Talk Tennis with Andy Roddick!

Welcome to The Show! On Wednesday, SportNation welcomed special guest Andy Roddick! The 22-year-old tennis phenom already has won 19 singles titles!
Last year, Andy became the youngest American to finish No. 1 in the history of the ATP Rankings (since 1973). Roddick made the biggest jump to the No. 1 spot from the previous year, improving from No. 10. With that jump, he became the sixth American to finish No. 1 and first since Andre Agassi in 1999.

The ShowGirl: Hey everybody -- it's Friday! We have a very special guest today, Andy Roddick will be joining us at about 12:30 ET. Send in your questions now, and stay tuned for Andy, right here in The Show!

Andy Roddick: Hello.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Martin (Indianapolis): Why did you change from a visor to a hat?

Andy Roddick: Because my coach told me I looked too much like Freddy Couples.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Becky (NYC): Should there be instant replay in tennis?

Andy Roddick: Yes, I think maybe a rule similar to football where you get so many challenges per match -- but there's a consequence if you're wrong.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Renee (Malaysia): Hi Andy, You were playing in Thailand recently. How do you like Asia?! I know you like cuisine - how do you like Asian food? Hope you had a good time here. Cheers~

Andy Roddick: It was a lot of fun playing inThailand. We're looking forward to playing the Masters Cup in Shanghai next year. .... Paradorn rules!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
JC (WEST VIRGINIA): Andy, would you dismantle Kournikova if you two played?

Andy Roddick: Hide the women and children!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Becky (NYC): What will be your #1 tennis goal in 2005, being number #1, winning Davis Cup (again we hope!) or beating Roger?

Andy Roddick: I'm focused on #1 and Davis Cup ... to acomplish that, I'll have to beat Roger.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sam (Pittsburgh): Do you think you're in the prime of your career, or are the best years still to come?

Andy Roddick: It's fun being a has-been at 22. Just kidding. The best is definitely yet to come.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Aaron (Minneapolis): I know you are playing Mardy Fish in Minneapolis coming up this year. Have you been to Mineapolis before? You should come hang out with my friends and I.

Andy Roddick: Mardy knows Minnesota better than I do ... give him a call.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ansley (Newport Beach, CA): I am a student athlete at UC Irvine and we were stoked to hear you were on our campus, thanks for coming. I play waterpolo and on game days I get really nervous but a big adrenaline rush when I see the crowds. What are some of your game day rituals to calm your nerves if you get any?

Andy Roddick: I worry when I'm not nervous, when I'm worried about a match, it seems to get me more focused.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Joe (NJ): Andy, are you concerned about your sport? Golf is getting better ratings, GOLF Andy?!?

Andy Roddick: Worldwide, there is no comparison between golf and tennis ratings.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
John (NYC): You think you can take McEnroe? He's a tough cookie

Andy Roddick: Are you talking about Patrick or John? :)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Michael (New York): What are your thoughts about making wooden rackets mandatory for the men's game, to bring back some of the finesse lost by modern rackets?

Andy Roddick: Guys with big serves would serve large with garden tools.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TPro Cali (LA LA): Thank you! Golf is not a sport!

Andy Roddick: But it's a tough game, and a great hobby.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dennis (NYC): Andy, would you pull a Pedro and call Federer your daddy?

Andy Roddick: My dad's too bald to have a ponytail.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
John (NYC): andy is table tennis a sport then? I think i could beat you in that

Andy Roddick: Send your name and address, I'll take that bet.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lee (State College): I have grown up my whole life watching Agassi. Since you're only two years older than me, did you follow him when you were growing up? What's it like playing against players you used to watch on TV?

Andy Roddick: It's extremely surreal becoming buddies with someone your grew up idolizing, but andre is a great person and it has been a blast

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
mike (seattle): andy you suck and you will never win a major again so what do you have to say about that?

Andy Roddick: neither will you

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Chris (Buffalo): I've notice that you stand freaksihly far behind the baseline returning serves. Did you end up there out of comfort or is that something you and coach gilbert discussed? do you find it hard against bigger hitters to then reclaim some of that space?

Andy Roddick: i try tomix it up depending onthe opponent. it is definitely something that brad has worked on with me

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Darth Federer (Trophy Room): Andrew I am your father......

Andy Roddick: can i have my allowance?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Renee (Malaysia): What's your IQ score? You just seems witty all the time...

Andy Roddick: i have great writers haha

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
DS (Boston): hey andy did you laugh like a hyena when ivan ljubicic got stung by that bee at RCA? that guy's a jerk, why do you think he hates you? ever since he trashed you at us open 2003 I've always been quite happy to see you beat him like a rug in tournaments. haha!

