Andy Murray returns to Challenger Tour

This is where his love for tennis is really tested.

Imagine being ranked 250 in the world slugging it out in the Futures and Challengers in some obscure towns and then you get to play Andy Murray.

Let's hope he gets a couple of wins there

At this stage of his recovery, a win or 2, even at Challenger level, would be a major boost for his confidence. Playing at Rafa's academy might well bring back happy memories of the days when he trained in Spain as a young teenage wannabee. It will be like going back to his roots and starting all over again. :)

Let's hope he doesn't ruin his hip or other parts of his body. Perhaps he should just concentrate on doubles on the ATP tour, as it seems very unlikely he could ever win another slam or important singles tournament, at this stage of his career.

Didn't Andre Agassi also play on the challenger tour when his ranking fell to like 141 due to his personal issue and marriage problem with Brooke Shields in 1997, 1998? He won 1999 FO and USO, lost to Sampras @Wimbledon. Agassi finished #1 in 1999. It is not impossible. If Agassi could do it, so can Murray.

Well, Agassi wasn't trying to recover from a damaged hip, his problems were emotional (as you point out) but I take your point and certainly hope that Andy can follow that great example however unlikely it may seem right now.

Andre, as I recall, did not have a serious physical problem. Andy may feel fine now, but playing tough singles matches could possibly cause his hip problem to return? Hopefully, I am being overly pessimistic.

I was fortunate to meet Murray in person in 2015 at a company sponsor event and talked to him for 15 minutes. Very like-able guy. I saw Murray again this month at @CitiOpen. I really hope Andy Murray can come back and be the player he once was.

They are licking their chops at a free win.

It's fun to watch the ATP-level Pros that are recovering from injury plays in Challenger. Specifically, fun to notice the difference between their levels and mainly Challenger players. Better serves, returns and usually they hit with a lot more spin and net clearance vs the Challenger players that hit hard, but in general less shape.

Hope Murray does well!

Even Agassi if i remember correctly started over from the Challenger. I think it's a good approach, Andy is not ready for the big guys right now, he needs to play play play.

That's why Nishikori did... worked well, I think?
Murray might get a bit of extras from joining Rafa's tourney, too... plus premium training resources, I bet.
Might work well for the Rafa Open too, gathering interest!
I would not mind a bit of tennis in Mallorca myself, come to think of it. :D

Agassi did challengers too:

Nishikori recently started from Challengers after another injury.
If I remember well, Monfils or Tsonga as well started from Challengers after some recent injury.

Warmup first round (challenger qualifier lol) and then some good matches like he was looking for, guys just outside of the top hundred. Gombos, Stakhovsky, Rosol , Sela, those should be good tests. Hope I can find a way to watch some of them!

It still hits me how far and how fast Andy has fallen in the last 2 years. This time, only 2 years ago, he was the world #1 player. Now he can't even get seeded for a Challenger!!! :(

I mean, that's normal after taking more than a year off. He basically doesn't have a ranking right now.
