Analysis of Commentators, Best and Worst- Sending to ESPN

All our dutch commentators are dumb and ignorant, threat you like you are an idiot. They constantly tell you who Djokovic is again, that Ivo Karlovic is a tall lad, that Robin Soderling had this thing with Nadal in Wimby 2007, not just once but constantly. Just acting like you never ever watched tennis before.

I actually like Mats Wilander at eurosport. Also like Martina Navratilova on livestreams

agree, personally i turn the sound off - so i can't listen to commentry.

I like Daren: Very professional

Don't Like Fowler: He looks like a brat to me always trying to attack Gilbert for no reason when he is an ignorant about tennis if compared to him....

Don't Like Carrillo: for all that is said already

Dick Enberg: Not too much about tennis and he makes a lot of mistakes while commenting...

Mary Carillo absolutely stunk during the Venus match. She acted as if she wanted to cry b/c Venus was losing. Not objective at all. Oh well, ESPN always kisses the WS's asses. It's part of their paychecks.

She used to be a lot better than she is now. I guess my views are too biased because of her role in Real Sports. She's pretty much the only real journalist working for ESPN Tennis.

Milan, I agree that those British and South African commentators are the best. I also rather like John McEnroe, partly because he himself accomplished so much in the sport.

McEnroe is by far the best commentator (and has been for 10+ years) -- his ability to talk about the game within the game is unparalleled (i.e. when someone is getting tight yet not choking, hitting balls over high vs. low parts of the net, when a player's tactic during a point surprises his opponent)...he was the first male commentator who was also superb covering women's matches.

When she's with him, Carillo complements McEnroe very well...on her own, she's annoying.

I don't see how any one can stand Navaratilova. she talks incessantly.

I respect her tennis career tremendously, but she needs to learn that it's OK to take a breath once in a while.

Carillo is AWFUL, so is McKay.

Chris Fowler is also terrible.

I try to like Pam Shriver but she is just so dorky. She makes a lot of dumb, unnecessary comments. Leif Shiras is also becoming a master of the dumb, obvious statement.

Both McEnroes, Cliff and Cahill are pretty good. Gilbert is tolerable, sometimes he says something worth hearing.

goodall and koenig are really amazing commentators.

they know their stuff inside-out and are not overly biased or polar in their commentary.

the international feed for the TMS used to have fantastic commentary.

in the US, espn commentators gilbert and cahill are the two closest, but i still much prefer koenig and goodall.

pmac and drysdale are next.

after them its all garbage

Agreed - and I think it's because they know they are doing commentary for several ESPN feeds worldwide (in English)... can't comment about the quality of the other ESPN commentary teams in other languages.

Some poster said earlier (too lazy to check back who) that it was understandable if ESPN was biased because it's American... I'm not sure if you get different commentators on ESPN North America, but certainly on the English service of ESPN Latin America (which serves the Caribbean), I don't detect any particular bias, and I suspect it's the same for ESPN Asia and so on.
