Lest be honest this is a strange tournament. There is no Djokovic,no Murray,no Wawrinka,Murray last minute withdrawal ruined the event but still too many big names missing. Who would have been more tricky for him anyway. Who else would you like him to play seriously ???

Nobody. Federer/Nadal/Djokovic are the best players on the planet transitioning from Bo3-Bo5. It is a lot harder to beat them in a Bo5, especially when healthy and fit.

Kyrgios/Shaps wouldn't beat Nadal in a Bo5. I'd put money on it. Fred's form was never going to bother Nadal. Not this version of Kyrgios at least.

Nadal is a great opportunist and all slam wins count the same.

On paper everybody is potential threat. Only Kyrgios able beat him in slam match.
And that's on grass, quite a different task to beat Rafa on HC, even aged Rafa. As evidenced by playing good players throughout Australia and making it through almost all of them.

Not his fault all the big players got upset, withdrew, or are on the other side of the draw.

But he's got a Delpo who's firing on all cylinders in the SF, then PROBABLY Anderson in the final, both of whom possess the very type of game that would trouble Rafa on this surface, so all things considered it's not THAT easy.

But if we had to make a list of all the draws he's had over the years from strongest to weakest, I think most of us would agree that this one belongs near the bottom of that list. His opponents leading to the SF really were not that impressive.

I do think Kyrgios was a big threat (on paper of course) for Nadal, the way he beat him in Cincinnati. But as usual, he crashed early. That's not the fault of the draw though.

He could do it for sure, but I wouldn't bank on it. With how bad Federer was, it's hard to not put Rafa as the favorite vs anyone in the draw. So the draw, albeit weak, really couldn't have been much tougher. I blame Alexander Zverev and Grigor Dimitrov the most for choking. They had no excuse to choke. Their form was immaculate heading in and they became complacent and got clipped by players they should beat in their sleep. It was everyone else who blew it, not Rafa.
