American ATP tennis???

got spin?

Where has it gone? It seems that Pete and Andre are the last good american tennis players. Roddick is inconsistent and lacks performance at Slams and is dismissed as a big server only. Fish is old and injury prone and once again fails to preform when it matters most. Isner has a big serve and big forehand but is inconsistent and is just like fish and roddick. Querry is just a lost cause. Harrison is young and has a lot to look forward to, but his future in pro tennis is still unsure and blurry. Sock is just like Harrison, young and future is blurry in pro tennis. Will we ever see another American win a Slam again?

Yeah, I believe many of us are curious as to when another American will step up. Roddick has certainly been decent, but we are light years behind Spain, France, Serbia, & even the Swiss. We have no depth for a country our size. While Isner is okay, he'll never threaten the top 10.

how long has roddick been in the top 10? i'd hardly call that inconsistent.

It's pretty sad. 29 slams and counting without an American champ after winning 25 of 48 before 2003. Not likely to be snapped in the next few years either.

When the US gets to be as bad as Great Britain, Germany, and Australia then you can complain.

By inconsistent I mean failure to preform at the slams. He has made it to so may finals at faced Federer each time. If he were worth much as a player, his record against Fed would not be 2 and 20. Look at last years Wibledon, a fourth round loss to a nobody on tour. Us Open 2010, a second round loss to Janko Tipsarevic! US Open should be his best tournament! Sure he can win a few ATP 1000 events and 500 events here and there but what I meant by consistent is being able to compete with other top players at the slams and then lose to decent top 10 player in the final rounds. I'm a huge Roddick fan, I wouldnt talk about him like this if it werent true.

One word: Federer

Two words: Federer, Nadal

Three words..... you get the idea.

The horizon isn't looking good either, Djokovic will probably get better which is rather scary and exciting at the same time. Once he gets over his mental thingy against Nadal as he has done against Federer, young Americans will have it even tougher breaking through....

I'm sure there will be a good US player that will come along. I think Milos Raonic is surprising everybody.

That is because back then many countries weren't involved in tennis, now it's more international

this is similar in other sports like boxing.

The USA used to have all boxing titles. now there are many europeans and asians who also hold titles. It was basically an american championship back then.

of course many american fans don't acknowledge that internationalisation. they just say today's americans suck and that their heros would still dominate today and that the american dominance was not caused by the lack of popularity of the sport in many other countries back then.

Seriously the foreigners should get out of the sport and be gratefull we allow them to hold tournaments outside the US. This used to be a great sport but America got bored with it and now the foreigners have ruined it.

Going by your avatar I feel forced to agree with you. The last thing I need right now is to be shot to death by a State Department helicopter gunship.

Not quite every week since 2002. Yeah, so bloody inconsistent.

Not buying this part of your argument either. Going deep at a slam is an accomplishment in itself. Andy has made it to the SF or better in slams and tour finals 11 times. He has had some excellent finals against Fed where he has made Fed play some of his best tennis. His inability to beat Roger, possibly the best player of all times, hardly constitutes a glaring weakness.

Your being sarcastic right?

No.

The USA has been nice enough to let foreigners play and the are ungrateful for it. We are better than the rest of the world and they need to recognize that if they are doing well at a sport its because we let them.

you do know sports came before america did right??

I wouldnt call Roddicks H2H against Federer a mark of inconsistency....actually I'd call that remarkable consistency! LOL tennis is all about match ups, and none of Roddicks game plans match up well against Fed. When he slices and plays defense, Fed controls the baseline and blasts winners at will. When he tries to come in, Fed always has the pass (AO 07, USO 06). When he plays aggressive from the baseline (Wimby 04, 09, USO 07) Fed just absorbs the storm until theres an opening and then pounces.

99% of the time Roddicks gotten passed the QF of a slam, he's run into Federer in either the semis or final, and every time he's lost. I hate playing the "what if" game, but if Roddick had not run into Fed in those matches, we'd probably be talking about a guy with atleast 5-6 slams and these discussions about the downfall of american tennis would probably not exist. Oh well... thats why "what if" is simply "what if" and nothing more....

I'm proud of Roddick for how he has carried the flag for the american men over the last decade. Whether he admits it or not, thats got to be a huge burden to bear year in and year out. I think he's gotten the most out of the abilities that God gave him and then some, and as an american and as a fan who realizes that life could be a lot worse than our boys not owning 19 of the top 20 spots in the game, there's not much more you could ask for than what Andy has given us over the last 10 years.

What if he is from america?

Regardless...i think your a great canidate for getting banned.

His location says Toronto and he made an anti-American comment.

And why would I get banned. I have not insulted anyone nor threatened anybody. Being a wise ass maybe but in no way is that banable.

I would say tennis is no more internationalized than the 90s...America just doesn't focus on tennis anymore, which is sad. So much money wasted on college football....

I don't think this thread take a lot of your spaces especially you don't own this forum.
