Andrey Rublev appreciation thread

Not sure if there's already a thread like this but Rublev is under the radar one of the most impressive young players. Barely 20 and ranked 39, if he wins Doha he'll be ranked 29. Could easily end 2018 in top 10.

I think he's an interesting player and worth watching. Other young players generate more buzz but then don't produce consistent results.

Typical basher. Won't come to net under any circumstance unless physically forced to do so.

**** his grunting. Horrible. I don’t mind Djokovic and Nadal, but for some reason his grates on my ears like nails against a chalk board

I like him a lot because he's aggressive and has a great forehand, but he's none too pleasing on the eyes and ears. Oh well, can't have everything with the younger guys these days.

I know this is appreciation, but I really don't like this guy. If you see the slow motion replay, every shot is hit like a last resort and he always has this look like he is about to cry. No disrespect, he might be a good guy, I just don't find it entertaining to watch his matches.

2nd to Zverev in that regard.

Yeah true. Which made the listless performance against Rafa even more head-scratching.
Worst possible match-up at this point IMO. Rafa's extremely heavy rally balls makes it impossible for him to stand inside the baseline and dictate, which is basically his only gear. I saw some stat on how many rally balls he took inside the baseline even against Rafa, can't remember but it was tactical suicide.

Tactical suicide by being too aggressive is the only honorable tactical suicide. Tactical seppuku

Yeah, imagine that's gonna limit power
Well, there's been found "no significant relationship between clavicle length and any measure of throwing performance,"* so I doubt it should matter very much to the throwing-like movements of tennis, and to my knowledge it's predominantly an aesthetic trait (and hence of big interest to muscle builders). Purely anecdotally, in my experience some of the biggest bombers in boxing have/had relatively unimpressive clavicles as well.

Ok. Interesting. I wasn't really thinking about serve per se, but more about the groundies which are less a about the shoulder and more about angular acceleration of the trunk, and I think that if the the radius to develop those forces is smaller it's gonna be harder.

But yeah, anthropometry of tennis players, interesting thing

Knew he was playing into Nadal's fans, but didn't try anything else because he knew he'd lose anyway, so why bother?
Hoping to see improved mentality this year. So far so good, saved a match point to get to the final.

He injured his back last year and still hasn’t found his top level again yet. He’s had some decent wins here and there, though. Hopefully he’s back to the top soon.

i think maybe bashers have a tough time overcoming a back injury. specially one so young who hadnt really developed any nuance to his game

Seems like he could develop his game with more variety, constructing points better etc

But watching highlights from Dubai, I'm a sucker for that FH. Count me in the fan club.
