Andy Murray: "Best tennis is ahead of me"

Britain's Andy Murray says he hopes he is yet to reach the best part of his career, after beating Milos Raonic to win his second Wimbledon title.

"I still feel like my best tennis is ahead of me, that I have an opportunity to win more. Everyone's time comes at different stages. Hopefully mine is to come."

After very convincing two weeks at Wimbledon and excellent consistency in the clay and grass season, he should be positive like this. I am glad that he is hungry for more and that he doesn't see his age as any kind of an obstacle.

Now really is his time. Fed and Nadal in decline (not that still can't have their moments), a small chink in Djokovic's armor (though I suspect he'll still be VERY tough to beat in the next few years), and no youngsters establishing themselves such that you'd pick them over Murray.

I believe that the guy has got a good chance to rack up a few more slams in the next couple of years, especially if Lendl is motivated to stay onboard.

It cannot be measured but there is something about having him around that makes Andy pull it together in the big moments.

The pretenders to the throne and new hotness Thiem's and Zverev's of the world will have to wait a few more years to win the big events because they sure aren't getting by the Muzziah (and Djoker) on the big stages of our sport anytime soon.

I like that attitude!

Press statements are just that, nothing more. We've seen it millions of times being inaccurate and sometimes to be true. I would put more emphasis to Raonic since he is the guy who is really putting some effort in his game and has expanded his team a lot (in order to become No. 1).
Even with such serious approach, Milos could fail, some would say chances are bigger for him not to succeed. But it will pay off somehow, maybe not now but in 2, 3 years.
Andy needs much more than statements of selfbelief. He is kind of close to everything he is hoping for, but we all know he hasn't got any special ace in his sleeve that we haven't seen so far. He is 29, he tried everything, yet biggest obstacle needs to go away by itself if he wants trophies that he thinks should be in his gallery.

But for that untimely MTO by Novak in 2014 FO, Murray would have 3 different majors by this time.

Anyways, I think the time is prime for a change in the sport

OP you're suppose to put some sort of made up implication in your title for these threads like "Andy Murray's veiled threat to his rivals"" or "Andy Murray pushes over small child"

Something is wrong with you. So who do you think should be winning in order for this not to be a 'mug' era? Please tell us.

Yes if the mug era keeps mugging. Djokovic gets slower...Murray will win a lot more free slams just like Djocake.

But since both he and Novak are 29 (OMG, 29 ) now, Federer and Nadal are done, while the next generation is the weakest one ever, that means the next 10-12 Slams won't be won by anyone. :D

It is indeed contradicting when someone says that every player is done and won't win any more. Someone has to win those Majors.

Novak said the same after losing USO 13 final and people laughed saying its all downhill from there. Same people will laugh at Murray now.

after he won Wimbledon2013 murray said he did'nt really know what to aim for, then he was injured and fell away abit, lendl left to see his kids and have his own hip operation etc..

el muzzo has clear goals again which is why lendl rejoined. win majors, win world tour final, try and become world no1 rank.

No. of slams the swiss ballerina GOAT has won in mug era (last 6 years)...

What does that tell about the GOAT?
He is 35....so one of the mugs. 25 year old Federer would mop up this bakery tour and Peak Djokray.

I like Murray's attitude. Better than his "wait for Novak's level to drop" comment at the start of the year.
Murray is consistently better than the rest of the field and made good use of his opportunities. But I'm not convinced that he has turned the table on the Big 3.
Novak wasn't fully motivated in London after winning 4 GS titles, WTF, and 5 ATP 1000 in the previous 12 months. Fed was coming back from a knee and a back injury. Rafa is tending a wrist injury. Let's see what Murray can do when the Big 3 play healthy.

which is when?

you think fed is getting any younger? he's 35 in a few weeks

rafa has been awol since early clay season leading up to the french, no one knows what's up with him or if he's ever gonna come back strong

the only realistic obstacle he has is probably djoko

Nadal had a wrist injury early clay season that may be corrrected. If he's able to get back quickly and serve without issue (big ifs), he has a chance to get back on track quickly. Monte Carlo was good, no?

If Federer didn't injure himself in the fifth set there is a little doubt he'll be quickly in good form. North American hard courts are Fedasaurus's prime hunting grounds.

A healthy Fed, no need for a younger one, is a big threat to Murray. Fed overachieved in WB considering how little he had played due to injuries. He should be in a better shape this fall.
Rafa has ALWAYS dominated Murray. As long as he is not getting surgery for his wrist, it shouldn't sideline him for too long.

Not QUITE always. He lost to Murray at 2008 US Open and 2010 AO and has been on the receiving end of some pretty brutal beatdowns from him eg. 2011 Tokyo and 2015 Madrid.

It's domination, not humiliation. 17-7 overall, 7-2 in GS (including the last 5 times and only 2-0 in FO), 2-0 in WTF, 8-3 in ATP 1000.
This is more than intermittent domination.

Press statements are just that, nothing more.
Exactly. Also known as 'saying the right thing'.

He probably made similar statements after the USO and Wimbledon wins - but he didn't string together majors after those wins.

We'll see what happens on court. Will his 2nd serve continue to improve? Will he get more aggressive with his FH? Start sneaking into net more?

Yes, but don't forget his first 2 Slams were won by beating Djokovic. If you can do it...not once but TWICE.......?

Nole was burned out for a couple seasons after near perfect season in 2011! He barely held onto #1, releasing it for a while to Nadal in 2013, but has had huge lead to stay in front of all comers for the foreseeable future! Even if Murray took USO, he'd need a near collapse for Nole to drop close to anyone in the point's race! :p ;)

Yes, but when Murray REALLY sets his heart on achieving something and has Lendl in his corner and is not thwarted by back problems requiring surgery he quite often achieves it. Let's watch this space shall we? :)
