Reading the American media websites, one would think Sloane Stephens has the credentials to being a grand slam champion. However, closer examination, I notice a few things.
Sloane is definitely progressing wells, semifinals of Australia, fourth round French Open, quarterfinals of Wimbledon this girl is clearly the leader of the younger American female tennis players. Sloane is also beating her peers Monica Puig, Laura Robson, ect. so she's showing she's got mental toughness and game.
However, I feel the USA media are a bit cruel, they desperately want a young female tennis champion, but they don't seem to realize it takes time.
I think Sloane and her mother need to step back a bit, she should trying winning the smaller WTA tour titles first.
Maybe, in a few years time, Sloane is going to become a champion BUT this girl has NOT WON A WTA EVENT.
How can the USA media expect Sloane to become a slam champion when she hasn't even had a WTA tour victory?
Things, happen in steps in tennis, first Sloane has to prove she can win WTA Tour titles, starting with smaller events, then progressing to winning bigger events. If Sloane can do that, and start beating the top women MAYBE then the USA Press can expect her to win a slam.
But right now, Sloane is VERY FAR AWAY from winning a major.
I think Sloane has let the American media hype get to her head, she has a long way to go if she wants to become a top player and a grand slam champion. Sloane seems scared, almost terrified, when the USA media compare her to the Williams Sisters. On the one hand, I can understand it, Sloane is her OWN PERSON, just because she and Serena are black women she is an INDIVIDUAL. Sloane seems to be doing a bit better with the pressure from the USA media, but I feel the USA press needs to back off a bit.
