Andy Murray's - Murray-Go-Round Thread

I think they have to do that to avoid inevitable criticism from more sensitive viewers who don't like hearing bad language on TV. Normally, in a recorded broadcast, any expletives would be automatically replaced by a bleep or just edited out. In a live broadcast, all the commentators can do is apologise to the viewers if any swear words can be heard.
More "sensitive" viewers aren't living in the real world. ;)

They've never lived in Scotland. These 'sensitive' viewers should try watching an episode or two of "The Thick of It" to find out how Scottish people swear when they really try. Hating Murray for swearing is practically racism.

Yep. Swear words are essentially punctuation in Scotland

To be serious for a moment: Murray seems like a pretty quiet, thoughtful guy. I just don't get why people hate this man... <scratching head>

As Billy Connolly noted, the only place on earth that comes close to Scotland for angry swearing is New York City.

How come Murray keeps on losing to Djokovic? He could beat him in his 2012-2013 season, but now he keeps losing.

Murray beat Djokovic every year from 2008 to 2013 except for 2010 when they didn't meet. He was a top ranked player and just a different beast back then. Post surgery Murray is out of the top 10 for the first time since 2007 and is still struggling to get back to that kind of level.

I think it's because at this moment he just ain't good enough.

In a nutshell.

In a nutshell.

Rafa is the only player in history to come back from lengthy injuries and pick up like he never missed a minute....ahem.

He'll be back in 2015. There are only 3 players that can live with Murray when he plays like he did against Djokovic at the US open

I think today was a Murray-Go-Round match...Murray turned from a destructive aggressive player into a sloth without a second serve.

I hope he doesn't make the WTF's, reason if he does he'll just have many more defeats given todays form.

The off season might be helpful to work on his cardiovascular attributes

I'll bump this...Valencia 500 final was one of the best finals I've seen....the match was on Robredo's racket but Murray kept fighting. I still don't understand the hate Tommy get's, he's awesome and he's getting better at 32 years of age.

He moves up to 6th in the world and 5th in the race to London.

Indeed, I too do not get this 'hate' thing in general.

I suspect the problem is not that some people hate a player I think the problem is that die-hard fans translate a 'not a fan', 'don't like that player' or 'I think he reached the summit already' etc into 'this person must hate'.

Best 'net scene' EVER in tennis history! Let's just call it GNSOAT.

My congrats to Murray. Good to see him as good as qualified for the WTF.

Bizarre performance from Andy! I think he really must have experienced a shoulder problem because it makes no sense to throw away a perfectly comfortable 2 set lead no matter how many MTOs Seppi was taking!

In which case I am now worried about his fitness. Does a sore shoulder just go away of its own accord? Won't be too surprised if he withdraws from the next round!

In my opinion: Andy is the artist on tour. He has a tennis genius about him that is uncanny but he also gets bored at times and requires a touch of crisis in order to produce his best version of tennis. There are times when he is simply the best and he can produce straight set wins (Olympic Finals, Wimbledon last year, ETC.) but he also thrives on taking the path least traveled and finding opportunities that are hidden to conventional schools of thought. The sooner you realize this about him the closer you are to appreciating his body of work.
Pretty good summary of Murray this IMO

The matches Murray has played in Doha have been really odd and lackadaisical.

My idea came from when I was sitting half cut after a night on the Cornish tiles and I thought...Kim Sears, Pot Noodle, Southern Comfort and Lemonade....

Forget that this thread is apt for Murray and it documents the Merry Go Round in which Murray has given his fans recently and in the past. He rarely ever does things straight forward, there's always something and I guess that adds to the entertainment/frustration. This ain't about "Got Destroyed LOL :)" this is more about the roller-coaster matches he puts on in which he makes no sense.

Murray wins 6-1, 1-6, 6-4 vs a dangerous Clay courter called Almagro who's been to 3 French Open quarter finals, in my opinion can beat Murray on clay.

