he played well the last two sets today but this thread is dedicated to his weight. we've been talking about his fh recently and one of the more interesting things to come out of it was that his fh lacks pace because his movement is slower. this partly due to his weight. so i wondered how heavy he was compared to players of similar height and these are my findings:

Andy Roddick 6'3, 192lbs

James Blake 6'1, 183
Roger Federer 6'1, 187
Rafael Nadal 6'1, 188
Novak Djokovic 6'2, 176
Andy Murray 6'3, 175
Pete Sampras 6'1, 170

That's at least an average of 10lbs Andy has on his competitors. And other guys like Rafa and Roger are taller than they're listed. So as you can see, Andy needs to lose some weight to improve his movements and groundstrokes.

if you have ever seen Andy Roddick in person and stood next to him, you'll know where all the weight is ... this guy is hugh... big wide shoulders,he's football's pros size... just find some pictures of him next to Jimmy Conners and you'll see the difference....

Eh, I actually think he's fine at his weight right now. Like SoCal10 said, his frame allows for more muscle...he isn't really built to be lanky or lean if you look at him. His arms are ripped, but he's got a bit of a belly going (compared to other players, I mean). He can probably stand to lose a little fat, but he should keep his weight up around 190.

that bit of a belly is not what it seems... if you have seen him with his shirt off,it's all six-pack and more... not beer belly stuff...

Yeah. He's a good reader, so he gets to a lot of balls. But when he's playing a guy who's strokes are hard to read (who holds the ball well), Andy is made to look pretty slow....at least by professional tennis standards.

The kid is big, strong, and is in pretty solid shape overall.

Being 5 lb heavier than Federer is proof that he's overweight?

Accept it, Roddick is not fast - no matter if he loses 25 lbs, Djokovic, Fed and Nadal will still be faster.

If Roddick had better ground strokes he wouldn't need to be faster - as it is, Roddick is a very good pro tennis player, used to be number 1 in the world, but never was a truly great player and never will be.

The US needs some new off spring to produce better tennis players - as it is, they won't have a number 1 player for a long time, at least 4-5 years, maybe even longer than that.

He only weighs 5 more pounds than Federer... really?!?

Serena is thin and Fed is fat

Come on guys - Roddick is not overweight by any standards.

I think you get all screwed up over there because of how most of the population look like.

I don't think Roddick is overweight at all. Anyways if he lost weight he would lose pace on his serve so it wouldn't be a wise move on his part if he decided to lose some extra weight.

thats just it though, his groundstrokes wont be any better unless he gets faster somehow ...when hes there for a ball he can still rip it even now,as witnessed a few times last night

Roddick is a great player, but he is slow and heavy compared to most. To be a great tennis player you have to be a genetic freak. If he was faster naturally, he could carry this weight, but Serena Williams he is not.

The ATP also lists Nalbandian at 175 and Fish at 180.

I doubt their stats are that accurate - kinda like the PGA website used to list John Daly as 180 (the weight he was when he turned pro) when he was probably over 250. That website now says Daly is 220, but he publicly said his weight is over 260.

Roddick is very heavy on his feet. Some players seem to glide around the court, Andy is more like a train wreck.

roddick has lead foot, but at 6 3 being Under 200 lbs just shows he's in good shape.

and no, federer and nadal are not taller than listed. never seen either up close, have ya?

that seems about spot on. djokovic seems taller than 6 2, though. could be his skinny arms and legs

yes, i dont know how updated those stats are. federer and nadal are often said to be taller than their listed heights by commentators so are probably heavier; but then that goes for andy as well.

when andy was younger and skinnier, he had his serve. losing weight will not affect its power.

I have and seen him in practice. Roddick has a big butt and he has thick thighs and legs( don't man to turn you on SS). Surely he is not one of those people that move lightly on their feet.

if you call this overweight then i am a real pig...

Well, I think Roddick is just fine at his weight.

I am not at all an AR fan but I feel he has been trying to change his game too much the past few years, evolving towards an almost pusher-like style of game. He looks a lot better when ripping groundies like he did in the last sets last night.

I think time has come for him to play his own game. He has a strong serve, his backhand is quite reliable and for such a big guy he brings a lot of balls back. His forehand has been too spinny lately. He should on both FH and BH try to keep it in for a few balls and then go for a flat winner IMO. His slice does not look good but it is rather effective. His net game will never be about finesse but maybe he does not need that.

So I think Roddick should be more offensive and go for his shots. That is the only way he can beat the top. He has to stop messing around with his technique. At his age he has to use what works for him.

Roddick is listed at 195 in ATP tennis and right now he is probably closer to 200 as John McEnroe mentioned a few months back.

He's not overweight.... he's just not that good a player

and by the way, most heights and weights listed online are not accurate

Ironically, if he were a football player, NFL scouts would describe him as too light.

This was quite a few years ago... back when he was sponsored by Reebok... and possibly 1 in the world?!

He isn't heavy from fat.
He's heavy from packing on a lot of muscle nowadays.

I truly cannot believe you called Roddick overweight. You obviously have not seen him in real life close enough to appreciate his size. He's a huge guy. He's not fat in any way, he's muscular. I'd like to see you compared to Andy Roddick.

I think Roddicks new super loose shirt makes him look heavier than he really is.

I don't think he's fat, but he just isn't fast compared to most of the other top 10 players.

Roddick and Fish are both well over 210 - those weights have not changed since they turned pro year ago.

what is the size of his shirts XXXL?

OP, stupid opinion of the 08 US Open period. How idiotic. People actually post these type comments which are absurd and expect people not to take out a flame thrower and blast you? Thread is useless without pics of your 8 percent body fat physique. Best part is the people that say this type of stuff probably couldnt get ONE SINGLE POINT off a top 10 player!

Andy is the right size. He's just got a big frame.

Look at guys like Boris Becker, Andres Gomez, Moya, Haas, Ljubicic, Canas, Enqvist, Rafter, etc. The list of big guys goes on and on. They've all managed to do pretty well with their careers.

As to the above post about Serena weighing 160. . . ha. Let me go get my supermodel wife and tell her to stop counting our billions. Serena might weigh 160 from the waist down, but that's it.

I found this information on the Bejing olympics site,so I suppose it is the most up to date. Andy Roddick of course isn't listed, but since some of the figures vary from those on the ATP site it is very possible that his have also changed.

Federer 6'1" 176lbs.

Nadal 6'1" 176lbs.

Djokovic 6'3" 176lbs.

Murray 6'2" 183lbs

Blake 6'1" 183lbs

Nalbandian 5'11" 174lbs

He's not overweight.... he's just not that good a player

and by the way, most heights and weights listed online are not accurate

Roddick has 1 US Open title and 3 more final appearances in Grand Slam events (lost to Federer in all 3 times).
If he's "not that good a player," then there has been only a handful of good tennis players in the history of mankind.

if you use bmi calculator 6'3 192 would be equivalent to 6'1 182lb. since he is 6'3 he weighs a little more than players who are shorter than him but in actuality players like nadal and federer weigh more for their height.

Roddick is an animal. He's not fat, he just doesn't have the quickest speed like others have mentioned.
