabbed to go up 3-1 in the 3rd. That running forehand winner was outrageous, she had no business making it but she did. Can't blame that on Anisimova. I thought Anisimova overall didn't do badly at all for reaching a slam semi so soon after going pro and at such a young age. The match reminded me of Fed-Henman Wimbledon 2001 where Fed had chances to win in two sets apart from the one he won and let them slip due to inexperience. As long as Anisimova doesn't get too disheartened at losing after coming so close, she should be ok. Rather, such a tough loss will help her want it more and to be more thoughtful and less erratic next time. She showed she has the game to hold on in long rallies and work her opponent off the court rather than just blasting past with pace. So she will have to learn to embrace that as her A game. It's not juniors anymore and Barty gave her a good lesson in pro tennis, whilst also showing that even the top pros are very much within Anisimova's reach so it's not like she has a mountain to climb.

Well, this is pretty terrible.

Amanda Anisimova has withdrawn from the US Open after her father and longtime coach, Konstantin Anisimov, was found dead on Monday, her agent confirmed to ESPN.

Amanda Anisimova, the 2017 US Open junior champion and the No. 24-ranked player in the world, is a rising American tennis star and the youngest player in the WTA top 100. She is 17. Her parents moved to the United States from Russia in 1998 with their oldest daughter, Maria.

After making headlines by defeating defending French Open champ Simona Halep in the French Open quarterfinals at Roland Garros in June, launching her into the top 25, Anisimova withdrew from tournaments in Toronto and Cincinnati earlier this month due to a back injury.

The Anisimova family has yet to comment on Konstantin Anisimov's death.

That is awful to hear. What can one even say. I hope she continues her success because she is fun to watch.

We have all seen young Amanda Anisimova's courage and fighting spirit. I believe she will endure this tragedy and come back again among the top rising stars of tennis.

i hope, because watch her and Kenin and them interact with their dads its gotta be tough. Granted AA has a different coach but still.

This is really terrible news for her family. It sounds like health related ? he was relatively young man so this is a terrible surprise. maybe heart attack ?

"But her agent confirmed to ESPN’s Alyssa Roenigk the devastating news. The cause of death is unknown. “I am heartbroken for Amanda, Olga, Maria and the entire Anisimova family,” Roenigk tweeted. “The worst kind of news to have to report.”"

How incredibly sad for Amanda and her family. To lose a parent at such a young age is terrible. I hope she takes the time to mourn and be with her family. And only return to the tennis court when she is emotionally ready.

Very sad loss for someone so young as Amanda. Hope it doesn't derail her career although she will need time to come to terms with this.

Chris Clarey of the NYT tweeted that Carlos Rodriguez (who formerly coached Justine Henin and Li Na) is now Amanda's full-time coach:

I wouldn't have instantly made the connection, but it's an intriguing coach/player combination to say the least. Especially given how Henin referred to Rodriguez as a father figure after her mother died and she had a falling out with her father.

Greetings, and welcome to 2020

Amanda has started off the year in style, dispatching some journeywoman named Bouchard to reach the semifinals of Auckland. Who will she play? Why, her countrywoman and winner of 23 majors, Serena Williams.

May this be a passing-of-the-baton moment for American tennis? Watch the throne.

She is going to give Serena a fight. I cant wait to see it. Which we will because she is playing serena. If amanda plays anyone but gauff or a williams we cant see it, so I am very excited to see her play live instead of a replay.

More bad luck.

Dang, she has really fallen off a cliff since the passing of her father.

Maybe that's reaching too hard in hindsight for the obvious explanation, but that really seems to have been the turning point. Since that RG semi-final run there really hasn't been anything to write home about.

I do hope she gets back on track.

Solid win. Seemed to be hitting crisp, and looked calm and collected.

7 matches in a row, Cahill on her team. Will 2022 be the rebound year?

I hope she does well but her next match will be a very tough one.
I have mixed feelings about it.
I'm a big fan of Amanda's.
But I'm also a big fan of Osaka.
Of the two I think Osaka has a much better chance of taking out Barty,
so it will be difficult to choose who I will be rooting for.

If one becomes much more dominant from the outset (Amanda or Naomi)
I'll cheer for them.

This has aged very well...
Awesome. I hope she does well!
I wish her the best as well, but I don't see this going well for her. Hope I'm wrong.