Murray beats Lukas Rosol and Jiří Veselý at Indian Wells in a typical Murray Go Round match, he has the ability and the pedigree to dispatch lower ranked opponents just like Federer, Djokovic and Nadal to a lesser extent...this doesn't mean the match is on his racket.

Name other stupendous matches only he can produce? I'll document this as much as I can regardless of interest.

Murray loses against a journeyman, nearly beats the World number 3 in 5 sets then beats a player in great form who's in the top 30 in around 3 weeks.

Metallic Hip Murray is even more of up and down than he ever has been.

Many, many players get lucky in finals. Luck is part of the game. But luck is not enough . They still have to go out and win those matches. No opponent, tired or not, playing 100% or not, is going to lie down and hand it over on a plate. Murray was arguably tired after playing an extensive 2 day semi-final against Nadal at 2008 US Open and had to go out and face a well rested Federer in the final the next day. Did Federer get lucky on that occasion?

That's irrelevent. Djokovic still had the stamina and energy to face down Nadal in a 6 hour final, the longest Slam final in history and that after facing Murray in a semi-final that lasted just under 5 hours, longer than his Wimby semi against Del Potro.

So Murray got 'lucky' just because he managed to take care of Djokovic in straight sets whilst Federer had to struggle with Del Potro? Maybe Murray would have handled Del Potro a bit better than Federer did and Federer might have struggled against Djokovic or maybe not. Either way, the outcome might not have been an easy 3 setter if Federer had beaten Del Potro by the same score Murray beat Djokovic but the odds are still that Murray would have won that match. He was fired up for it and keen to avenge his loss in the Wimbledon final a few weeks earlier.

Nope, the 2012 AO semi-final between Murray and Djokovic was even longer. It lasted 4hrs and 50 mins and Djokovic still had enough energy to go out and tackle Nadal in a 6 hour final. So what was the problem at Wimbledon?

Murray had an EASY semi-final win against Janowicz? Did you watch the match? I did. It went to 4 sets, the first 3 of which were quite tight affairs. Janowicz may not have been ranked as high as Djokovic but he was still a seeded player and playing some of his best tennis at that time (although his form has slumped since then as has Murray's). Murray also had a long and difficult 5 set quarter-final against Verdasco (a former top 10 player) who can still be very dangerous on occasion and is actually a good grasscourt player. Apart from his semi with Del Potro, Djokovic arguably had a much easier time negotiating his way through the draw than did Murray.

But it's all ifs, buts and maybes isn't it? You can say that about most matches and argue if only this player or that player had or hadn't done so and so or some condition had not been altered etc. If only there hadn't been a rain delay at a certain point, if only they hadn't had to close the roof, if only Player A hadn't sprained his ankle trying to hit a return, if only Player B hadn't been suffering from a bad cold and so on and so on. None of them alters the fact that on the day in question, one player will win and the other will lose and there is nothing whatsover that would justify any sort of asterisk unless one of the players had pulled out altogether! That's life, that's tennis!

Because you were trying to imply that only Murray faces problems against lower-ranked players and that the BIG 3 are somehow immune to this sort of thing. That's why.

You may not be a Murray-hater but, like many on here, you still succumb to the tendency to judge him by different standards from the players you regard as the greatest. No-one is arguing that he's a level or 2 (maybe even 3) below the Big 3 at this moment in time but that does not alter his past record and achievements and you can't explain away his present level of performance as if they are somehow typical of something that has always been the case when it very clearly isn't. That is what I am trying to get across to you.
....
Those were the days when @Mainad would savage a Murray hater, now.......well... He just agrees with them ....
I'm joking Mainad ! I'm joking ;-)

You just pompously opined that we have to believe that he could be neither a tennis artist nor a genius because YOU haven't noticed it!

How about adopting a little humility and try prefacing your pronouncements with that little 3 word phrase: 'In my opinion....etc'. because everyone's entitled to that (but must be prepared to be challenged on it if given public utterance).
Wow feisty Mainad !
