Andreescu Wins 2026 ITF W35 in Bradenton

I searched and didn't see a thread about this, but Bianca Andreescu, who's ranking is down to #228, decided not to seek an Australian Open wildcard or try to play the qualifier tournament for her latest comeback from injury. Instead, she entered an ITF W35 event down in Florida this past week.

She was the #1 seed and had a three setter in the first round against a former college player from the University of Kansas. But after she won, she rolled through the rest of the draw in straight sets to get the title.

I think her plan is to play some more ITF tournaments in Florida over the next couple weeks. I think this is probably a good idea, in a similar manner to what Agassi and Bencic did in the past to reboot their careers when they were down.

Hopefully, these wins at a lower level will help build her body and confidence up and we'll see her back in the top 20 again soon.

Andreescu is still only 25, which seems crazy to me. I would have thought 28. I know she was young when she won the USO, but still, it all seems SO long ago. Of course everything pre-Covid seems like it was decades ago.

it would be nice if she can make a comeback but I'm guessing she will have continued troubles. A) she absolutely strikes me as one of those players who would have been her best at the beginning of her career and would not ever be able to make it back to that younger level, which also aligns with her style of play (unless it's changed since I've last seen her play which was probably 1-2 years ago)

B) the way she moves is going to cause repeated injuries. Look at her feet... they turn inward (sickle). I believe it's a (bad) habit she's had since she was young. This will consistently result in ankle, knee and potentially hip and back issues--which interestingly enough are a large majority of the injuries she's already been dealing with, ie it tracks.

By winning the Bradenton W35, she's moved up from #228 to #192 in the rankings. More importantly, she's won 5 matches in a row, gained some confidence, and got herself an ITF title to start the year. All good things. If she had gone to Australia and lost in the AO qualifying, she wouldn't have gained much.

This next week, she's the #2 seed in the Weston W35. I'm hoping she keeps the winning streak going.

Looking ahead, after the Weston W35 this upcoming week, it looks like Andreescu is on the acceptance list for the Vero Beach W75 the following week, and then the Orlando W50 after that.

I know that this is the Futures/Challenger level for the women, but it looks like there are numerous ladies in the #100 to #150 range in those two upcoming tournaments, so it's not like this will be an easy walkover. Still, it would be pretty epic if Bianca got on a roll.

I meant only the injuries. Every player is allowed to choose the comeback they are comfortable. I dont believe she is short in confidence generally with her ability. It is the injuries and fragile nature of her body that is an issue.

This is actually a good route for her.

By playing more matches at a lower level and a lower intensity, she'll slowly build up her general fitness and get matches in her legs. So that when it's time for her to return to the WTA, she isn't being thrown back in at the deep end. Hopefully it's reduce any chances of relapsing.

Bianca won the W75 tournament in Vero Beach today!

That puts her start to the year at a 13-1 record, with 2 titles and a semifinal showing. In that stretch, she added 124 ranking points and moved from #228 to #162.

Most importantly, this has to be a boost to her confidence mentally and physically.

My practice partner! She has moved and is pro now but we beat up on each other a lot in 2024. I was hoping she would win but really happy for Bianca too, hope she keeps going up and regains her place at the top of the game.

Just lost in the 2nd round of qualies at RG for the 2nd year in a row...its a long road back.
