Andy murray says nadal might be the second greatest ever if not the greatest...

Agree that Nadal could potentially go on to be the greatest of all time by surpassing with Federer has done?

I don't think anyone will argue that this is possible.

lol wut?

Nadal has alot of time on his hands, hez only 24. If he can start winning 2 slams a year instead of 1 then he obviously has a chance.

It all depends on the fitness of Nadal, for years now people have been saying he will only be able to play how he does for a fairly short time frame, and that still might be the case. If he can be lucky from now on healthwise then finishing his career as the second best player of all time is easily within reach.

See, OP, he doesnt say "if not" the greatest. Stay within the source at least.

What you suggest in your title is different from actual quote.

The point is if not greater than federer and since hez considered GOAT over here so I dont think it's misleading...

It's known that Murray prefers Nadal over Fed.

In the past, he has told that they are the two greatest players of all time.

Key word Murray uses is "might". And he has a point. Nadal just turned 24, and already has 7 slams. If he could get that tally up to 12 - 13, with one of them being a USO, Nadal would certainly be part of the big group with Sampras, Borg and Fed. If he had 12 overall slams, at all 4 events, you could make an argument over Sampras. If he can end the next 2 years no 1, you could make an argument over Borg (largely due to Borg's inaction, but thats irrelevent), thus putting him 2nd after Fed.

Of course this is all a might. But Ive said this before, if you have won something once, you can win it again. Dont rule out more AO's and Wimby's from Rafa

I doubt Rafa will catch up to Fed. But, he seems to be playing less recklessly on those time-bomb knees of his, and he's only one US open from a career slam. Of course, Sampras was only 1 Roland Garros from one, too...and a while ago, so was Fed.

I get the sense that Rafa is highly aware of the flaws and strengths of his game, and constantly working to improve it; thus, I feel he may age a little better than we anticipate.

Tough time for Murray, to catch in all the 130 years history of tennis exactly the 10 years with the two greatest players of all time. Or is it just a hyperbole to excuse himself?

C'mon Murray, this is a WEAK ERA. Get your act together and win those slams.

You are TOO GOOD not to win a slam !

murray is a big ******** just like nadal is a big *******.
both murray and nadal constantly defend their respective idols at every opportunity.

but rafa does have a chance to get into that top tier of borg, laver, sampras and federer.
but he will have to be healthy which is a BIG BIG IF, and will have to be very consistent on all surfaces.
he cant get slaughtered like he did against del potro or tsonga if u want to be an all time great.

Lol is this a joke? Yeah this is a weak era with the GOAT playing, and also Nadal who will go down highly likely in the top 5 of all time.

Such towering humility from Andy, knowing deep down that he himself is the greatest barring none !

Vamos Andy !! Go Scotland !!

Basically Andy is trying to help explain why he still has no grand slam titles, by reminding us how extra difficult it is right now (compared to other times) because of all the GOAT action.

Get over it Andy, didn't stop Djokovic, Safin, Del Potro...

Although I am a Murray fan, I would prefer if he remains honest. Yeah, we have "greatest of all time" who has a losing record to Murray, and Murray beats the other great on hard courts.

Step it up Andy, there is nothing special about either Federer or Nadal, you are more than capable of beating both of them.

i don't think rafa's talent is good enough on a hard court to win many more slams. he gets injured too often on the stuff. fed hardly did. fed is a king of fast hard, esp at the USO where it is his house. del po is gone.

and on grass, as long as fed is playing it is still an even match. fed said he will play till 35.

He can play until 48 if he wants. It doesn't mean he'll still be winning! Rafa is more than good enough to win several more slams on either grass or hard. Just wait and see.

i love rafa but rafa is a utter mug on hard courts, especially US open hardcourts.
the guy looks like a deer in the headlights.

it's in Andy's best interest to fluff up Rafa because he knows Rafa is a great match up for his game. So when he beats Rafa, he is beating potentially the best player of all time. That Andy. Smart.

Meanwhile in 2018...

Good post! Rafa is no mug on hard courts. He played really well on hard courts last year. His hard court record alone is up there with some of the all time legends of the game:

4 slam wins and another 4 finals
8 M1000 titles
Olympic Gold

That is up there with entire career achievements of guys like Villas & Courier and in only just behind the entire career achievements of guys like Edberg and Becker.

Basically all we’ve heard for the past decade is how Rafa can’t do this or Rafa can’t do that. First we heard that he’d never win off clay. Then came Wimbledon 2008. Then we were told that was a fluke and that he was a joke on HC. Then he won 4 HC slams. Then we were told numerous times that he was Finnish and wouldn’t hold up physically after 30. Bla bla bla...

The people assumed all those things in Federer's peak and presumably were going on about it from that perspective (that until Federer is at his peak none of this will happen).

They were right.

Well then.....

Rafa can't tap dance.
Rafa can't do differential equations.
Rafa can't juggle flaming bowling pins.
Rafa can't make Trump have a better hairstyle.
Rafa can't scale Kilimanjaro barehanded.
Rafa can't give the world another 5 Fedals this year.

;)

Murray, Djokovic and Nadal are ambitious revolutionary young men who tried to dethrone the King, with Nadal is the best of them all, but they failed and the King is still there and looking down to them from his throne and say gently:

- You failed.