Andy Roddick: i paid that bee 20 bucks before the match started .... :)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TPro Cali (LA LA): How much can you bench press? In my prime I could push 470 on incline Hammer Strength Machine...now my serve and forehand are enormous!!!

Andy Roddick: i maxed out at 67 pounds last week

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Marcus (San Diego): I am looking forward to a rivalry between you and Federer bringing back memories of Agassi-Sampras. So can you please start beating him every once in a while?

Andy Roddick: sure...... anything else? haha i amworking on it.i definitely wanna try to get my number 1 ranking back next year

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Mike (Dana Point): are you embarrassed at how small your left arm is compared to your right? I play alot of tennis and it sux...

Andy Roddick: it does suck....... my options are limited though

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Papa Roddick (Lincoln): What is up with our Huskers.........you need to start playing QB and enroll at the school and you will get your allowance.

Andy Roddick: i am ready..... put me in dad

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TPro Cali (LA LA): What tennis stars have you dated? What would be the outcome if you and Serena had kids?

Andy Roddick: first round draft picks

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Kiweda (Freeport): I think Roger should start pissing you off so that you beat him to a pulp, at tennis that is, seems you do well when players **** you off like Ivan lol

Andy Roddick: true.... maybe you could help him with that

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sean (Austin): man your kids would have some junk in the trunk!

Andy Roddick: thanks for noticing

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Bill (Boston): You like guys Andy? Because you seem awfully gay.

Andy Roddick: no need to take out the red sox loss on me bill :)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
DS (Boston): Roger Federer is boring! thank god tennis has someone as witty and interesting to watch as you. if roger's going to dominate for the next ten years, he'll kill tennis!

Andy Roddick: alright everyone......gotta get going.... had fun .... take care

The ShowGirl: That's a question for college football expert Ivan Maisel! Here he is now!

wow i dont know why people dont like him. i think hes the funniest interviewer for a tennis player in a long time and he doesnt take himself too seriously obviously. and hes not arrogant and conceited at all as some people accuse him of

andy tries to be so cool when he's realy just a ***** n a half. i think someone needs to set him strait, i think safin should deck his ass and cuzz him out in russian then **** on his face

i think u have to give props to roddick most pros wouldnt even bother to answer some of those questions such as -

mike (seattle): andy you suck and you will never win a major again so what do you have to say about that?

or the who's ur daddy questions :D

He really thinks he can get his #1 ranking back next year. What a d$%^head. As if Roger who is 8-1 against him is going to let him be #1 again, what a delusional kid. I cant wait to see him get his crow shoved down his throat next year, and believe me I will be here to gloat. He should worry about staying #2. That is a more realistic goal for him and wont be easy to attain.

This was really good:

mike (seattle): andy you suck and you will never win a major again so what do you have to say about that?

Andy Roddick: neither will you

That was a funny read, thanks for posting it.

yes, I can see why so many people here hate Andy Roddick. He's smart, funny, and good-natured. What a jerk.

I was just about to post that part. It's hilarious.

No doubt Roddick is one of the funniest and most interesting interviews in all of sports. One witty line after another, I was seriously laughing my ass off. That's the real Andy in that interview, I don't know why some people can't see that. Focused but light hearted, insightful but self-depriciating. Really good stuff.

Yes, he is all that except insightful. I haven't read once from his post match interview of good analysis of the match or his opponents.

That's the first time I read this chat, and there's no doubt Andy was actually responding.

He's very computer literate, but he rarely uses capital letters. And this is trademark Andy, as was noted above:

mike (seattle): andy you suck and you will never win a major again so what do you have to say about that?

Andy Roddick: neither will you.

mike, give us a call when you say, reach the ATP Top 1000??

As for SydW, I'm not sure you want to challenge me to give you some examples of when Andy has been insightful regarding his opponents.

If you do, just post a note here, I can give you many examples. It's up to you.

Otherwise, I won't bore the rest of the folks here with that they already know and have no wish to hear again.

a heads up, I think Roddick will be on the Sportscenter hotseat (hotchair? I get my ESPN material mixed up all the time...) tonight. Anyone want to take stabs at what questions he'll be asked today?

-Chanchai

Well... I didn't get to see it. don't know what night it ended up happening (if at all). The original heads up my way came from Wertheim's mailbag.

However, I'm sure some of the Roddick fansites captured and encoded it for download :)

By all means, perharps I just always read things from him making jokes about everything (and if you haven't noticed, I do think he is very funny) much more than talking seriously about the game/match/opponents, or perharps you and I just have very different interpretation on insightful.

Do the Andy fans have to be so paranoid about anything said on Andy all the time? It's just an opinion, don't have to use the word challenge
